GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Dulius Folium aka Sweet Leaf
  • Origins: Common appearance on agricultural worlds
  • Other Locations: Many temperate planets, not found on arid or cold worlds.
  • Classification: Vegetable/Weed
  • Average Growth Cycle: Begins life as a small seed pod attached to wispy cotton like stalk that catches the wind to allow it to move away from parent plant. Each pod can contain up to 6-10 seeds depending on health of parental plant. Pod breaks after the cotton stalk snaps off about a day after it is clear of the parent. Seeds disperse around the pod via wind or being moved by animals who might eat the pod itself though it lacks flavor for an sentient creature consumption. Once seeds are in soil they grow quickly sprouting a small tangle of roots in a week. Another week after that the first appearance of the leaf will appear. If allowed to the seed leads to a single long narrow leaf which reaches full height and maturity after 4-6 weeks depending on nutrients. When old enough and ready the leaf itself curls in becoming the pod and growing the next set of leaf pods. Roots stay behind to regrow the parent leaf to begin the process again meaning the plant's roots must be removed in their entirety in order to prevent regrowing.
  • Viability: Being considered a weed and annoyance to most crop farmers the leaf requires very little in terms of soil, only needing to be covered to begin the growing process and its growing rate changes based on nutrients it can pull up and has very efficient photosynthesis. Its peskiness lies in its ability to rapidly out seed the local plants and that to properly stop its spreading one must remove the roots. Once picked the plant has a very limited shelf life as drying out causes it to lose its flavor which is the only thing it has of real value.
  • Description: A broad leaf that grows narrow to a point growing very low to the ground with an almost none existence stalk.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Average Height: 15 cm
  • Average Length: 5cm
  • Color: Muted Green
  • Nutritional Value: The roots have some minor nutrients and the leaf itself has a low sugar quality but otherwise nothing.
  • Toxicity: Non Toxic
  • Other Effects: A fully mature leaf (which is starting to curl in to become a seed pod) has enough sugars in it to act as a mild stimulation, less then a small cup of coffee.
  • Distinctions: Might sometimes be confused with the leaf of another plant if they grow too close. Very specifiable to herbicides as it takes in nutrients quickly.
Strengths:
  • The leaf has a very sweet flavor and can be eaten raw, or brewed into a tea so long as used soon after picking.
  • Very easy to grow and harvest for those interested in it
Weaknesses:
  • Roots have most nutrients but have a very bitter taste and sprout like quality.
  • A nuisance plant that can quickly overwhelm gardens if not properly taken care of.
  • Can stain the teeth a light green if over consumed

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

This plant can be found on most farms and farming worlds do to its strong seed pods and ability to get swept up with other plants. Often farmers take the plant to new worlds without even realizing it until they see the tell tale leaves sprouting up from among their crops. Usually most major farms simply use herbicide which easily obliterates the pest but other smaller farms must pick out the pesky leaves and roots by hand. Often in farming families this is seen as a game by the children who can eat the leaves as a treat or bring them to their parents to make a nice sweet drink from the leaves. Other times being forced to eat the roots of the plant, which need to be destroyed to prevent it from regrowing, is seen as a punishment among those same families. While not done on a large scale there are some who grow devoted gardens of sweet leaf in order to have a supply of somewhat healthy sweets
