Surge Factor #3 | Swarm Domain of the Blood-Kae Kethenite Surge.

The Surge fleets were slowly establishing their domains. Slowly. Trial and error. Failure and future. A few brave souls had begun to resist. The first scientists were aware of what was going on, rumors had reached listening posts of disturbances in deep space, ships going missing, strange infected fleets having psychotic episodes. Even space whale swarms becoming more numerous, though that was surely just a spacer-myth told around bars.

Barab I tonight was the source of one such disturbance. Tonight the defenders had rallied to meet the hive head on. Alone with no support from the wider galactic community they may not last all that long. The mining settlement was disrupting the Hive with their underground drilling. Distress Calls were being sent out The hive would only have hours till morning came, they would have to breach the dome settlement and overwhelm the defenders underground before the radiation or dangerous weather washed them away.

Surge Factor #3 - The Night the Ground Rumbled
The Swarm Mother walked out of the Hive Entrance, her Talons and Exoskeleton hardened, growing ever sharper, her armored tail curling behind her and slamming down on a rock.

Silence. She looked out toward the mining settlement, some kilometre away. They were readying themselves, not dug in but they had seen the reports from the tunnels of what was coming, heard their dying miners cry the warning.

Their deaths had left only Silence.

Until the roar came.

A new Canvas, for a New Age

The Surge. Thousands, upon thousands of drones beginning to move underground from their sizeable hive, with much larger rumblings behind them. The swarm mother extended her talons upward, unfolding like a butterfly, and unleashing the Surge Impulse upon the unsuspecting landscape, compelled and driven by need for expansion and hunger for new domain.

Tides of water were beginning to form in clouds above. The creatures knew their limited window. As all who hunted on this planet did. The Surge came and called to all organisms below. Bursting like the dam they were held behind. Pressure to move and to consume ahead. DNA, Biomatter, new resources, and territories. Feeding.

Dead metal was lining up ahead of the hive, larger guns, ferocious Barabel and their employers trying to defend a domed colony of almost fifty thousand men and women. Much of which was below the ground, which would not help them here. Their distress calls going unheard so far, the hive surged closer over the hostile environment. Closing. Their window before the waters rained down on everyone in great tides was not a large one. Speed was of the essence, the surge impulse felt that. Compelled to rush headlong into the dark landscape.

Amber canvas in a row of expanding spheres, hundreds cut down by artillery shells. The rough dark ground beginning to light up in flashes. A show of definite fire and flame burning across an already hostile world. There was a chance that the defenders would hold. They had ferocity and technology on their side. What they didn't have was time. The bodies moving within the swarm were bigger, not the biggest they’d ever be, but bigger. More mass, spitting magma back at the defenders, fire began burning in the defender's trenches, tanks showing the first signs of melting heat impacts. Great worms moving below the ground, and drones skittering atop it moving to meet them for a charge. Tanks, and artillery. Many drones died facing the metal wall ahead in the first waves of fire. Private security forces, and whatever Barabel they had to spare, howling savage defiance.

A good reason for defiance. 50,000 lives, families, workers, locals, you name it. 50,000 new sentient DNA for the Hive. It would be doubtful any of them would walk away, at least not the same if unaided. At the rear beginning his charge, was the four-armed surge lord, four swords and a heavy layer of Terminus Barab Armor covering him. Bounding through drones and pushing them out of the way.

Location: In the Trenches ahead of the colony.
Objective: Bug Hunt | Smoke em if you’ve got em.

Bugs. Always more frelling bugs. Lighting a cigar from the now burning metal husk of a tank, magma balls having put a stop to that one. Atleast the pay was good for these corporate types. Simple man, give him credits and he'd give you dead bugs. He took a puff on the end, watching the fireworks. Not shooting a gun, even as the uglies got real close. No point, there would always be more bugs.

"Hey Kid."

"Yeah."

He flicked his cigar and pressed a button in his other hand.

"Duck."

Kas covered his ears and shielded his helmeted face with his red-armored arm. A beautiful line of explosive after explosive went up ahead of him in a wave shaking the ground. Drone bodies flying into the air, along with a wave of earth and dust which carried on ahead of them. Beautiful. He took a puff on the cigar smugly and crossed his arms. Can't beat miners for their industrial explosives. Short-lived smugness, he staggered around in the trench. His feet off balance, turning toward the colony with concern, a huge surge worm had gone underneath the ground going straight for the dome. "Kid you're with me!" Kid, he wasn't much older himself. He grabbed their arm and yanked them out of the trench, heading after the minor earthquake going on below the pair.

While artillery shot in the other direction, and men wondered where they were headed. The kid tried firing into the ground but that was about as effective as trying to pull weeds when a tree was moving beneath you, which is exactly what this felt like, a hell of a tree. "Save the ammo." They were both going to need it. The worm was really close to that main dome, they might keep the crawlers out but if the burrowers got in, it was going to be a matter of time.

Blinding light ahead of the Swarm Mother. Explosives ripped drones to pieces. Hundreds died immediately, perhaps a thousand of the Hive sung their last, only silence in their place. Where once she saw images or had sensory contact, now there was silence. The sonic wave that screamed from the Swarm Mother was piercing, feeling every death as her own. Not all the Hive were connected in the same way, her nature was to bond, and to become the senses of those around her.

Her talons ripped up the ground over her own dead, their bodies spilling lifeblood upon the ground, and seeding new life that would flow below them. A battle to reclaim it would commence over the weeks to follow. Just like reclaiming this dead metal structure, an unliving thing that should not be allowed to exist. The Surge worm that had gone below the enemy lines ripped out of the earth, the HUGE beast crashing through the side and rocking the metal structure. The screams from miners inside were terrifying to those around them, the sheer bulk of this one going half way into it, before it fell unconcious and slowly rolled still.

Visiting the same pain that they had inflicted on the Hive tunnels, she surged forward within the drone mass. Her talons pierced one injured man straight through the chest, throwing him into a friend. Blaster scarred her exoskeleton armor, she leaped into the shooters trench, tail crushing one man’s windpipe, talons ripping into another, he exhaled then sagged. Vengeance for the dead and dying. She felt. The swarm hungered. But she felt. Every creature ahead would pay for the dead lying around her. She felt scorching hits on her back and turned, eyes the orange of the hive… not needing to move, the bulk of the drone's surged over the forward trenches, a thousand jaws feasting on those that were too slow to run.

On they went toward the now pierced structure, tanks shelling the thriving drone mass to the bitter end. Clouds forming above, moisture soon to fall and wash away the dead. As they washed away the metal.
