Approved Tech Svolten Rhyolite Whetstone

Status
Not open for further replies.
Intent: A whetstone for applying temporary, specific, minor alchemy (edge durability) to any given blade.
Development Thread: None
Manufacturer: Velok the Younger and associates
Model: N/A
Affiliation: Velok the Younger and associates
Modularity: None
Production: Semi-unique
Material: Svolten rhyolite

Strengths:
  • The whetstone will make virtually any solid blade extremely sharp, though not supernaturally so.
  • The whetstone will make virtually any solid blade far less prone to chipping, blunting, or breaking for a period of roughly half an hour.
  • The whetstone can be used to hone or repair damage (chips, dulling, lightsabre notches) to the edges of alchemical weapons.
  • As with any piece of Svolten rhyolite, the whetstone can be used in the crafting of a Sith sword's ever-sharp edge; however, this process would exhaust and destroy the whetstone.
Weaknesses:
  • The whetstone is somewhat brittle. Hasty or careless use may break or even crumble the whetstone.
  • The edge-durability effect only lasts half an hour after a full and careful sharpening process. Use hastily, and the effect may last a much shorter time.

Description:
"A Sith sword is enhanced by submerging it in a trough of blood spilled in anger.
Grinding its edge with Svolten rhyolite will ensure it never dulls."
- Sorzus Syn

Rhyolite is a mineral found on the ancient Sith world of Svolten. For many thousands of years, rhyolite has been used as part of the intricate alchemical forging rites that create Sith swords.

With effort and research, Velok the Younger created rhyolite whetstones. The whetstones can be used as ritual components for Sith sword forging, as with any piece of rhyolite. However, due to Velok's work, the whetstones can also be used to give virtually any solid blade a temporarily ultra-durable edge. A blade's edge sharpened with one of Velok's whetstones will not chip, dull, or break for roughly half an hour, even in sustained combat. Obviously this doesn't make the blade indestructible; the effect has nothing to do with, for example, blaster bolts, lightsabres, vice grips, high-end vibroblades, or anything else that would normally wreck the blade. The effect is confined to enhancing the durability of the blade's edge in normal combat circumstances, so as to prevent dulling and chipping.

The whetstone can be used to hone alchemical weapons. For example, low- to mid-grade Sith swords and similar weapons often dull or notch when used to block a lightsabre. One of Velok's whetstones could be used to correct the damage to the edge.

Primary Source: Svolten rhyolite is an obscure canon material mentioned in the Book of Sith: the Sorzus Syn quote. The reference is noted in the Sith Sword article on Wookieepedia. This submission is an attempt to flesh out Svolten rhyolite and make a minor extrapolation from it.
