ADVANCED SYSTEMS

Strengths:
  • Advanced Sensor Suite, optimized for long-range multi-spectral analysis.
  • Highly Maneuverable, combing small size and variable vector-thrust to create a fast-moving target difficult to target.
  • Hardened Against Slicing due to proprietary Corellia Digital C4I systems.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism leaves nothing to chance.
Weaknesses:
  • Vulnerable to Ion Energy.
  • No Deflector Shields. This droid relies on maneuverability and ion shielding alone.
  • No Hyperdrive. This droid is a interstellar hitchhiker.
  • Extremely Light Weapons.
  • No Locomotion means this droid is dependent on repulsorlift for movement.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism means the chance of reusing one of these isn't great.
DESCRIPTION

The stingray is the engineer's nickname for what is officially described as the Variable Geometry Self-Propelled ISR Probe Droid. A specialized droid starfighter, the stingray is a deep-space scout designed to carry out survey operations that include conducting optical, multi-spectral, and cyber intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR/C-ISR) mission profiles. Introduced into a star system or interstellar medium by means of a carrier spacecraft or cargo ship, the stingray is capable of fully autonomous operation without need for a slave control circuit. Performing like a mobile sensor suite, the droid is capable of space and atmospheric flight, enabling it to conduct survey operations across the whole spectrum of solar system environments.

The applications of this technology include (but are not limited to):
  • supporting search-and-rescue operations inside densely packed asteroid fields or debris disks, such as that orbiting Tash-Taral;
  • cyber intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance in combination with military operational preparation of the environment (C-ISR/OPE) operations against space- or terrestrial-based assets, such as targeting the military C2 communications paths for an orbital defense satellite network of a hostile world;
  • Planetary topography mapping;
  • Spectral analysis of EM-bandwidth use by a planetary civilization (analysis of relative technology level of an unknown society);
  • tracking signal propagation and identifying transmission nodes to identify military C2 nodes, such as "sniffing" for hidden Rebel or Imperial bases, and;
  • long-range reconnaissance of unknown stellar phenomenon or planetary bodies.
Simply put, the stingray is a specialized droid starfighter that eschews both deflector shields and weapons for sensors. Lots and lots of sensors. It's a one trick pony and that trick is gathering data, which it then transmits using Corellia Digital's proprietary CD-X encryption protocols. This is due to the fact that the starfighter is designed to operate in deep space environments where HoloNet or other communication pathways may not exist, thereby negating the usefulness of ghostwave or other "piggyback" encryption methods.

For the same reasons, the drawbacks to these droids are numerous. For one, they take up hangar space, which on military spacecraft can be precious. Second, they're specialized in non-combat support operations, meaning they're useless in a fight. If the stingray encounters trouble, it will attempt to flee rather than fight back. Should that prove impossible, the droid will use a blaster cannon on it's tail (hence the stingray moniker) to defend itself, though its fallback should "fight or flight" prove ineffective is to self-destruct.

The self-destruct mechanism and its control circuit are shielded in an agrinium faraday cage. Should the droid control systems be rendered inert, such as by a directed ion discharge, the self-destruct circuit will detonate. Extremely powerful ion strikes, such as from Sith Lightning or Electric Judgment may overcome this layer of insulation. Force Users adept at Mecha-Duru may also be able to remotely disable the self-destruct mechanism; however, traditional slicers will still have to contend with the anti-slicing safeguards governing the stingray's operating system.
