Private Static and Stars

Aren watched the indicator lights flicker to life before the familiar hum of the communications system filled the cockpit. Satisfied, she gathered her screwdriver and slipped it back into her tool bag.

"No debt," she said with a small shake of her head. "You sent out a call for help. I answered it."

She stood, brushing a bit of dust from her jeans.

"If you ever run into another cybernetics or electronics problem, let me know. Otherwise..." A faint smile crossed her face. "...I'd rather not see your ship crash again."

Aren gave a small shrug as she latched her tool bag closed.

"Happens."

She glanced over the patched hull of his fighter.

"You walked away from the crash, and the ship's flying again. I'd call that a better outcome than most."

A faint smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.

"Just try not to make a habit of testing your emergency landing skills."

Aren gave him a small nod.

"That's wonderful to know."

The corner of her mouth twitched faintly as she slung her tool bag back over her shoulder.

"Since I'm already here, do you need me to run a diagnostic on anything else? Better to find another problem now than halfway through your next flight."

Aren nodded and climbed onto the wing, opening the access panel beside the communications array once more. She connected her datapad and let it scan the ship's electronic systems while she watched the results scroll by.

"There are a couple of things."

She reached into the compartment and reseated a loose data cable before tightening its retaining clip.

"This connector wasn't far behind the last one. It probably loosened during the crash."

Her eyes returned to the datapad.

"And your astromech interface is throwing intermittent handshake errors. Nothing serious, but the contacts are dirty." She pulled a cleaning pen from her tool bag and carefully cleaned the connector before plugging it back in. The warning disappeared from her screen.

"There."

She closed the panel with a satisfied nod.

"Nothing that was going to leave you stranded, but enough to become annoying later. Those are the kinds of problems I like finding."

Aren smiled faintly as she closed her tool bag.

"My parents would agree with that."

She shrugged one shoulder.

"I've always liked figuring out why something stopped working. Once you know why, fixing it is usually the easy part."

Her eyes drifted over the fighter one last time before returning to Nolan.

"Besides, I'd rather spend an afternoon chasing down a faulty circuit than sitting behind a desk."

Aren gave a small nod as she slung her tool bag back over her shoulder.

"Glad we could get you back on the air."

She glanced toward her own ship before looking back at Nolan.

"I should get going. I've got a few projects waiting for me that probably won't fix themselves."

A faint smile touched her face.

"Good luck, Nolan. And if you're ever around Mandalore's government offices, I'm there often enough. We may run into each other again."

With that, she offered a small wave before turning toward her ship. A few minutes later the engines came to life, and the freighter lifted from the rocky ground, disappearing into the sky and leaving Nolan with a fully functioning communications system and one less thing to worry about before his next flight.
