SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT 87
DETECTIVE-SERGEANT

  • Model:
SI (“Special Investigations”) Series Tactical Droid, BECP-8832-101, SIU (101) 87

    Gender Programming:
    Male

    Height:
    1.93 Meters

    Weight:
    80 Kilograms

    Colour:
The body of SIU-87 is primarily made up of two colours: dark blue and blaster-metal grey. It has a department identification badge painted onto its left breast, a mix of red and gold. The pattern of its colouration is merely a series of solid colours across sections of the body, not adopting any fancy or ornate design practices.

    Photoreceptors:
SIO-87’s photoreceptors are a sort of dim yellow or tan, depending on the light.

    Scars or Distinctive Features:
    None.

    Build:
Tall, with slim arms and legs but a boxy upper torso. It's head is hexagonal, with a visor covering its photoreceptors and the sides of its “face”.

  • Alignment:

    Lawful Neutral
SIU-87 has been programmed for the sole purpose of law enforcement and the investigation of crime, no matter how seemingly minor or insignificant. While SIU-87 does understand some level of nuisance, it is rare for the droid to consider such things in the middle of an investigation or stressful situation.
    Perspectives on Other Alignments:

    Lawful Good
SIU-87 is decidedly neutral on Lawful Good aligned individuals. As adherents of the law and moral exemplars, SIU-87 should scarcely have a reason to deal with them as anything but an ally in the enforcement of the law, barring its extreme and merciless tendencies.

    Neutral Good
SIU-87 regards those of the Neutral Good alignment in much the same vein as the Lawful Good proponents, albeit with a hair more suspicion. While the latter appears to follow the law and act only in the best interest of others, the Neutral Good will bend laws or rules if they believe such actions to be for the greater good. Such actions are anathema to SIU-87’s programming.

    Chaotic Good
The bane of SIU-87’s existence, despite their often well-meaning and morally justified intentions. It is one thing to bend rules for the betterment of society, but to break them for some greater good as proponents of Chaotic Good call for is something SIU-87 cannot abide by.

    True Neutral
Those of the True Neutral alignment are viewed by SIU-87 in much the same fashion they view everything: total neutrality. As an alignment that is not predisposed towards law-breaking or assisting law enforcement, SIU-87 rarely has cause to interact with them.

    Chaotic Neutral
SIU-87 views the Chaotic Neutral person in the same vein as the Chaotic Good, though at least there are no moral scruples in bringing them in.

    Lawful Evil
Abusing the law to one’s own ends is something that SIU-87 is conflicted on. While breaking the laws outright is something the droid would never consider, bending them to solve a case is never out of the question. As such, despite SIU-87 close adherence to law enforcement, it often finds itself in agreement with the more morally upright Lawful Evil proponents.

    Neutral Evil
Often an alignment filled by common criminals and the sorts SIU-87 usually arrests, the droid is quick to target and investigate Neutral Evil leaning individuals. While it will not act until there is proof of wrongdoing, SIU-87 always has an eye on these people.

    Chaotic Evil
Terrorists, butchers, monsters. SIU-87 knows its duty and knows it well; it is lunatics like these that SIU-87 is willing to bend or maneuver around some rules to take down. Someone with no respect or regard for the law does not deserve to be protected by it, and that goes double for the Chaotic Evil.

    General Personality:
SIU-87 is a proponent of the rule of law and its enforcement, regardless of social standing or wealth. To break the law is anathema to it and views all who do so as pariahs, though in most cases still protected to some level by the very law they scorn. While there are some exceptions where SIU-87 will bend laws or go against tradition, it is rare to see the droid doing anything other than enforcing the letter of the law. While understanding nuisance and circumstance, the droid never allows emotional stories or personal justifications to get in the way of its law enforcement. None are above the law, after all.

Foundation of the Balmorra Engineering Corps

The Balmorra Engineering Corps have their foundation in an off-shoot of the Hydian Way Production corporation 130 years prior to the activation of SIU-87 and its production batch. They were founded as an attempt to tap into resurgent interest in droids - primarily those of the often legendary Confederacy of Independent Systems. Due to the presence and ease of access to the resources needed in droid production, Balmorra was chosen as the base for this newly founded company.
The company’s early history was rife with controversy, from the labor strikes caused by their less-than-hospitable working conditions to the repeated inability to meet their production quotas. They also earned a reputation for stealing and slightly modifying copyrighted licenses and products, something they earned from their parent company the HWP. Paired with their lack of unique models were their generally low-quality products, placing them low in the popularity of the Droid Renaissance that began its trend at that time.
Recognizing the necessity of finding a unique product lest they fail in the market, the BEC formulated numerous think tanks to design something that would make the company some profit. With the executives at HWP growing wary of the BEC, they were forced to come up with something quick. Some models came and went, but the BEC would eventually strike platinum by looking to the past.

History of the Special Investigation Series

The Special Investigation Series, or Special Investigation Droids, were built off the T-Series Tactical Droid. The T-Series was made famous for its ability to learn from successive battles and adapt enemy tactics and strategies to future conflicts. While the droids were infamous for being extremely over-confident and egotistical, the think tanks over at the BEC saw potential in their highly logical and thorough learning abilities, especially in civilian applications. Some ideas were thrown around, from having them act as ship captains to statisticians and accountants, but one idea found more success than any other: investigative.
While droids had been present in law enforcement for as long as they existed in galactic history, they most often acted in the position of enforcement or security, and sometimes administrative. It was generally accepted that droids - the majority of models, that is - lacked the ability to examine and understand the minutia of investigation or crime fighting. The BEC jury-rigged the learning and logic motors for investigation over tactical analysis.
The SI series was a success and the first major one in the company’s history. In precincts where the droids are deployed, law enforcement notes a 20% increase in successful investigations - though the definition for “success” in these instances varies on case-by-case basis. With the information received, the BEC were quick to tinker and release successive models to law enforcement across the galaxy.

End of the Balmorra Engineering Corps

Despite its successes, the BEC was eventually slated for liquidation following a merger with one of the HWPs more successful rivals. The company was given a tight time frame to sell off its remaining product before the merger could go through to maximize profits for the soon-to-be-defunct subsidiary. Though the BEC pushed to maintain its existence and continue the production of its more successful products, its executives could see the writing on the wall and ceased production wholesale. They sold off their remaining product, eventually for as cheap as they could.
Due to the generally manic nature of those last few months, it is not fully recorded where the majority of BEC products went. It is noted by those historians interested in the company’s history that their military hardware more-of-then-not ended up in the hands of dissidents and warlords, those willing to buy even low-quality weapons of war at a serious markdown. Civilian models were harder to get rid of, especially the number of highly specialized droids the company had begun touting. Perhaps the most difficult was their most successful model: The SIUs. The haste at which they wanted to sell ironically harmed sales as precincts and security forces became wary of the discounts. It is perhaps fortunate that the Axxila SI Department Initiative was passed into law during this time, leading to a massive demand for such droids.

Final Production Models & Axxila SI Department Initiative

Before the Empire, Axxila enjoyed being the master of its own sector of influence. Being the single most populated planet in the region, and an ecumenopolis no less, granted it a degree of power projection rare in the Outer Rim. This level of power and prosperity invited immigrants across the galaxy, and with them came crime. For centuries, Axxila boasted the same law enforcement practices it had since its founding, even as the population boomed. The great undercities relied on bureaucratic mazes to solve their problems, often inviting extrajudicial and vigilante justice over law enforcement.
The Directory - the ruling body on law enforcement at the time - decided to finally bring this issue to an end. A series of reforms were passed to the planetary congress, one of which was the SI Department Initiative. Prior to the Initiative, investigations pertaining to anything from murder to corporate espionage were handled by individual districts, often without defined precincts or areas of operation. To mitigate this, a standardized series of Departments were created, with clearly defined zones of operation. These new departments creatively named the Special Investigation Departments, were tasked with the duty of handling all extensive investigations within their precincts and expected to communicate with their sister departments as necessary.
However, an issue soon arose as the precincts lacked the manpower to staff these new departments. Be it low manpower or just a lack of specially trained staff, these departments were woefully ill-prepared to answer the rising crimes and cases across the planet. Desperate to alleviate this issue, the Directory eventually discovered the BEC and their discounted detective droids. Internal memos showcase that the Directory did not expect the SIUs to be necessary for long and merely intended them to be a stopgap until organic officers could be trained to replace them. Hundreds of SIUs were sold to Axxila, most of which were either surplus or lost batch versions that the BEC was quick to dump on Axxila. However, one final batch of two hundred had been completed prior to the announcement of the BECs liquidation; which was sold at the same discounted price as their predecessors.

    Activation of SIU-87

SIU-87 was attached to the Axxilan Thirty-Eighth Precinct Security Department as its first and, at that time, only Detective-Sergeant. As the first and only member of the Office of Special Investigations for the Thirty-Eighth, the department’s future was shaped by its machinations. Showcasing a great deal of independence unexpected for droids - but common among the SIUs - SIU-87 rapidly pursued cold cases and minor infractions alike. The success of the droids ballooned the funding of their shared department, seeing them grow into a vital aspect of the Axxilan Security Departments across the planet.
In the decades since, SIU-87 had remained the Detective-Sergeant of the Thirty-Eighth, outliving dozens of governments and directorates with very little change to its organization. Though it is still only a detective-sergeant, SIU-87 is the department’s go-to for many cases, no matter how important. It is one of the last of its kind still serving on Axxila, attrition wiping out its kin. While SIU-87s end is more-or-less inevitable in the ever-shifting tides of galactic history, it is far from done fighting the spread of crime on its home planet for these many decades.

    Modern Cases:

    Abilities:
    SAN (Specialty Access Network):

SIU-87 has immediate access to the entire Axxilan Security Network, from crime databases to active communication chatter should it have the appropriate access codes. The database updates every minute, meaning SIU-87 has access to the most recent reports as of the minute a scramble is activated. With every case, SIU-87 becomes smarter and understands more about crime and investigation.

    Antivirus Programs:
SIU-87 has been modified by the Axxilan Security Department to have top-level antivirus and firewall protections. In the event the droid’s defenses are breached, these programs are dedicated to destroying sensitive law enforcement records while protecting the droid’s operative system for later repair and redeployment.
