OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

 • Intent: Okay, let me soapbox for a minute. Due to decades of inconsistent canon and years of power creep, obscene numbers of weapons are de rigueur. Fortunately, under the new system, gun numbers are optional and all that matters is the ship’s overall rating. Therefore, using a strong canon precedent, I’m making a gun that I can use to give any ship a sensible-sounding number of barrels.

 • Primary Source: This submission is based on the turbolaser systems of the Star Destroyer Executor. The ship was able to direct its reactor’s full power to a disproportionately small gun count relative to smaller Star Destroyers, producing greater power per barrel. “The Executor-class had over 5,000 weapons emplacements,[2] including turbolasers, assault concussion missile launchers, and ion cannons.[4]. With warships able to direct all power to their energy weapons,[30] the Executor-class had at least 100 times more firepower than an Imperial-class destroyer.[2].”

 • Classification: Turbolaser cannon

 • Size: Stationary or ship-mounted

 • Length: 12.9m

 • Weight: 1400kg

 • Ammunition Type: Power cell and gas canister

 • Ammunition Capacity: Effectively unlimited

 • Effective Range: Ground-based variants are limited to direct-fire visual range, typically 8-12 kilometers. Spaceship mounted variants have standard space engagement ranges.

 • Rate of Fire: Approximately one shot every 2-4 seconds.
SPECIAL FEATURES

 • Power is proportional to the ship’s size and armament rating rather than the number of barrels involved. This property only works within reason: for example, a Star Destroyer with Extreme armament couldn’t cram the entire armament rating into a single barrel. The idea is for Silk ships to have gun counts that feel intuitively sensible.
DESCRIPTION
The Selective Output Rectified Capital Emplacement (SORCE) is a next-generation turbolaser that can consolidate barrel count drastically. Unlike traditional barrel consolidation technologies, however, SORCE does not have a defined ‘gun count.’ A SORCE weapon is not, by default, more powerful than any other turbolaser. Its power is proportional solely to the fraction of the vessel’s reactor strength that is devoted to weapons. This technology is nothing new. Rather than stud Executor-class dreadnoughts with tens of thousands of guns, ancient Imperial designers chose a modest barrel count that dwarfed smaller ships' comparable barrel counts for power.

SORCE technologies can be fitted to and with dual, quad, fastmount, heavy, or long-range armatures, and can be adapted to standard ion cannons.

Strengths:

 • Fewer emplacements per ship leaves more room for armor plating and sensors, while creating fewer targets and reducing damage from any given impact.
Weaknesses:

 • Fewer emplacements per ship makes a higher-priority target of each emplacement.

 • If a ship concentrates its firepower into fewer emplacements, a larger proportion of its firepower is neutralized with every emplacement crippled or destroyed.
