“I don’t know who I’m supposed to be.”
Rann sat, silent. Angry. On the floor of the dilapidated Jedi Temple on Rannon. A failed project of his. An attempt to make something. Something of his own. And all he was left with was bodies following the cataclysm.
An empty Temple, a lonely life. A fractured mind and an identity crisis. Rann was a broken man, and breaking ever more with each passing moment.
He took solace in each and every emotion he could grasp, every change in his state of mind. And what continually affected him was rage, anger, desire, and jealousy.
What exactly was Rann jealous of? What did others have that he didn’t?
Darth Metus Darth Metus , his Father, possessed much. Power and skill in equal measure. Overwhelming influence. Fame. Or notoriety. The Galaxy knew his father. Rann desires that. He wanted to be better than his father. He wanted to kill him. Not out of rage, though Rann felt that in droves for the man, but out of a need to better himself, surpass his peers. A need to be the best.
A lust for greatness would eventually drive The Son to kill The Father.
Srina Talon Srina Talon . She was everything Rann desired to be. Powerful, skilled, in control. Intimidating. He hated her. He remembered Dorvalla, when he was a different man. When he was still him. The rage never abated. She was better than him. Stronger, more in control. Elegant and graceful on the battlefield, an artist in war, while Rann was a butcher at best. He hated her. But he loved her. He hated her because he loved her. More so than her father, Rann desired to best Srina because of everything she represented to him. She wasn’t something for him to replace or surpass, like Isley Verd was for Rann, she was someone whose approval meant everything. For whom besting would be the pinnacle of their relationship. For when he killed her, she’d look up at Rann and respect him.
A lust for recognition would eventually drive The Spawn to kill The Apprentice.
The Monster The Monster was, as of yet, dead. But Rann knew better than to believe that would last. Even though the two had fought to the bitter end, with Rann claiming victory, albeit barely, Rann couldn’t help but continue to fear the possible return from the Netherworld of his one time friend. When he did, however. What’s Dead Should Stay Dead. And this time, Sergei would be at his best, not a zombie. Rann would defeat his former friend, and send him back to hell, because he was better than a mere man. Rann was a god compared to Sergei. And he’d prove it to him. And the galaxy. Sergei wasn’t the monster that bumped in the night. Rann was.
A Lust for superiority would eventually drive The Friend to kill The Soldier
Gerwald Lechner Gerwald Lechner . A Mutt. Reeked of weakness and vulnerabilities. Naalol was still fresh in Rann’s mind, and the weakness Gerwald displayed during their fight with the Beast continued to grate at Rann. Despite what he saw as a glaring weakness, Gerwald had friends. Lovers. People who cared for him. Compared to Rann who, as of yet, remained alone. With no friends or loved ones he still held dear...save one. It irritated Rann, filled him with Jealousy. He deserve it more than Gerwald did. He deserved to be loved, feared, respected, and followed. He deserved to be Lord of the Knights Obsidian, as well. And why not? He was stronger. And he would prove it. Yet, beyond it all. What irritated Rann the most about his Commander was that his compassion made him, in Rann’s eyes, a eventually liability. And it was for this that the Wolf had to die.
A lust for strength would eventually drive The Knight to kill The Commander.
Damsy Callat Damsy Callat . Rann’s sister. Probably the only person who truly cared for Rann. Father’s preferred. And despite himself, he cared for her. She was a weakness. As long as she lived, his enemies could use his love for his sister to control Rann, to kill him. The same weakness Rann hated Gerwald for, his possessed. It would have to eventually be rectified. It didn’t help that, in Rann’s eyes, Damsy was the favorite. Metus’ chosen. She was designed, Rann was simply born. Rann desired that to be rectified as well. Rann was the best. He had to be. He would prove it, and he would clear himself of the weakness he suffered.
A lust for invincibility would eventually drive The Brother to kill The Sister.
And finally, Kyyrk Kyyrk . Rann’s mentor. A creature older than seemingly time. An ancient being. Powerful beyond measure. His demise would come for a variety of reasons. Not least because Rann fancied himself as old fashioned. The apprentice must kill the master. But, beyond that, Voph was incredibly powerful. Incomprehensibly wise. He was a symbol. Something that enduring, that...forever. If Rann was able to kill him, he’d prove that he was stronger than Time. He was the greatest. The Best. Forever.
A lust for immortality would eventually drive The Student to kill The Master.
It was then Rann felt he finally understood what his name was, what his Father had said to him. He knew who he was. He knew what he had to do. At long last, Rann wasn’t Rann anymore.
Rann Thress was dead. In his place stood the Sith Lord of Jealousy, Desire, Lust, and Greed.
He was Darth Qanah. Now, and forever.
