Description: Kal and his comrades, the Beskar'ad, have been in many battle and hunts. And during such times they have seen the need for grenades and yet the weapons are indiscriminate in the damage they release on all in the immediate area.

Being familiar with the capability of the FWG-5 Flechette pistol as well as having used the R-1 recon droid on more then one occasion, Kal combined two concepts for two types of smart grenadier droid. The concept was to use the tracking, course correcting ability with the sensor package of the R-1.

The goal is to have a weapon that could be lobbed out of sight, possibly among allies and hostages, that could eliminate hostiles with extreme prejudice while having minimal to collateral damage while making the weapon mobile, under it's own power, as well as having a more friendly user interface that allows the targets to be specifically chosen by the individual.

An added benefit to the unique frame is that the sphere can be retrieved and unscrewed to allow it to be reloaded with extra ammo, if the individual is carrying spare, and a new power cell plugged in.

Durasteel alloy frame with sensor pack inside. The face of the cylinder ball is covered with regular divots. Half of the divots are scanners that feed into the sensors that are capable of identifying enemies by pre-programmed visual profiles. Once enemy targets are identified it fires flechette-filled pellets instead of heavy canisters, and featured a miniature laser tracking system that tagged targets with an electronic homing signature. This enabled the weapon's pellets to track and follow the target's movements, and make a course correction while in flight.

Upon reaching a range of three meters from the target, the pellet would explode, releasing twelve millimeter long micro flechettes in a shotgun style method of attack. The small repulsorlift that allowed it to either be sent to a location or 'tethered' to an individual linked to them through their HUD, comm, or other such device which allowed the individual to 'choose' specific targets made this weapon mobile and the sensor pack allowed the user to upload up to eight distinct enemy visual profiles (a.k.a. by species or enemy transponders).

The sensor profile allowed the user to upload different targets according to the battle scenario. The probe droid variant used as a template came with an internalized blaster and tracking system which Kal removed and upgraded using the FWG-5's laser tracking system.

The average hovering height is fifteen feet allowing the mini rockets firing the pellets to reach optimal speed/distance before reaching targets.

However the device can be jammed when linked to an HUD or comlink as well as able to be rendered inoperative by an EMP. There is also the possibility for the Type 2 to get hacked and become compromised. Because of the desire to keep the droid's lightweight and affordable the power cell is small allowing for only one use, and only five minutes of repulsor flying time (1 to 3 posts depending on length of post/timeframe) The pellets can course correct but once within 3 meters of target the ammo is locked in their trajectory.

Strengths & Weaknesses

(+) ranged weapon
(+) able to 'select' enemies from friendlies thanks to sensor pack
(+) able to be remote controlled by user for recon then user identified target acquisition
(+) able to be reloaded/new power cell replacement in the field
(+) able to designate an area for bombardment by locking onto it's signal
(+) course correcting pellets that can track 'enemy' targets
(+) mobile

(-) able to be remotely hacked
(-) no defensive characteristics
(-) EMP susceptible
(-) when transponder is activated it is easily 'seen' on enemy radar/comm frequencies

Suggestions

While I applaud your innovation, at it's core, the reason for utilizing a grenade is to provide mass indiscriminate damage in a specific area.

Let me bring up some canon information:

Fragmentation Grenades: Weighing in at .5kG these guys are pretty small. Frag granades unleashed metal shrapnel and dealt slashing damage. This made them highly effective against unarmored targets. The typical blast radius was about 3 to 4 meters

The recon droid you gave as an example is at 2.4 feet in height at .75 meters, far larger than any fragmentation grenade. The average size of a fragmentation grenade is as follows.

Weight 1 lb 5 oz [595 grams] Length 3 5/6" [111mm] length 2 5/16" [59mm]

There is no feasible way that a grenade can prevent any collateral damage, civilian deaths, or unintended damage. The nature of a grenade is to sense an outward explosion of it's inner contents plus the shrapnel of it's container, which cannot be controlled due to the nature of force. In comparison, a thermal grenade has an exact radius it will explode and it will never cross that range.

This is expanded more with the choice of ammunition of flechette. Flecheets are tiny nail like ammunition with fins at the end of it to allow the force of the explosion to send it airborne and to fly further. Much like the flechette rockets used in today's armed forces, intended to inflict maximum damage to a population.

Lets look at the canon tech you provided:
http://starwars.wiki...lechette_pistol

It was loaded with flechette-filled pellets instead of heavy canisters, and featured a miniature laser tracking system that tagged targets with an electronic homing signature. This enabled the weapon's pellets to track and follow the target's movements, and make a course correction while in flight. Upon reaching a range of three meters from the target, the pellet would explode, releasing twelve millimeter long micro flechettes in a shotgun style method of attack. This hail of flechettes would be propelled forward by the pellets momentum, spreading out to the radius of a meter or so to puncture and strike a target, often with enough force to pierce Blast vests and Stormtrooper armor.

Designed to be lightweight and aerodynamic, the flechettes used micro-repulsors to propel the pellets up to fifty meters away. Alternatively, the weapon was capable of an alternative fire mode that fired blasts of "heat based energy", many pistoleers preferred this setting over the messy results of the pellets.
The miniature laser tracking system is on the pistol in itself, not on the pellets. Coming in at 1.3kg that is still a fairly large weapon, with 8 pellets filled with 12 mm long micro flechettes. As this is a pistol, this means that the sapient handling it is who is taking the time to aim and shoot at their respective targets. You are seeking to automate this by adding a droid brain, which will significantly increase the weight and bulk. Just like the R1 Recon Droid you provided.

Canon wise, there are droids and tech that are able to retain information based on species, much like the security scanners in docking bay ports. However, the relative size of these droids are larger than that of a grenade, and having the technology to recognize that many different configurations is unlikely.

For example:
ILF-5000 Life Form Scanner - The ILF-5000 was a specialized scanner that was tuned to locate and identify life forms. The device could hold data on ten species at a time and would automatically indicate if it detected one of them. If it detected a life form not programmed into it, it would just give the size, distance and direction of the life form.

A better option would be to perhaps go for an alternative fire mode that fired blasts of "heat based energy". (Much like pistol)

Also, instead of a grenade, how about a drone flier instead? An unmanned aerial vehicle that can fly over head and track targets through the air, all the while relaying information back to whoever is guiding it?

So without further ado.

Without Dev Thread

Type 1

Please remove the Type 1 option.

Type 2.
  • Go with a UAV or a comparable recon droid as the R-1 instead of a grenade, using the canon droid as a template in size and weight.
  • Please write in clearly strengths and weaknesses in a list format.
  • Change scanning to only include up to 10 lifeforms (Species) in it's database systems. Use a tracking laser to provide the information necessary to track the targets. Add in the option that targets can be acquired and deployed via transmission to the individual controlling it for a broader range of target options.
  • You can reasonably used the flechette option for this as the pellets require at least 3 meter ( 9.8 feet in distance) before they are activated to get the appropriate amount of force to send them flying. However add in the following clauses.

  • It will require a small rocket of sorts to deliver a single pellet in a warhead to the designated area, requiring an advanced targeting interface to be able to deploy multiple rockets with their respective pellet. These rockets use micro-repulsors to propel the pellets up to 50 meters only.

  • This hail of flechettes would be propelled forward by the force of the pellets container momentum, spreading out to the radius of a meter or so to puncture and strike a target, often with enough force to pierce Blast vests and Stormtrooper armor. Which means that any friendly or innocent bystander standing within that meter radius range will get hit.

  • Because of a flechettes natural anti personal properties, and that one meter range, the clause of being collateral damage free will have to be removed.

  • EMP and power draining weaknesses apply.
With Dev Thread

Type 1 Grenade.
  • If you really want a grenade I will require a dev thread of at least 20 quality posts specifically designing, developing, creating, and testing for something this small due to the powercell required and the applicable lifeform scanning technology required.
  • Change it to a heat based energy charge where the electronic homing signature tracks targeted lifeforms.
  • Add collateral damage because a grenade still creates fragmentation damage, so it can still cause damage to innocent bystanders.
  • Add in a delayed timing of 2 seconds from pellet activation due to the necessity of the lifeform scanner to appropriately complete it's scan of the inhabitants around it.
  • Change scanning to only include up to 2 lifeforms (Species) in it's database systems due to size.
  • Please write in clearly strengths and weaknesses in a list format.
  • Increase size and weight, add in that they are bulky and heavy to carry.
  • Add blast radius of 3 to 4 meters for the fragmentation of the durasteel grenade container.
  • I will request that this only be used by PC characters due to potential abuse.
  • EMP and power draining weaknesses apply.
Flechette option:
  • If you really want the flechette option for this, note that the pellets need kinetic force applied to transfer that respective kinetic energy into the pellets. Canon states that these will activate within 3 meters ( 9.0ft) from their respective target -- which appears to be the best distance of ensuring they get activated without simply being kicked away.
  • So for this adaptation, you will need an additional +10 posts researching adapting the flechette technology and the electronic homing signature then you can only hold up to 3 flechette pellets inside. Add in the following details:

  • This hail of flechettes would be propelled forward by the force of the grenades explosive potential pellets momentum, spreading out to the radius of a meter or so to puncture and strike a target, often with enough force to pierce Blast vests and Stormtrooper armor. Which means that any friendly or innocent bystander standing within that meter radius range will get hit.

[*]
Because of a flechettes natural anti personal properties, and that one meter range, the clause of being collateral damage free will have to be removed.

[*]

Type 2 Grenade

  • All the notations above if you want the grenade option and flechette, however, you get the luxury of adding more options for targets as it is controlled by a third party. All potential hacking, and EMP and power draining weaknesses apply.
  • Please write in clearly strengths and weaknesses in a list format for the Type 2.
