Approved Tech Sith Empire 'Torrential' Hyperdrive Booster

Status

Intent: A prize for the fleeters of the Stygian Caldera rebellion, on both sides.
Development Thread: The Silver Jedi Come. 435 posts, minus 150 since it began as a dominion. A significant portion of this thread involved almost 20 flotillas chasing each other around in confined hyperlanes and racing to provide theatre support. It's no stretch to say that the IC rationale described below was crucial to a large chunk of the thread.
Manufacturer: Sith Empire (Ashin/Voracitos/Zambrano era)
Model: Torrential Hyperdrive Booster
Affiliation: This technology was lost and scattered. A few examples were recovered during the Sith Order's campaign against the Silver Jedi throughout the Stygian Caldera. The ONLY people who can use this technology in a submission are the following: [member="Jerek Zenduu"], [member="Sor-Jan Xantha"], [member="Aisha Marc"], [member="Reshmar"], [member="Gir Quee"], [member="Darth Ignus"], [member="Niysha"], [member="Horus"], [member="Darth Carnifex"], [member="Darth Prazutis"], Velok the Younger, [member="Charzon Loulan"], [member="Suravi Teigra"], [member="Rozalyne Kurganova"], [member="Darth Raxis"], [member="Tai Fa"], and [member="Catalys Maijora"].
Modularity: No. It is a component.
Production: Limited - meaning it can ONLY be used for Limited Production ships.
Materials: Advanced hyperdrive-derivative components

Strengths:
  • A ship outfitted with the Torrential Hyperdrive Booster can go much, much faster than normal for the duration of two consecutive system-to-system hyperspace transits within a context comparable to a sector map (Korriban to Bosthirda and then Dromund Kaas, for example, or Korriban to Nicht Ka and then Ziost). Consider the Torrential a bit like a SLAM for hyperdrives. A vessel with a Class 3 drive or slower will travel at Class 1 speeds for the duration of those two consecutive jumps. A vessel with a Class 2 drive will travel at Class 0.5 speeds for that duration. A vessel with a Class 1 drive will travel at Class 0.3 speeds for that duration, comparable to an elite private yacht. A vessel with a drive faster than Class 1 cannot benefit from the Torrential, as such drives are often unstable, and would become more so under the influence of the Torrential.
  • Mumbles in Kissai. Hey, you could learn Kissai.
Weaknesses:
  • Once the Torrential booster has been used, it cannot be used again for roughly a week IC. It's old and experimental technology, powerful but unreliable.
  • If a ship gets interdicted while using the Torrential booster, the decant will be especially violent, comparable to use of a HIMS. The ship can shake, experience damage, and suffer casualties.
  • Mumbles in Kissai. Somewhat distracting.

Description: The battle for the Stygian Caldera was unlike anything seen in the modern era. Almost twenty separate flotillas vied for strategic control of an entire sector. Transit times and hyperdrive classes mattered as fleets chased each other, limited by the slowest common denominator. The ability to deploy reinforcements quickly across a two-system gap would have proved utterly crucial.

These forces -- the Sith Order, the Silver Jedi, the Republic, the New Republic, the Commonwealth, and the Directorate, along with various corporate fleets -- were far from the first to experience such issues inside the cramped hyperlanes of the Stygian Caldera. One of their predecessors, as it happens, had money to burn.

In the course of the campaign, and its aftermath, forces on both sides found themselves gifted with a strange piece of technology by sources unknown. This experimental hyperdrive booster dated back to the modern Sith Empire, under the reigns of Ashin Varanin/Darth Desmius, Darth Voracitos, and Kaine Zambrano/Darth Carnifex. Lost in the Sith Empire's collapse, the hyperdrive booster technology reappeared just slightly too late, and too evenhandedly, to make a strategic difference...this time.

The hyperdrive booster technology interfaces with the existing vessel's hyperspace bubble and strengthens it almost exponentially, in ways that are not fully understood. What matters is that it works and works well -- once. Roughly a week of repair is needed after each use, even for replicated versions with the best-quality components.

No matter the size of the Torrential module -- snubfighter or capital ship -- and no matter whether the module is an original or a replica, people hear voices around it. Specifically, they hear an old male voice mumbling in Kissai, a high-priestly variant of the ancient Sith language. The mumbling is quiet, just background noise for the most part. This can be somewhat distracting, but hey, you could learn Kissai.

Primary Source: Not influenced by any Chaos submissions.

When I was speaking with Spencer earlier this afternoon, I realized I hadn't added a hard upper limit to the speed of hyperdrive that could benefit from the Torrential. I've just added this:

  • A vessel with a drive faster than Class 1 cannot benefit from the Torrential, as such drives are often unstable, and would become more so under the influence of the Torrential.
