Maybe leaving Alderaan on an empty stomach wasn't such a wise idea.

After arriving on Alderaan, Jane quickly felt the need to leave. It felt wrong to sit there and lick wounds while the galaxy burned. She had no idea what she was doing, but she was certain that she couldn't achieve anything on Alderaan, in the Temple of Grey's Gardens. Admittedly, taking some lessons before leaving could have been a good idea. It would also have been smart to replenish her food supplies before leaving. But Jane heard about a 'shuttle' going to Naboo and wasted no time. She rushed up the ramp, buckled herself in, and endured the nightmarish journey.

Keren, the city where the metal box of doom and dismay landed, was not too bad. Jane didn't mind; it was better than Coruscant, if a little too neat. Still, the city was alive and, without a doubt, a good starting point for finding someone who could help. Or so she thought. In reality, most people ignored the short girl, either finding her creepy or assuming she was a child who had gotten lost and was told to return to her parents. Rude, considering she didn't even remember her parents.

To make matters worse, after a few hours of asking around, her stomach grumbled, alerting her to her hunger. All while she had no credit to spare. Nonetheless, Jane managed to find the market square, where the aroma of roasted meats, fruits, fish, and vegetables lingered. If she could smell, it would have smelled amazing, judging by how some people raised their noses for just a few seconds to sniff the air. Jane did not eat meat or fish, so she went in search of some fruit or vegetables.

Her hunt led her to a stall selling the juiciest fruit she'd ever seen, as far as she could remember anyway. One sprung out to her, a fruit called the Shuura, according to the signs.

"Hello, sir. How much does this Shuura fruit cost?" Jane asked in her usual monotone, flat voice. The stall owner tilted his head down and gazed at her. "20 credits, little miss." He replied, before his lips curled up into a smirk.

"I cannot afford 20 credits. That's a lot of credits. Can we trade? Or perhaps a cheaper fruit? I hav-" Before she could continue, the man's smirk turned to an annoyed frown. Another child who came to his 'pristine' shop without any credits. "20. Credits. Take or leave it. Get out of here if you can't afford my fruits."

"But sir, I am hungr-" The man slammed his palms down on the stall table. "Leave. I'm not interested in shady little beggars like you. What's next, are you going to steal?! Gone with you, before I call security."

The market of Keren was alive with colour and movement, sunlight glinting off the bright fruits and polished stalls. Eve walked at an easy pace, Isari trotting close at her heels, her silvery fur catching the morning light. It was good to be here: for just a moment away from the war, for the quiet hours spent with Ala in Theed, whose laughter had been a balm to weary hearts. But this visit wasn’t just for comfort. Naboo’s beauty was the surface; beneath it, Eve was here for something else entirely.

The Hidden Path needed friends, and every world mattered.

She inhaled the air — warm bread, citrus, the soft bite of brewed caf — and let the calm of the market soak in. Isari’s nose twitched at every scent, her tail a slow, curious sway. Eve smiled faintly as she glanced over the stalls for breakfast. That was when she heard the raised voice.

"Leave. I'm not interested in shady little beggars like you. What's next, are you going to steal?! Gone with you, before I call security"

The words carried sharp enough to draw her gaze. A merchant stood rigid behind his stall, glaring down at a small girl with lavender skin, white hair and an expression far too steady for her size. Eve’s brow furrowed. Hunger clung to the girl.

Before she thought twice, she was already moving.

"Excuse me," Eve said, her voice even and polite. The merchant looked up, startled as she reached for the counter. "I’ll take that shuura. In fact, I’ll take two. Thank you."

The man hesitated, but credits were credits. He grunted, muttered something about 'busy mornings', and Eve slid a chip across the counter without pause.

She crouched slightly, the better to meet the girl’s eyes, and offered the fruit with a small, steady smile.

"Here you are," she said simply. Then, with a gentle hand on the girl’s shoulder, she guided her a few steps aside from the stall’s sour air. Isari followed, pausing to sniff curiously at the stranger, silver eyes bright and unblinking.

"You okay?" Eve asked, voice quiet enough to belong only to them.

Just as Jane was about to turn away and try her luck elsewhere, a woman in all white swooped up next her. Her black eyes lifted up to the woman, studying her and the interaction as she bought two pieces of fruit and spoke to the man in a gentle and polite tone. Then she returned her gaze to the man and the stiff way he handed the woman the fruit. The shift of emotions back and forth was fascinating to her. Both their souls sang such a different tune.

When the woman lowered herself forwards and handed her the fruits, Jane carefully took both in her small hands before returning her gaze to her eye, noting the eye patch but immediately didn't care. She was the last one who could judge.

"Thank you. That is very kind of you." The girl replied, before allowing her to lead her away from the stall. Jane rotated her doll-like head over her shoulder, looking at the man one more time. She didn't give him a nasty eye or anything, but the cold and distant look she always had was enough to make the man to feel a shiver down his spine and turn his head away to a new customer.

When they arrived at a more peaceful location a few steps away, far enough away from the stall's sour vibe, Jane's attention drifted to the woman. No longer surrounded by people, Jane finally saw the animal besides her, causing Jane's fluted cybernetics ears to raise in a mild sensation of excitement. Jane swiftly stacked one of the shuura fruits on top of the other and lowered her now-free palm to the Miralune Fox, allowing her to sniff better.
"Hello, you beautiful friend." Jane spoke with a softer tone than usual, before her eyes danced back to the woman.

"Yes, I am okay. He was very unkind. I was going to trade, not steal, I have very pretty seeds from Alderaan." Jane concluded, before she extended her free hand out to the woman. Can't talk to strangers after all, even if they are kind. An introduction is a must. "I am Jane. Thank you again for your help. I will repay the credits once I have them."

Jane took a closer look at the woman's outfit just as she was about to bite into the fruit, causing her to stop. Those white robes. Was she..? Jane's head tilted slightly to the right before she spoke again, copying the woman's quiet tone.
"Are you a Jedi as well?"

Eve shook her head softly, her smile easing any sense of obligation.

"There’s no need to pay me back. I was going to get one for myself anyway."

Isari leaned in then, delicately sniffing Jane’s offered hand before settling back on her haunches. Her silver eyes, bright and unblinking, regarded the girl with quiet interest. Through the bond, Eve felt it: a ripple of wordless impression and acceptance that could be translated simply in Eve's mind.

~Friend~

Eve smiled and took Jane’s small hand in her own and gave it a gentle squeeze, grounding and steady.

"I’m Everest Vale, but Eve is fine," she said simply, before tilting her head toward the fox. "And this is Isari. She doesn’t often take to people this quickly."

Isari’s tail flicked once, a soft punctuation, and Eve’s lips curved into something warmer.

"She likes being scratched just behind the ears, if you’d like to try."

Her gaze lingered on Jane for a moment, soft, curious and without judgment, before she nodded at the question that followed.

"Yes, I am a Jedi. Have you met many before?"

The question was light, not pressing, as Eve shifted slightly so they were out of the busiest current of market-goers.

"And what brought you all the way to Naboo, Jane?"

Everest and Isari. They seemed like good souls. At the very least, their souls sounded gentle and kind. "It is nice to meet you both. I am glad she likes me." Jane replied, before being told that Isari liked ear scratches.

She wouldn't need to hear that twice.

Jane bent down through her knees to reach Isari's eye level and began softly scratching her behind her ears while getting a closer look at her. Such a beautiful animal, and so fluffy with bright eyes. Everest was lucky to have such a lovely friend. Her gaze had moved to Everest once, to look at her robes and ask her question before she continued scratching Isari.

When Everest answered her question, her fluted Sephi ears danced slightly, showing that she was paying attention, before straightening herself a second later. She quickly followed Everest to escape being bumped into by someone walking past, and came to a stop next to them both again. Then, at last, her metallic eyes danced back to her.
"No. I was on Coruscant for only a few moon cycles. I've met some Jedi learners, but many did not make it to the evacuation ship. And an elderly lady who was teaching the basics of the Force. I am not sure if she made it."

Jane paused for a second, her gaze shifting from Everest to the market all around them. Not once did her expression falter, or did her tone change while she spoke. "The evacuation led to Alderaan. I didn't like it there. It felt wrong to sit still after Coruscant. So I left. I took the first metal box- ... shuttle I could find, which was headed for Naboo. I'd like to see if I can help someone. Or get a job to earn credits, and then help somebody."

"How about you? Why are you two here?"

Isari leaned into Jane’s hand with a soft, pleased sound, her tail giving a single, slow flick as she pressed closer. Eve’s smile deepened at the sight, a small warmth that softened the edge of the bustling market around them.

"She likes you," she murmured, almost to herself. "She’s usually more cautious with strangers."

She let Jane speak without interruption, listening intently. The girl’s words were steady, but there was a weight behind them. Loss carried without complaint. Eve’s silver eye softened, and though she didn’t say it aloud, she recognised that quiet strength.

"That was brave of you," she said gently. "To leave Alderaan. Most would have stayed, but to feel restlessness and a need to help others in the face of it... That's the mark of a pure heart."

When Jane spoke of the elderly Force teacher, Eve’s gaze lowered briefly, her thumb brushing the edge of the fruit in her hand.

"I hope she made it," she said. "People like her… they have a way of surviving."

Her heart ached quietly at the thought of Jane on Coruscant during the fall, small, alone, and forced to flee. She hesitated, a faint stammer catching on her breath before she found her words again.

"I… I was there too, when the Empire came." Her voice stayed low, a thread of quiet honesty, and then she drew in a slow breath, steadying herself. "I’m glad you’re safe, Jane."

When Jane’s question came, Eve welcomed it, the shift grounding her.

"I was visiting a friend," she said with a faint smile, and then her voice lowered. "But I’m also doing some work for my Master. We’re… looking for support, against the Empire."

She stood then, eye glancing down the street.

"Would you like to find somewhere to sit? Maybe we can find a café and have a proper breakfast? My treat."

Brave to leave? Jane hadn't considered that. There wasn't much to keep her grounded there, and she barely knew people. But then she remembered her conversation with Gavin, and how she figured that most people would not do what he was doing: capture enemies. She just never imagined that the same applied to Jedi. Wasn't fighting part of being a Jedi? "Maybe." Jane finally spoke, shrugging her shoulders slightly. "I just remembered I took my oath to honor life. And I couldn't do it there."

Jane's gaze lingered on Everest, catching the dip in her expression, the silence in her words, and the way her soul's melody changed ever so slightly. She couldn't fully grasp it, but she assumed it had something to do with a faint sadness.
"I'm glad you are safe too." The girl said after after a few seconds of observing Everest to understand her emotions.

The atmosphere changed again shortly after, with Everest seeming to be more calm. All while Jane's interest was piqued.

"Oh. Work for your Master? Jedi work, I assume. That makes you very brave as well. Wait-" The half-Sephi took a step closer to Everest, her eyes widening slightly as she looked up at her. "Is it work and help, that I can help with?"

Before she could ask any further questions, Everest offered a proper breakfast. That seemed to cause Jane to pause, her free hand lowering on top of the armor plate as she observed her body internally. She knew she was hungry, but it wasn't until now that she realized her stomach was grumbling, and it was worse than she expected.
"I would like that. Thank you."

Her doll-like face turned from left to the right, looking around at the market for anything that resembled a "café".
"I have never been to a café before."

Eve said nothing to Jane’s words about her oath, but her smile softened. Quietly, she regarded the girl for a moment, thinking how familiar that resolve was, how much it mirrored the way she herself clung to honouring life, even in a galaxy that so often asked her to do otherwise.

The silence between them that followed wasn’t heavy. It was a small, shared stillness, a thread that passed through the memory of Coruscant without either of them needing to speak it aloud.

When Jane’s question came, Eve’s silver eye lifted to her. There was something both curious and gentle in her expression as she tilted her head, a small smile warming her face.

"Let’s get some food first," she said, her tone careful but light.

Then, when Jane admitted she had never been to a café before, Eve’s brow lifted in surprise, followed almost immediately by a quiet laugh, soft and bright.

"Well then," she said. "It’s your lucky day. I found the perfect place my second morning here."

Isari padded after them as they walked, her tail flicking with quiet contentment. They moved down the high street until Eve turned them into a smaller lane, away from the bustle of the market. Here, the city seemed to slow. Sunlight draped itself over cobbled paths lined with flower boxes, their blooms spilling over the edges in soft shades of pink and gold. Balconies leaned low with curling ivy, and the hum of conversation faded until all that remained was the quiet charm of a street untouched by haste.

They came at last to a modest little café tucked against a bakery, its wooden sign gently swaying in the breeze. Warm light spilled from its windows, carrying with it the scent of fresh bread and sugared pastries.

As they stepped inside, Eve drew in a slow, appreciative breath.

"There," she murmured with a note of delight, her hand coming to rest lightly on Jane’s shoulder as she guided her towards a small table tucked near the window. The interior was quiet and welcoming, its sleepy atmosphere wrapped in the smell of tea and caf, the clink of cups, and the hum of soft conversation.

Once they settled in, Eve looked up to the owner — a familiar face now — with an easy smile.

"A pot of deychin tea for two, please, and... some poached eggs and a cinnamon roll," she said, before glancing to Jane. "And for you, Jane? Anything you’d like, take your time." She shot her a gentle, encouraging smile.

It seemed to be Jane's lucky day indeed, in more ways than one; ways she didn't realize at the time but would eventually shape her future. But that wasn't the case right now; she was here, in the present. And within that present, the short girl was waddling after the beautiful woman with snow-white hair, accompanied by a silver Eshan Miralune Fox.

The silence of Naboo was unlike anything she'd ever seen. The sunlight reflected on the cobblestone floors, and the scent of the most vibrant flowers blooming peacefully reached her nose. The shouting of the market stalls and the hustle and bustle of the people began to fade away, until there was nothing but their quiet footsteps and the cheerful songs of the avians that flew above.

Her first love was for the forests. But perhaps, Jane could learn to love this as well.

The café they entered was the cherry on top of their already perfect cake. It was as if she'd stepped into a warm blanket, calm and quiet, inviting and soothing, with the most delicious smell. Jane had no idea where to look or where to go, but thankfully Everest kindly directed her to a table near the window. The short girl half-climbed up onto the chair, until she came to a seat infront of Everest, her feet dangling off the floor.

Jane's gaze shifted up to the café's owner, who looked at them both with the kindest and warmest smile. In some ways, it reminded her of the old man who also lived on Naboo. Maybe she'd visit him one day. She heard Everest's order, before realizing it was her turn to order whatever she'd like.

And she was not prepared.

"Oh. Okay. Uhm." Jane began, while those black orbs began to shoot from left to right, looking at what other people were eating in the café and reading the menu on the back of the wall. "I would also like a cinnamon roll. And. Uhm. A green pearberry toast." That seemed safe enough; it didn't sound like it contained meat.

Jane's doll-like head returned to Everest as the kind owner wrote down their order and left.
"I like it here. I understand why you call it a perfect place. Thank you for taking me here. You are very sweet." There was a brief pause before she leaned forwards, her longer strands of hair falling over her shoulders. "What is a poached egg?"

Eve smiled quietly at Jane's thanks and dipped her head in a single nod, a gesture of gentle acknowledgment rather than modesty. There was something endearing about how easily Jane gave her gratitude, without guile or hesitation. It felt rare.

When the question came — so sincere, so unexpected — Eve couldn't help the soft breath of amusement that slipped from her. Not laughter, but something much fonder and lighter.

"A poached egg," she said, folding her hands loosely in her lap. "Is an egg cooked gently in hot water. The white turns soft, like a cloud, and the yolk stays creamy on the inside." She tilted her head slightly, a playful glint in her silver eye. "You're welcome to try mine when it arrives, if you'd like."

Before long, the tea arrived. A round, dark pot and two ceramic cups were placed on their table, steam curling delicately into the air. Eve leaned forward and lifted the lid, peeking in with soft curiosity. She smiled to herself as she closed it again. Loose leaf. Not teabags.

She poured them both a cup, the scent of deychin rising, earthy, floral, with a touch of citrus that lingered lightly in the air. It always reminded her of home.

As they waited for the food, Eve rested her hands around her cup and allowed herself a longer glance toward the girl across from her. There was a stillness in Jane, but it wasn't dull. She watched the world intently, with eyes that missed very little, curious, observant, and strangely serene for someone so young. It warmed something in Eve's heart to see it: the way Jane took in the world like she wanted to understand it, not control it.

"So, Jane," she said gently, her voice quiet in the hush of the café. "Do you know where you're going next? Your destination, I mean."

There was no urgency in her question, only the soft offer that followed.

"And is there anything I can do to help?"

Jane's head tilted at the explanation of the poached egg. It sounded almost identical to a regular boiled egg, though she wouldn't call the egg white soft. That might have been the main difference. When Everest followed after with an invitation to taste hers when it arrived, the girl nodded her head. Despite her refusal to eat meat and fish, she was less strict about eggs and cheese. "Okay. I would like that. You can taste my toast as well."

In silence, Jane traced Everest's every movement as she began to pour the tea that arrived not long after. It came with a pleasant smell, reminding her of a summer meadow surrounded by fruit trees. A far cry from the tea the old man used to make for her on Naboo; he tried, but he couldn't get past the bitter black water. When Everest handed Jane her tea, she gratefully wrapped her small purple hands around the ceramic cup.

The direct heat was always comforting against her bare hands, the only real sensation she could feel in the distance, unlike the cold or most touches.

While waiting for their breakfast to arrive, the girl took the time to look around the café once again. This time not to figure out what to eat, but to truly take in the view of it all. The humanoids sipping their coffee or tea, some holding a datapad and others holding holobooks. Some were having a pastry, others a toast, and some nothing. Each had something in common: they were all having a good time, and their songs in the Force seemed at ease, which was appropriate for such a cozy café.

When Jane's pitch-black eyes returned to Everest, she caught her looking at her. However, she paid it no mind and simply returned the look, not blinking or her casting gaze away politely.

"Oh. I do not know." Jane replied, lifting the cup from the table and taking a small sip. Gosh, it was tasty. It was as if spring and the first taste of summer had met her taste buds. She took one look at her cup as she lowered it back to the table, then returned her attention to Everest. "I don't know where to go. Perhaps there is a store where I can work for a few days. For credit, so I can eat. After that I will find a new metal bo- ... shuttle."

Jane's painted-on brows lowered slightly after a brief pause in response to Everest's soft question.
"Do you maybe know where I can help others? You are a Jedi, so you help others. I want to do that too."

Eve didn't ask about her parents. The way Jane spoke — with such certainty about leaving, about needing work, about hopping between shuttles like stepping stones in a river — told Eve enough. There was no mention of home, of family waiting at the end of a path. Just a girl trying to make her way through a galaxy that was collapsing in on itself.

She smiled softly, though a hint of sorrow rested at the edges of it. There was so much this girl had clearly already faced, and yet she sat there, curious, kind, and full of questions. That said more than any datapad ever could.

Eve took a sip of her tea, the warmth spreading through her chest. She watched the steam curl upward for a moment, then turned her gaze back to Jane, her voice soft as the hum of a breeze.

"I won't lie to you, Jane," she began, her tone honest but gentle. "The galaxy is entering troubling times. A lot of people will be hurt. Some already have been."

She let that settle, not for dramatic effect, but because it was the truth. Her silver eye didn't waver.

"But hope isn't gone. It never is. And if you truly want to help others… the way a Jedi does…"

She leaned in slightly, lowering her voice.

"There's a place. It's only just beginning, but we're building something there. My Master is leading it."

She paused, and her voice became a whisper.

"Former Grandmaster Valery Noble," she added, watching Jane's face for recognition. "Maybe you've heard of her."

She waited a beat before continuing, voice steady, warm, and full of quiet invitation.

"If you wanted to help… and learn what it means to walk that path… you could come with me. Help us build something better. You wouldn't have to wander alone anymore."

She didn't press. The offer was there, open like a path through the trees, but it would be Jane's choice whether to follow it.
