Shark Muscle

Location - Purkis Estate, Kuat City, Kuat

Now that Hadleigh Purkis had brought Kuat into the Free Worlds Coalition, everything changed.

Simply put; she is a small woman amongst countless entities, and if just one threatens her she will need to defend herself. Hadleigh never was a soldier, she had never felt compelled to complete combat training nor did she particularly enjoy the sight of blood. She is tough, but that toughness extends to the battlefield of enterprise.

That is why the Matriarch of house Purkis and head of KDY is seeking out the chief of her personal security.

One such candidate happened to be a particular Herglic, and Hadleigh awaited an introduction with he who she may very well one day owe her life. The candidates that arrived before him simply didn't fit the bill. One thought too highly of herself, another was totally meatheaded, and the most recent case arrived drunk. Hadleigh lounges back the chair behind her desk, keeping her comms on for news of the next arrival.

Ghorua didn't like the sight of blood.

Or the taste. Or the feel of it splashing against his armor. He especially detested the scent of blood.

He often wondered why he surrounded himself with it. Why most of his weapons drew large amounts of blood from their victims. Why he tempted fate, tempted himself, to follow the path of the warrior. The Shark had no answers.

An impossibly tall being stood in a comparatively small room, shrugging on a large white suit coat. The outfit was tailor-made for him, a giant canvas of spotless white, contrasting heavily with his thick black skin, and his glittering onyx eyes. The goliath buttoned his coat, lips pursed in concentration, focused on the simple task. He dexterously looped the buttons into their holes, showing off sleight of hand one wouldn't expect from such a large being. The massive Herglic turned around, to face a vast bed, occupied by a small creature.

"Well," Ghorua started, glancing coyly at the five-year-old girl sitting cross-legged on his mattress. "What do you think? Do I look fancy enough?"

"Fancy?" The girl leaned forward, letting her dark eyes observe the Shark, brushing a stray strand of black hair from her face. "Yep, fancy. Why do you need to look fancy, Daddy?"

Ghorua smiled, planting his body beside his daughter, making her bounce slightly. "You see, Minna, I am going to go get a job."

"Don't you have a job?" Minna put her hands out, reaching for something invisible. Knowing what this meant, the Herglic picked up Minna and placed her on his shoulder.

"Kinda. It's gonna be a real job though, not like bounty hunting. Less dangerous, I think." Ghorua stared at the door to the room, thinking hard. Was it safer? Probably not, considering the galaxy they found themselves in. But it would be steady, and if Ghorua could land it, that would mean he could guarantee food for his daughter. Kuat Drive Yards had a storied history, one Ghorua made sure to learn before applying. He'd also researched his possible employer, and deemed the situation legitimate.

The Shark was nothing if not thorough.

"It'll be good for us, I promise."

---
Ghorua walked nonchalantly down the streets of Kuat City, avoiding attention as best as a 10'5'' Herglic in a white three piece suit could. It wasn't a long walk from the spaceport to the Purkis estate, and for that, Ghorua was thankful.

Finally, he reached the estate, whistling appreciatively to himself, but not daring to step on the grounds. He had sent a message ahead, saying that he had arrived, so all he had to do was wait. He'd rather not make a bad first impression by stampeding the place.

Ghorua the Shark was notoriously terrible at first impressions.

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

The estate itself was more beautiful than anything.

Tall walls obscured the delicate garden within, a singular pathway leading up to the main entrance protected by two guards and undoubtedly a well-hidden security system. Seeing as he had been invited, the Herglic would find himself allowed inside and once in Hadleigh's chief aide guides him to her office. A door slid open, revealing a rather large and starkly decorated office. Hadleigh sitting quietly at her desk on the far end.

It proved to be a walk, but a less awkward walk for a large species than it was for any human. Perhaps just the right size for him, really.

She looks up from her datapad, setting it aside. "You must be here for the security position, yes?" It wasn't hard to guess, considering all her meetings this day were scheduled for such. Although there was no harm in being certain, it wouldn't be the first time she had forgotten a meeting and it certainly wouldn't be the last either.

Hadleigh's green eyes follow his movement. "Please take a seat," considering they had known he was coming ahead of time they managed to accommodate a larger chair for someone of his stature.

After all, it isn't KDY if they're not thinking ahead.

[member="Ghorua the Shark"]

As Ghorua plodded past yet another exotic flower in the gardens, he couldn't help but slow his pace to marvel. The petals were a vibrant green, and were almost pulsing in the daylight. Trying not to be rude, Ghorua caught up with the chief aide, enjoying the area peacefully.

The Shark was escorted inside, suit shining, hands firmly clasped behind him. The office lay before him. Ghorua steeled himself for the interview, muscles tensing powerfully for but a second, before entering the room.

Ghorua ducked through the door, dark eyes scanning the room, taking in the entire situation before turning his attention to the woman seated behind the desk. Intelligent green eyes, and warm brown hair.

Yep. This was her.

Ghorua put on a content smile, made terrifying by rows of sharp teeth. "Miss Purkis." He inclined his head, showing off the blowhole on the top of his head. "It's an honor to meet you."

The Herglic bounty hunter moved to the enormous chair, each footstep shaking the room. He sat slowly, happy that his size had been accommodated for. It showed Kuat Drive Yards was just as meticulous in planning as he was.

The revelation was appreciated, and noted.

"You have quite the place here." Ghorua gestured around, happy and seemingly comfortable. "Your garden is absolutely lovely. Now, I'm no botanist, but I haven't seen half of those plants before. And I've been around."

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

"My, I never had imagined someone in your line of work carried an appreciation for nature."

Perhaps her comment came across as ignorant, but she seemed genuine in her appreciation of his appreciation. "Breaking tropes is exactly what we do around here," she smiles. Although her white human teeth were far less impressive than countless razors lining his jaw. "At the very least, I can also take that as an acute attention to detail--Sharp eyes." The woman didn't need to bring up the more obvious advantages that a Herglic brings to the table. There were many, and each one no less impressive than the last.

"Do forgive me, though, if I am not one for small talk. That may change if you land the position though." Hadleigh made it her business to stick to business. Although she technically wasn't the C.E.O. of Kuat Drive Yards, she effectively served as its chief visionary and spokesperson. Many of the new KDY designs were conceptualized first in her dreams, before passing through extensive trials on paper and in prototypes.

"I'll be candid with you... Kuat is rebuilding, and has drawn more attention to itself since joining the coalition than since before the netherworld crisis. I am inevitably tied to this world's fate as much as it is tied to mine. My advisors have convinced me I need a new Security Chief. Someone who can see to my personal protection and defense of property. This isn't a position to be taken lightly. You would be both bodyguard and overseer, but I promise you that I take care of my own." A less than formal introduction, yet Hadleigh wasn't going to lie to him either.

Such a position is certainly less than orthodox in most parts of the galaxy where a security chief sat in a dark room and moved personnel around like Dejarik pieces on the board. In this case the position presented a real danger to the individual occupying it, and that is why the person who fills it must be up to the task.

[member="Ghorua the Shark"]

The giant Herglic inclined his head towards Hadleigh, a slight smile parting his lips. He was equal parts relieved and deflated that she wasn't in the mood for small talk. As much as Ghorua enjoyed idle chatter, he wasn't sure he could keep up such a conversation with a businesswoman.

Deals and goods bored him.

He sat in silence for a heartbeat, considering the woman's words. He wasn't new to bodyguard work. He had worked for his family's criminal empire for years before he was thrust into the galaxy. After that, he had worked as a bouncer for various clubs, and as a specialist in Darkwater Security. Added to his years of combat experience and critical thinking through bounty hunting, he felt he was more than prepared to handle the dangers of such a position.

"I understand, Ms. Purkis." Ghorua leaned forward, resting his elbows on his trunk-like thighs. "The galaxy is a dangerous place. I'm sure you've researched me. You know what I do. I've had my fair share of danger, and not a lot of good has come from it." Ghorua narrowed his eyes in thought, his smile fading. "If you'd have me, I'd like to make it less dangerous for you. Then you can do some good."

The Shark straightened from his forward position, brushing his suit absent-mindedly. With some difficulty, he cultivated his charismatic grin again, making him look as if he were just about to tell a joke. "Or some bad, if that tickles your fancy."

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

Hadleigh adjusts her hair, the lengthy light brown strands had a habit of getting in the way of her eyes.

Truth-be-told she had never really looked at things as good or bad, she never had a reason but his words intrigued her. "Well, I am sure there will be some bad of course." She returns with a soft chuckle, and the slightest of smirks. "If I am honest, I am quite impressed with your articulation... Your background checks out, too. You are definitely who you say you are, you have an impressive track record, and you're intelligent too."

The woman pauses as if deliberating, despite the fact she only said good things about him so far. "The position is yours, and you'll begin the day after tomorrow. So prepare yourself tonight because tomorrow you will need to study the instructions manual to better understand your position. Anything you are unable you learn you'll simply pick up as you go." Compliments aside, Hadleigh quickly jumped back onto the 'all business' starship.

Lady Purkis rose, patting down her shirt to straighten out any wrinkles she acquired whilst sat. "If you have any questions, my aide will answer them tonight. If not I should be around tomorrow... Oh, and please do just let me know if there's anything you will need. My protection has been afforded quite the budget apparently," she tried her best to remain modest. "If you really wanted to, you can take advantage of your contract." She jests, but wasn't lying. It was her safety in question and if decided that safety meant a new sofa or a holoviewer then so be it.

Yet such a relationship was built on trust. As much as her life would ultimately be placed in his hands, so would his in hers. After all she'd be the one dragging him into danger--if it did happen...

OOC: I was thinking we can do a fade skip and then get to his first mission with Hadleigh. Of course, feel free to close out of the meeting with any writing you want. Or write about preparations and stuff. I quite enjoy your writing.

Ghorua the Shark nodded respectfully as Hadleigh complimented him, taking them with closed lips. Boasting at this point would counteract her words entirely.

He'd save that for later.

When she said he got the job, Ghorua couldn't stop the sharp smile from emerging from his maw. "Tomorrow. Will do, Miss Purkis. And I'll try to be moderate with my new benefits, but no promises." A mischevious twinkle lit up his dark eyes.

This was the beginning of something new.

---
The next morning, a very different sight greeted the guards than the well-mannered, sharply-dressed Herglic. Instead of a three-piece, in it's place was a bulky, heavy set of stark-white armor. Four small probe droids zipped around the duraplast-clad leviathan, ever watchful. The being itself had scores of different weapons, each one varying in complexity. At his side, a silent, vigilant massiff, tongue lolling at the side of it's mouth.

He had arrived dressed to impress.

Ghorua removed his helmet, grinning. He spoke to one of the guards, a lilt of authority in his tone. "Inform Miss Purkis that her escort has arrived."

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

The guards proved testy at first contact.

Only once the Herglic had revealed who he actually was did they relax and lower their guard. "Right this way... Err, sir." A grizzly man walks over to the main entrance comm device and alerts the estate staff that their new security chief has arrived. "Just sit tight and she'll be out."

He would have to wait outside for a few minutes before finally the door slid open revealing Hadleigh stepping out wearing her dressy white shirt and brown pants, a dark cape adorned heavily to left shoulder and hanging off the back. Typical attire for core worlds nobility, although her clothing certainly had feminine touches the style happened to be more practical than fanciful.

"My my," she sized up the tall mercenary head-to-toe and back again. "You are certainly prepared for anything, aren't you?" An impressed whistle followed, it would appear she found herself in a good mood today. "No time to lose, though, an airspeeder is waiting to take us to the starport." The woman quickly walks down the short steps and moves past him without a second's hesitation. Just outside the courtyard gate was an airspeeder sat idly in wait for the two to arrive.

Once she approached it, the woman hopped over the side and sat herself in the rear on the comfortable seating. Unfortunately the speeder was designed for smaller species in mind, so he would be taking up multiple seats, but the legroom isn't terrible if you sat sideways.

[member="Ghorua the Shark"]

Ghorua the Shark felt a bead of pride as his visage intimidated the guard. At least he knew it was doing as he designed it; to look as imposing as possible. Because of this, he figured most battles ended before they began, with potential attackers rethinking their life choices before tangoing with the Shark.

As Ghorua waited, he found himself wondering about his new employer. The talk with Hadleigh had been just as much of an interview for her as it was for him; he had been gauging her personality, her reactions, her temperament.

He had decided she was good. In a way.

As far as businessmen went, she seemed truthful and open.

Finally, Lady Purkis emerged, dressed in fancy, but purposeful attire. The Shark examined her just as she examined him; with approval. Ghorua appreciated that he wasn't looking after a prissy princess, full of nothing but exuberant hairstyles and dresses, but with something practical in her wardrobe.

Ghorua leaned his helmet on his hip, a coy smile lighting up his face. "Not looking too bad yourself, Miss Purkis, but catcalls are below us, don't you think?" A barely-noticeable wink and a respectful nod followed the Herglic's jesting, to let her know he was joking. Ghorua excelled at breaking many things, one of them just happening to be the ice.

The Shark followed his charge to the airspeeder, creasing his brow in worry. He wasn't entirely confident the vehicle would bear his weight, but with a moment of hesitation, he climbed on-board, taking up a few adjacent seats. As the door was closed, and the airspeeder rocketed into the sky, Ghorua relaxed slightly, looking across to Hadleigh, a question in his eyes.

"So, where are we going on this business trip?"

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

Hadleigh took the wink with a chuckle, "good think you aren't my type or that may be hard." He could take that however he wished, but her tone of voice designated no insults intended.

"No point in sugar-coating it," she starts. The quick launch of the speeder marked by the fact it now surpasses legal speeds meant there proved to be considerable g-forces.

Not to the point that one would be uncomfortable moving around, but the jolt strong enough to be felt. "Vjun. It's a terrible world, and thankfully we won't be landing on it--but on a starship in orbit." Vjun itself was no pretty place like Kuat, the mountainous wasteland constantly bombarded by storms and acidic rainfall. At one point there was life on the mysterious world, but that life had been all but eradicated centuries prior.

It wasn't much later that the speeder already arrived at the starport, only a short ways away from the Purkis estate and much of Kuat's entertainment district. As it slowed to land, Hadleigh grabbed her things. "You're stepping out first," she mustered; clearly as he blocked the way out with his imposing stature.

[member="Ghorua the Shark"]

"Vjun? Isn't that just a big, dead rock?"

Ghorua couldn't hide his surprise if he tried. From what he knew of the planet, it would be the least likely place for a negotiation to take place.

Which was perhaps why this meeting would be taking place above it. He felt a pull in his stomach as gravity worked against him, looking over to his employer to see if she was experiencing a similar sensation.

Finally, they arrived at their destination, and Ghorua listened to Miss Purkis' instructions. He nodded stoically as he planted his helmet on his head, locking it in place. "Don't worry, Mi'lady." Ghorua activated the Voice Disguiser in his helm, the tone of his words dropping a few octaves, to impossible, rumbling levels. "I know what to do."

Ghorua opened his door, letting his probes zip out. The four small balls hovered quickly around, getting a lay of the land, tagging dangerous individuals, and staying mostly out of sight. When Ghorua was content with their evaluation, he stepped out, his massive girth blocking off Hadleigh from the outside. He let Bones out next, the Massiff hopping from the speeder, sniffing the air. After a second of observation, Ghorua turned around, calmly beckoning the woman forward.

"Let's go, shall we?"

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

Hadleigh took to it naturally, showing little sign of discomfort or concern.

"Dead rock or no," she says without further elaboration...

Once the speeder had arrived at its destination, Hadleigh allowed Ghorua to conduct his business as her new security chief. After he gave the 'all clear' she stepped out upon his suggestion, straightening herself and walking towards him before continuing forth. "You don't need be so formal you know. We'll be working together for quite some time, and eventually you'll have to relax around me. So why not start now?"

She could only assume, at least, that his polite speech was professionalism rather than personality. If not... Well, she'd be thoroughly surprised.

Their destination was a readied KDY corvette docked in one of the larger superstructures of the spaceport. Gas hissed from the cooling system exhaust ports which staved off the heat of a massive power reactor. A small tunnel extended from the dock to the ship proved their own means of transport, but it proved large enough for the Herglic to entry with little trouble.

The ship's interiors were designed with many races in mind, although perhaps not of his size it was at least cozy rather than cramped.

"It shouldn't be a long journey. Our hyperdrives are some of the fastest in the galaxy," she couldn't help but boast with a smirk.

[member="Ghorua the Shark"]

"Maybe I will."

Ghorua couldn't stop a sharp bark of laughter from emitting from his helmet as Hadleigh commented on his formality. In all of his jobs as hired muscle, he had never been asked to relax. The truth was he put on the professional mask to intimidate possible enemies, and to impress his client.

Considering the second reason was out of the way, he could afford to scrub off his serious veneer, if only a little.

They began to walk, the Shark's probes buzzing over their heads, the Herglic's helmet running different calculations without him having to lift a finger. This gave him time to do other things. Like trying not to be as professional as he was used to being.

Ghorua plodded to the side of the woman, careful to keep pace with her. "Does that mean catcalls are back on the table?" The Shark chuckled to himself, seemingly relaxing. "What? I'm joking. Probably."

It was difficult to tell whether the giant armor plated being was actually letting down his guard or not, but he was probably relaxing.

Probably.

They continued along their path, and barring any unexpected obstructions, Ghorua and Hadleigh made their way to the ship, which Ghorua was very excited to see.

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

Hadleigh rolled her eyes at his inquiry.

"Don't push your luck. I only said relax, not have fun." She quips in return.

On board things were much different than at her home; mostly. The vessel in question is clinically designed, sleek, and practical. Not a single material served a useless purpose, making it hardly the luxurious vessel that most nobles or executives would ride around the galaxy in. The walls themselves were a matte silver, with some darker streaks here and there.

The doors themselves were a polished alusteel--pleasing to the eye but effective against attack. Less defensive than durasteel, perhaps.

She walked through the corridors past personnel and security, some of them stopped a moment to stare at the Herglic before continuing on once they had realised what they were doing. After all, there was a saying or something... Don't stare stare a shark in the teeth? Maybe. "Almost there," she turned one last corner and a sliding door revealed the comforts of home within the starship. A modest apartment with a kitchenette.

"You can make yourself comfortable on the ship," she turns to him in the doorway. "There's a mess hall towards the bridge, a recreation room next to it, and you're quartered with the security crew. I told them to have it prepared for your arrival... Oh, and it should only take a few days until we arrive. I'll leave the rest up to you." Hadleigh explained, briefly, the ropes of the starship. Leaving the rest for him to find out.

The vessel already had begun its take off procedures, the artificial gravity masking the forces playing against them.

[member="Ghorua the Shark"]

Ghorua took in the ship from the outside, his breath catching, if only slightly. He was an amateur mechanic, he had practically built his personal ship from scraps, but nothing to this level. The sleek, functional design was an art piece, and Ghorua could appreciate it better than most hired security. Careful not to slow his pace, he entered the thing, receiving a similar vibe from the interior.

As Ghorua and Hadleigh walked, he barely noticed the stares. He was used to them by now, after all. The enclosed space made him feel slightly safer, and he removed his helmet with a chunk-hiss, revealing, yet again, his large, smirking face.

"Will do, Miss Purkis." Ghorua bowed his head. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go grab a bite." Ghorua smiled, his dagger-like, opalescent pearly-whites shining in the artificial lighting. He turned slowly, walking confidently to where the mess hall was indicated to him.

He could only hope they had good vegetarian options.

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

She smiled softly and offered him a nod, "help yourself!" Hadleigh pressed a touchpad on the near wall, which shut the door between them.

With the privacy of her personal quarters at hand, she slunk over to the kitchen and proceeded to open a rare bottle of Whyren's Reserve. Pouring the contents into a simple glass, and taking a rather generous sip...

For Ghorua he would find that the mess hall contained an assortment of fresh food, all hand-prepared by the mess chief and his staff. Of course, a large stockpile of crude protein packs sat idly in the back. Thankfully that was used in-case of necessity, but not on standard journeys where only a few days' supplies ever saw their end.

A handful of security guards and crew members sat at round metal tables placed strategically throughout the room: Comfort without wasting space. It had more of a cafe look than a mess hall, in fact, save for the clinical kitchen staffed by even more clinical personnel who--if one took a guess--looked like they've seen better days.

Once the vessel jumped to hyperspace, any danger of attack flew out the window. Due to several technological innovations, the starship could resist interdiction efforts.

That is to say if attacks came from other ships, and not from the inside...

[member="Ghorua the Shark"]

Ghorua sat heavily in the cafeteria, a ways away from the other occupants. He could smell the immediate fear and awe in the room as he had entered, and decided, for now, at least, to distance himself from the rest of security. They probably knew who he was, but they needed time to get used to him.

Until then, he wouldn't push it.

Ghorua dug into a leafy salad, smiling as the taste hit him. Despite his giant muscles and sharp teeth, he preferred vegetable matter to meat. His reasons were his own, of course. Medical conditions and all that.

Just as he finished another bite, Ghorua felt a presence stir behind him. He looked up, seeing a group of forced friendly faces smiling slightly at him. The lead, a woman who looked to be in her late 40's, saluted good-naturedly to the Shark, although Ghorua could almost sense the tension under it.

"So, I take it you're the Chief?" Her words were mediated.

Ghorua didn't bother to smile, his mouth full of salad. He swallowed quickly, turning completely around on the table. Even while sitting, Ghorua was taller than the group of humans. "That's me," he said, adjusting a stray wire in his suit. "Ghorua the Shark. Pleasure to meet all of you. From what I understand, I'll be overseeing the Lady's protection."

"Frey," she stated. "I'm the captain of this unit here. We like to welcome all the new hires, especially the ones with a... shining reputation... such as yours."

The darker undertones were undeniable. They knew he was a bounty hunter. They knew his underworld reputation, as a mindless monster.

They'd made it clear they didn't trust him.

"I see." Ghorua's own tone dropped to a foreboding rumble.

"Well, it seems you're in charge of us for this mission. I hope you know what you're doing."

The group made their way back to their own tables, leaving Ghorua to wonder if that was what it felt like to be picked on in a public school.

- [member="Hadleigh Purkis"] -

"Something's wrong..." The ship's captain offers his X.O. an uneasy look.

The senior officer seemed more concerned by this than the statement itself. "What's wrong, sir? No alarms, warnings, noth--" And that's when it hit. An explosion in the rear of the ship; reactor room. Main power dropped and the emergency reactors quickly took over. However, that wasn't all.

The vessel shakes violently as it is torn from hyperspace, the drive forcefully shutting down to prevent the hull from tearing apart into dust-sized shards.

"Brace!" A third officer shouts above the bridge panic. An announcement goes across the ship: "Battle stations, this is not a drill! We are under attack!" But from what? When the ship dropped everything went quiet. Dim, red lights were all that filled the rooms and halls. Once the shaking had stopped there were no additional explosions and no ship had showed up near the interdiction point.

Which meant whoever forced the drop, it happened from inside the ship. Someone sabotaged the reactor and drive core.

[member="Ghorua the Shark"]

He had just finished his meal, and began to stand when it happened.

Ghorua rocked back and forth heavily, his weight preventing him from being thrown across the mess hall. The same could not be said for the rest of the workers and security. They fell from their seats, food and trays flying comically in the air. Ghorua may have laughed, had he not immediately gone into combat mode. He noticed Frey do the same, recovering quickly from the explosion, and mustering her guards. They locked eyes, and Ghorua nodded, pulling a new toy from his back.

The Kandosii blade felt strange in Ghorua's hands. A hilt, padded by simple leather. Reflective metal, sharper than the wit of the being that held it. And it was massive, specially made by Miss Blonde for his purposes. As he gripped the Force-imbued weapon, he felt a surge of confidence and courage, and breathed in calmly. He was ready.

"Four guards, with me! Frey, take the rest to do a sweep of the ship!" Ghorua rushed out of the cafeteria, the men following his orders, however it may pain them.

Ghorua jogged down through the various doors and hallways, the red accent lights reflecting off of his armor, and his sword. He made it to the KDY Head's door, pounding on it with one fist, accidentally denting the pristine metal. "Purkis, you alright?"

He could only hope his new job hadn't ended before it began.
