DESCRIPTION

“Oops.”

The Daedalus is the new flagship and a joint project of Iron Crown Enterprises and the Saiba Group Think Tank. In essence and putting all technological rambling aside it is a reactor that draws its energy directly from the vacuum of subspace by way of an artificially created pocket rift. A logical advancement from the old experimental Damocles ZPM.

When humanity first tired of the sleeper ships and wished to explore stars at their own leisure they bypassed the laws of nature by the usage of Hyperspace, a separate dimension were the regular laws of nature do not exist. When humanity wished to communicate with each other without having to wait for mail that arrived by ship, they once again bypassed the common limitations instilled upon them by the laws of nature by usage of Subspace, another separate dimension.

It was in this mindset that Saiba Group and ICE devised a way to bypass the limitations of Realspace by drawing zero-point energy from subspace instead.

  • (+/-) Theoretically a source of large quantities of clean energy, practically there are severe limits in place. These limits were installed after initiation protocols caused ships to spontaneously disintegrate. It raises suggestions that systems need to be completely rebuilt and tailored for the reactor to be used efficiently. This also means that if those limitations are somehow removed, say by way of cyberwarfare or treachery? Things can get ugly real fast.

"The capital-scale ZPM-E produces more power than a capital-scale hypermatter reactor, an antimatter reactor, a solar ionization reactor, or most exotic reactors." quoted from the original submission.
"The ZPM-E requires far less fuel than a pure hypermatter reactor of comparable output. Ceteris paribus, and in a perfect world, it would be far cheaper to operate than a hypermatter reactor, an antimatter reactor, a solar ionization reactor, or an exotic reactor. " quoted from the original submission.

[*]
(+/-) The costs of producing it are substantial, however with further acceptance within the Galactic Market and a possible shift in usage these costs can be elevated. It’s a matter of expensive investment now, versus long-term profit.

This does not allow a person to superpower their ships, the Daedalus is scaled in production just as the earlier Damocles-revision which means that you cannot suddenly install capital-grade turbolasers on a little freighter. Adding to that is the fact that using a Daedalus for sub-capital ships might be overkill in terms of costs versus profits for some time to come.

The limitations in question can be seen as a bottleneck regulator, making sure that the energy going from the reactor towards the various system its powering don't overload said system. Systems specifically designed for this kind of reactor would have less problems with the powersurge, but in general one could say that if said regulations would go haywire... things would get ugly fast.

The reactor still is in need of fuel to start up and work, just as the experimental version that is linked in the references. As such it is not a free power device and still needs input to output energy.

So in short, it's like the original but much more expensive and stable. Sabotage of those safety systems could lead to compromise.

Could you expand a little more on what they are and how they may fail?

I'm not a huge fan of technology that is capable of providing near limitless energy, however the work is undeniably there and it has great weaknesses that make it mostly balanced.

I ask that you please be careful in its use and application.

Approved.
