Intent: To make productive use of the Firemane/ARGH mining outpost by providing a lightsabre-resistant battle shield for Eldorai Angelii and select elite troops.
Development Thread: http://starwarsrp.net/topic/31279-setting-up-an-outpost-mining-operation-on-bespin-with-siobhan/ ARGH and Firemane create a joint mining outpost in the lower gasous layers of Bespin. Extraction of cortosis begins.
(( Objective : Perform a mining operation, a raid, an excavation, or steal to obtain cortosis ore from any of the following planets: Apatros, Obredaan, Katanos VII, Duro, Bal’demnic, or Bespin –OR—suffer a devastating defeat at the hands of a Force User Character written by another writer. ))
Manufacturer: Firemane Industries & Technology
Model: Cortosis Battle Shield.
Affiliation: Kaeshana Confederation, Barony of Abregado-Rae
Modularity: None
Production: Limited. This shield is issued to the most proficient Angelii and elite troops of officer rank. Broadening production would require more considerable investment (e.g. dev threads).
Material: Cortosis alloy, durasteel

Description: After Firemane and the ARGH created a joint mining outpost to extract cortosis and agreed to cooperate in future weapons development, both companies found themselves gaining a steady supply of cortosis. Firemane Vice President Siobhan Kerrigan faced the pressing question of what to do with it. Beyond ordering the creation of a life-sized statue of her titian-maned wife Tegaea Alcori in order to glorify her, of course! One of the ideas she came up with was a cortosis battle shield, which was inspired by the Taegis shield the Eldorai's Angelii had used for centuries. The Taegis was a potent defence barrier and even possessed a power field that enabled it to deflect projectiles and energy weapons. However, though it could deflect glancing and even to a limited extent head on blows from lightsabre, it was less effective against them or more modern blasters.

Thus the Seraph Battle Shield was created to serve as a means of protection for select officers against more modern weaponry, being designed as a round shield. Although the mining outpost provided a supply of cortosis, wider production would have still been prohibitively expensive. When it comes to the distribution of the materiel, durasteel is used for the core while the plating is composed of cortosis alloy. This enables the shield to resist lightsabre blows and provides excellent protection against them. However, contact with the shield will not cause a lightsabre to short out or be deactivated, as cortosis alloy rather than ore is being used. Since cortosis has heat and energy resistant properties, the shield is also an effective means of defence against blasterfire, preventing its wielders from getting gunned down unless heavy weapons are utilised. However, unlike the Taegis the Seraph Battle Shield does not have an energy field, meaning that it cannot deflect incoming projectiles.

A drawback of the design is its extreme weight and bulkiness. In comparison to the Taegis the weight was beefed up since there is no power generator in this one. When it comes to the Angelii, for whom the design is primarily intended, this limits its application to all but the strongest warriors, as Eldorai are physically weaker than humans and fatigue more easily. While the shield is very hard to penetrate with anything except heavy weapons and resists lightsabres, a skilled attacker who could get to the side or behind the wielder could strike a blow before the shield-bearer could respond.
Thus it the shield is best used either in a phalanx-like formation or, if during one-on-one combat, in enclosed quarters that restrict flanking manoeuvres. Likewise the shield is not something that can be thrown around through sheer muscle, though someone proficient in telekinesis could use it as a throwing disc. On the other hand the shield is bulky and strong enough for the wielder to utilise it as a weapon to bash an enemy or shove them over so that they can be finished off.

Leather straps are used in the back of the shield to enable the wielder to get a better grip on it during the heat of battle. They can be used to sling the shield over the back of the wielder for carrying when not in a fight. From a tactical perspective it can be used say in combination with a force pike or a Sarzmigar, meaning that the wielder adopts a defensive posture like a pikeman or hoplite from ancient history. A solid phalanx is extremely hard to overcome without heavy weapons, bombardment or flanking. The second method is offensively in combination with the Sarix, a lightsabre or a conventional bladed weapon, meaning that the wielder acts much like a legionnaire or swordsman, presumably covered by troops using ranged weapons or force powers. Likewise this tactic is difficult to overcome and the shield can be used to bash opponents, though the weight of the shield can make its use tiring. Lastly it could be used in combination with a blaster pistol, though given the fact that it was mostly made to combat lightsabre-wielders that would be ill-advised since they would just deflect the shots. It also does not offer any special protection against offensive use of force powers.

All in all the Seraph is a strong defence that gives its users an edge against lightsabre-wielders, but limited by its sheer weight, bulk and manufacturing cost. Given the fact that even with regular mining operations every shield is still precious, only the most experienced would be outfitted with it. It is the complete opposite to the Taegis since it's a good defence against modern weapons, but ironically enough is weaker for defence against the more primitive ones the Eldorai are used to.

Classification: Anti-Lightsabre Combat, Anti-Blaster
Weight: 10kg. This corresponds to the weight of the heaviest shield ever used in Earth history.

Vs. projectile weapons & shrapnel: 6 - cortosis can be chipped away
Vs. melee weapons (except lightsabres): 8
Vs. lightsabres: 9 - excellent protective qualities, resists lightsabre blows. However, lightsabres will not be deactivated and prolonged use of the shield may be tiring due to weight.
Vs. blasters and other modern weapons: 8
Vs. elemental attacks: 7
Other Feature(s): Resistant to lightsabres and blasters. Bottom can be rested on the ground or shield can be strapped over the back of the wielder for carrying.
