SPECIAL FEATURES

Tractor beam projectors for holding ships attempting to “run” the gate so they may be disabled and crew interrogated for intel

Strengths:

Seal the breach: Should one of the gates be destroyed the ground based projectors will fill the hole left by the destroyed station after a short delay to reallocate power and bring additional generators on line.

Come one come all: With a 3000m inner diameters the SEC class shield gate can let nearly any vessel through.

Weaknesses:

Jammed open: If one of the gates are disabled without being destroyed they shield can not be closed, same if one of the gates is taken via boarding action, there is no remote method of closing the gate.

They’re underneath us sir: Due to the intent of keeping hostiles out 95% of the weapons systems are placed on the part of the station that remains outside of the planetary shield, with only a token number of guns inside. If someone were to run the gate scrambling forces from the ground would be the only effective way to stop them.

Description:

Serenno has been a prosperous world, but one does not get that way without many looking on with envy in their eyes and hatred in their hearts. Because of this Serenno has maintained a planetary shield to help protect its people from those whom who's to do harm, currently the system is quite old, although the ground based generators are still more than adequate, however in order for ships to pass through entire sections of shield must be lowered, and the orbital defence platforms are left vulnerable outside of the shield during a siege.

The solution to all these issues was surprisingly simple, the engineers and scientists of CEC figured out how to integrate a shield gate into a pre-existing planetary shield. In order to allow the high volume of traffic normally seen by Serenno to move unimpeded the shield is left down, to allow necessary traffic when the shields are raised ten gates are to be build, each with a diameter of 4000m, and an internal gate diameter of 3000m so that when the planetary shield is raised military vessels, supplies, and VIPs can still be moved without open a massive gap in defences.

The problem of the defence platforms were solved by interacting them into the shield gates, armed and armoured for a siege each gate can hold it’s own long enough for reinforcements from the surface or the fleet to arrive.

There is now a delay mentioned.

However the "Jammed Open" weakness was meant to be the counter to that, the idea was that the trade off for near instant closer was to put in a method the prevented closure.
