Manoeuvrability Rating: 12
Speed Rating: 12
Hyperdrive Class: 2.0

Strengths:
  • Heavy Escort. The Sentinel is a good all-round escort. It is able to deploy attack craft, take on escorts and even support against heavy capital ships.
  • Versatile. Being relatively fast and having a good selection of weapons, the Sentinel can adapt to various situations on the battlefield. It can help strip shields from capital ships with its ion cannons, or punish escorts with its heavy cannons.
  • All Ahead. The layout of the ship allows it to unleash its entire firepower against an enemy to the front, giving it a very heavy punch.
  • Rerouting. The Sentinel is able to draw power from other systems to increase weapon damage so it can get the most out of its firepower.
Weaknesses:
  • Jack Of All Trades. The Sentinel is a versatile ship but it suffers the ‘cruiser problem’ of being too small to take on capital ships head on, and too big to chase down escorts.
  • Broken Dagger. The long, thin shape of the Sentinel gives it good forward firepower, but comes with an inherent design flaw. The superstructure of the ship is vulnerable to breaking in two halfway along, crippling the ship if this were to happen.
  • Fire Arcs. The Sentinel’s long profile makes it great for firing ahead, but it can only concentrate half its guns against one side at a time.
  • Vulnerable. Rerouting power to weapons increases speed and manoeuvrability by +3 (slowing it) and preventing the shields recharging. Obviously, being targeted at this point is bad for the ship.
Description:
Moving from corvettes and frigates, the next class to receive Stahlmann’s attention were cruisers. The Admiral had never put much thought into cruiser strategy, as they had always been something of a paradox. On the one hand they were too slow to catch fast escorts but too weak to combat capital ships. However, there was a niche role they could play to his mind.

Thus the Sentinel was developed. It would carry squadrons in its hanger, but also have heavy weapons. The catch was that it again was not suitable for battleline engagements with capital ships. A second flaw only became apparent after construction; the long nature of the ship left its centre vulnerable to damage which might cause the entire front part of the ship to break off! No remedy could be found though as the ship’s rerouting abilities and firing arcs give it impressive power despite this.

In battle the Sentinel supports capital ships, avoiding fire where possible and either dealing with enemy escorts or adding its heavy guns to its larger cousins in a fleet battle. It carries a crew of over 1200.

The Sentinel is a powerful yet fragile ship, able to dish out the pain to smaller ships and be powerful supports for bigger vessels, but if brought to heel by a capital ship it can be broken.

Development Thread: None
Intent: To create a standard cruiser for the SSC. This ship is able to deploy fighters, but also has a decent kick in combat against escorts. It can also stand up to capital ships for a while at least. It fits well into its role as a support for capital ships, but can last longer than smaller ships in the main battleline.

Alright... Teeeeeeechnically the ship is a little above the standard value for a ship of its size, in terms of capital guns.
But I'm loving the fire arcs as a balancing point. That, and the speed is quite moderate for a ship of its size.
Not to mention that it's a fairly simple and strait forward design. It's not drowning in digital glitter and it's not trying to be the prettiest spaceship at the ball.

So approved, pending secondary.
