SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Shieldcutter
  • Ion Weapon
Strengths:
  • Shieldcutter: The Rifle was designed for the very specific purpose of disrupting the shields of enemy ships. While it would be nearly impossible to build a handheld rifle that can actually deactivate the shields of a capital ship, the Shieldcutter was instead meant to cut small holes into these shields in a localized area. These holes stay open for up to 15 seconds is the average.
Weaknesses:
  • Slow: Reloading the weapon takes time. After every shot the Shieldcutter enters a 2 minute cooldown phase, and trying to remove the Micorpower plant can lead to deadly burns.
  • Oneshot: To allow the Shieldcutter to fullfil its prupose every shot consumes an incredible amount of energy. That means that even an entire miniature power plant only offers enough energy for one shot before it has to be replaced.
  • Malfunctions: The Shieldcutter isn't a perfectly desigend product, but instead a masterpiece of makeshift creation. Due to that the weapon is prone to malfunctions, and often stops working after handful shots have been fired.
DESCRIPTION
Build from countless parts of other weapons, the Shieldcutter is really a sight to see. On first glance it would be hard to guess that the makeshift construct framed by exposed cords and crudly forged parts is anything more then a means of survival, even less a highly effective space combat prototype. Yet as with many of the products of Black Flag, its strangness is a core part of its design philosophy. Made for one intent, and one inten only, there was no time wasted on making the weapon look good, and instead all time flowed into the creation of its technology.

The most obscure part is most certinaly its ammuniton. Instead of normal power packs, the Shieldcutter requiers entire Micropower Plants to power a singel shot, and even that small power plant burns out afterwards. The power of a shot is also the most relevant weakness of the weapon, keeping it to be fired more then once in two minutes. Besides that the energy output of every shot puts the weapon at risk of breaking down, and the wielder would do best to carry something else in the likely case that happens.

How long do these holes last?

[member="Darth Abyss"], technology that breaches is established in canon, but it's difficult to balance in terms of gameplay.

So to better help with this perhaps, let me ask additional question: what is typically done after this makes a breach? Is this to allow people to board the other ship? Or is it more designed to make an area more vulnerable for weapons fire? Or something else?

[member="Gir Quee"] it's a boarding weapon yes, to give others a chance to enter inside a ship through the hull.
Let's do this then.

Change the range to "point-blank" and mention explicitly that the holes last around 10-15 seconds.

This will allow people to get up to the ship, pierce its shield, and then enter, but will prevent some possible abuse for other uses.
