PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Rian presents as composed and self-assured without ever feeling overtly imposing. He keeps his dark hair short and practical, usually a little unkempt in a way that suggests it's the last thing he worries about. His features are clean but worn at the edges, a faint stubble softening an otherwise sharp jawline. There's a quiet confidence in his expression, often settling into a slight, knowing half-smirk that never quite gives away what he's thinking.

He favors functional clothing layered for utility dark undershirts, reinforced fabrics, and a weathered brown coat that's seen more than a few rough landings. The coat itself looks broken in rather than neglected, worn where it matters and maintained where it counts. Beneath it, a cross-shoulder holster sits naturally against his frame, subtle enough to miss unless you know where to look. He moves with an easy, controlled posture, relaxed at a glance, but never careless. There's a sense that he's always aware of his surroundings, even when he appears at ease, like he's already accounted for what might go wrong before anyone else has noticed it.

PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS

Rian is measured, dry, and difficult to read at a glance. He doesn’t waste words, doesn’t posture, and doesn’t chase attention. Where others escalate, he steadies. Where others hesitate, he decides. Years of watching systems fail have left him deeply skeptical of institutions, authority, and anyone claiming to have the bigger picture under control. He doesn’t believe in causes anymore, not openly, but his actions still follow a quiet, consistent line. He’ll walk away from most things. Not everything.

STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES

▲ STRENGTH: Rian remains steady under pressure, capable of making clear decisions in unstable or rapidly changing situations. He neither panics nor overcommits, relying on experience rather than instinct alone.

▲ STRENGTH: A practical and capable pilot, he knows his ship intimately its strengths, its flaws, and how to push both without breaking it. He flies to survive, not impress.

▲ STRENGTH: Strong situational awareness allows him to read people, environments, and intent quickly. Subtle changes rarely go unnoticed.

▼ WEAKNESS: Rian is deeply disillusioned with large systems and institutions, making him reluctant to commit even when it might matter. He avoids causes on principle.

▼ WEAKNESS: He keeps people at a distance. While it protects him from loss, it also limits trust and long-term alliances.

▼ WEAKNESS: His ship, while dependable in his hands, is a patchwork of mismatched systems that require constant maintenance and are prone to failure under prolonged strain.

HISTORY

Rian Varek came up through the outer systems during the final years of the Galactic Alliance, where service was less about glory and more about holding things together long enough for someone else to figure out the rest. He wasn’t exceptional, but he was reliable, trusted with people more than politics, steady where it mattered. He rose just far enough to carry responsibility, not far enough to influence it.

The collapse didn’t come all at once. Systems withdrew, command fractured, and orders stopped making sense long before they stopped coming entirely. Rian’s unit, stationed in a fringe sector, found itself increasingly isolated. Reinforcements slowed, then vanished. Instructions contradicted each other, then ceased.

What broke wasn’t a single battle. It was a promise that never arrived. A settlement was left waiting for evacuation that didn’t come. Rian held as long as he could, got people out where he could, and lost enough to understand that the system he’d trusted wasn’t holding anymore. When the Alliance finally collapsed, he didn’t follow it. He walked.

He drifted for a time, taking work that kept him moving and out of anyone’s chain of command. It was during that stretch that he found the ship, a centuries-old XS light freighter, abandoned on a forgotten world. Not destroyed, not stripped. Just abandoned. Most would’ve taken parts and moved on. He didn’t.

He rebuilt it himself. Not cleanly, not perfectly, just enough to make it fly. Engines that didn’t belong, systems wired together across generations of tech, power routed through solutions that worked because he made them work. What remained was the frame and the bones. Everything else became something new.

Now, Rian operates on the edges of a fractured galaxy, moving cargo, people, and information between powers that don’t trust each other. He avoids wars, avoids banners, and avoids anything that looks like a cause.
