Ria Misrani died during the Battle of Atrisia. Ke'dem Dark Jedi recovered her body shortly thereafter, and Ajira Cardei/Ashin Varanin/Ashin Karrde was able to do what she'd done for others many times before: shove a spirit into a new body.
No clone or disposable bystander was available. Ria wound up as a cat. Ashin swears it was accidental.
Ria's collar is a Sith amulet in the classic sense. Ashin, an experienced alchemist though no specialist, created the collar with the Dark Forge of Aza'zoth, the galaxy's most powerful alchemical furnace. The collar has a single function: to project a burning Force shield around cat-Ria, repelling attacks and unwanted physical contact.
