Intent: To make a sniper rifle
Development Thread: N/A
Manufacturer: Rahvin Industries
Model: RI-SRRG
Affiliation: Rahvin Industries
Modularity: No
Production: Limited
Material: Durasteel and usual production materials
Description:
The SRRG is developed to deliver an immensely powerful sniper rifle capable of firing across huge distances and accelerating slugs to verpine shatter gun round speeds that will easily cut a plastoid armored trooper in half. Thus, the nickname for the weapon is "Misty Pink." It uses magnetism to accelerate the slugs and has several advantages and downsides to this.

  • Silent: like the verpine shatter gun, this weapon is almost entirely silent when firing. However, the bullet will give a sharp report as it breaks the sound barrier. And when it builds up the charge to fire a low hum will emanate from the weapon.
  • Cooldown: It requires a cool down time in between shots in order to allow the capacitors to recharge. The time is short, comparable to working the bolt of a bolt action, but is noticeable nonetheless.
  • Power Cell: it requires a power cell in addition to the magazine. The power cell appears similar to a cartridge and is clipped into the weapon just in front of the ammunition slot on the bottom of the rifle. Ten shots fired from a mile distance will drain the cartridge. Firing over a mile will drain the power cell in just five shots. Thus, in addition to replacing the magazine one must also replace the power cell.
  • Unwieldy: the rifle is large and heavy and requires the operator to use a bipod in order to get any accuracy out of it.
  • Muzzle Velocity: the SRRG has a charge dial that can be turned up to a max of 9,561 fp/s and can be dialed down when overpenetration is a worry. The lowest setting on the dial is 3,000 fp/s.
  • Cavitation: a round fired from the SRRG due to its high velocity is enough to cause an enormous temporary cavity. This is why .50 caliber rifles are capable of blowing limbs off and cutting people in half. At railgun speeds, this effect is amplified and targets generally become "pink mist."
  • Biocheck: the SRRG comes with a biological check on the handgrip and can only be operated by the person to whom it has been calibrated.
Classification: Sniper Rifle
Size: (Handheld, Rifle)

Status: Illegal/Special Forces

Length: 120cm

Weight: 13kg

Ammunition Type: 12.7x99mm, .50 caliber rounds

Ammunition Capacity: 10 round box magazine

Effective Range: 4,828 meters

A couple of questions/issues:

1) I love the mass of this weapon. 13 kilos is quite a lot and displays the bulk. Good job.

2) How is this weapon silent? Yes, while there's no chemical discharge and thus no report, the projectiles being fired are breaking the sound barrier. There would be a noticeable crack when the weapon is fired, as well as debris and dust if the firing area is not spotless.

3) The cooldown period is self-contradictory. Working the bolt takes maybe one or two seconds for a trained rifleman. Is one or two seconds really significant?

4) Please convert the effective range to metric. (Roughly 1600 meters/mile)

1) thanks!
2) That's a good point, but I'm just going off of the wookieepedia entry for verpine shatter guns. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Verpine_shatter_gun
Quote: "The weapon was based on a magnetic field principle, similar to a rail gun. When shot, the weapon would make no sound, "

3) In real life and in RP I think it's fairly significant. Compare this to the Barrett .50, which is semi-automatic. If you're shooting at a LAV, IFV or something of that nature you can put rounds on it quickly. If you miss you just readjust and check with your spotter and fire again. You don't have to do something that will require even more of your time, like pulling the bolt back. A rifleman pulling a bolt back, especially if he is overwatch for a unit, means that hostiles are attacking. Every time he has to work the bolt is another few seconds wasted. Seconds in which the surviving hostiles could be killing his guys.

In RP this is so I, or someone else using this, doesn't just unload ten rounds right after each other at somebody.

I wrote it in to give this weapon another downside, but if you think it's unnecessary then I can just take it out.

4) Done.

2) That may be so, and technically the gun makes no sound, but I'd feel better if you could add in a line about the report of the shot itself would still counteract the quietness of the weapon itself.

3) I think IRL practice, a semi-auto anti-materiel weapon is going to fire at the same speed as a bolt-action weapon. Consider in your example, that the shooter would have to readjust and consult his spotter. That's at least 5 seconds there. It wouldn't be all that different from the delay in cycling the action manually. Not to mention, you'd never be able to repeatedly fire a .50 cal weapon without severe physical detriment. Talk about detached retinas!

But, I understand the RP need of the sentence. Perhaps if you wrote it in such a way: "It requires a cool down time in between shots in order to allow the capacitors to recharge. The time is short, comparable to working the bolt of a bolt action, but is noticeable nonetheless."

Or something to that extent.

4) Finally, I noticed that the production value is set at Unique. This would mean that the rifle is a one-of-a-kind rifle, with no others produced. I'd change it to Limited.

Please tag me in your response. Thanks! :)

2) added in the sentence about a sharp report
3) copy/pasted what you wrote and replaced my original sentence with that
4) Done.
