Gluk, Stock, and Two Smoking Lasers
(Totally optional and unofficial, heavily inspired by Stellaris.)
Each faction and company can define its research capacity as points in three categories:
Major Factions start at 10 Engineering + 10 Physics + 10 Society + 10 additional points allocated within those three categories to reflect specialization or lack thereof. No category is lower than 8.
Minor Factions and companies could easily have more specialization than interplanetary governments, but less raw capacity, so they each start with up to 20 total points allocated between the three categories as they see fit.
How do you gain additional points?

- Engineering (mining and refining, droids, construction, armor, exotic materials, kinetic weapons, explosives, engines, shipbuilding)
- Physics (computers, automation, AI, sensors, reactors, shields, exotic materials, energy weapons, hyperdrives)
- Society (biology, biotech, administration, military organization and logistics, colonization, terraforming, politics, economics)

How do you gain additional points?
- 5 relevant Factory subs (approved in December 2020 or later) = +1 to Engineering or Physics
- 3 relevant Codex subs (approved in December 2020 or later) = +1 to Society
- 1 reasonable thread focused on research, broadly construed = +1 to any category
- Sometimes I make strange ancient subs available to the public, and securing one of these subs = +1 to all three categories
