Once again taking a new take on old technology, Tenloss R&D has produced the Rotary Etheric Rudder - 01 engine designed for use on starfighter frames.
The RER-01 is a series of Etheric Rudders mounted in a pinwheel fashion around a central axis. When spun, the mounted rudders creates a push/pull effect (depending on the mounting area and facing) which pulls or propels the attached machine forwards. Essentially similar to ancient atmospheric propeller engines found in primitive, backwater worlds throughout the galaxy, the RER-01 is the advanced, civilized version of such machines.
The RER-01 are a standard engine fueled by standard fuel cells. Due to the direct transfer of energy, most of the energy is transferred with little waste to the rotary rudders mounted on the engine shaft. This allows the engine to produce energy equal to or mildly greater than most standard starfighter engines on the market. In addition, due to the relatively compact nature of the engine, the compartment the RER-01 is mounted in can often be easily armored and protected from damage with the amount of armor depending on the size of the craft and desired increase or decrease in weight.
The downsides are fairly simple for the RER-01. The engine produces a fair amount of torque due to rotating parts which requires the engine be properly secured to the compartment itself. While easily completed, this often means the compartment itself can become bulky depending on the size of the starfighter and/or desired power/mass ratios of the craft. In addition, the RER-01 features a number of moving parts that can, without maintenance or under extreme stresses, cause the engine to fail and break down. Proper and consistent maintenance is required for the machine, though external damage or extreme stress can easily disable an RER-01 even with excellent maintenance.
Lastly, the RER-01 features fuel cells mounted around the engine in a radial fashion. While this allows the engine to function for long periods of time with relative ease (depending on starfighter size), it can also cause a fire hazard. When punctured, cracked, or otherwise damaged, the fuel cells suffer a chemical reaction that results in an immediate or delayed fire in the engine compartment as the fuel cell combusts. This fire only ends when manually extinguished or the fuel cell burns out, though obviously manually extinguishing such a fire is near impossible when a starfighter equipped with the RER-01 is in use.

- Space and atmospheric capable - Allows use in both atmospheric conditions as well as areas of no atmosphere and/or gravity.
- High energy output - All energy is shunted into one area, rotating the Etheric Rudders, creating a high amount of energy transfer creating speeds equal to or greater than standard starfighter engines (varies from starfighter to starfighter due to weight/mass to power/output ratios)
- Easily armored/protected - Compact and internalized, the engine requires only a rotary shaft connected to the engine internals and an intake/outtake (used for cooling the engine in atmospheric conditions) meaning the engine can be easily protected from most directions with reasonable amounts of armor plating if/when desired.
Weaknesses:
- Bulky - While the engine itself is compact and internalized, the nature of the machine creates a decent amount of torque when active. Because of this, the RER-01 requires secure mounting into the chassis, fuselage, etc of the starship utilizing the machine, meaning that the RER-01 does unfortunately take up a fair amount of room and weight (relative to the starfighter size itself)
- Moving parts - The RER-01, due to the nature of the engine, requires rotating components and a variety of moving parts. Because of this, the machine has a tendency to break down under intense stress or poor maintenance.
