[Private] Peer Review

It had taken awhile but Reggie found the room of his fellow Padawan, Kaili. At least thats what he thought. It took a bit of asking around, mostly making contact with others in the Dragon clan. While the Padawan's joining clans was relatively new, at least for Reggie, many people in the same clan would interact with one another.

Reggie wanted to make a habit of checking up on his fellow Padawans and making sure everyone was alright, and Kaili was someone he hadn't seen for a while. He also wanted to train with the other Padawan, hoping to hone both their skills while also learning more about one another. Reggie always tried to learn more about the people he meets, it was just who he was.

"Welp, no point in just standing in front of the door."

Reggie knocked on the door, three knocks sounding off. Now he waited to see if anyone answered.

Kaili looked up from the gutted training remote currently sitting on his desk, surprised to have heard a knock on his door. To call someone knocking at his door an unusual event would be a misnomer, as that implied it had happened at least once before. It had not, and this had been a somewhat intentional design on his part. Not for any degree of preference on privacy, though that was certainly a benefit, but for the sake of the...frankly impressive pile of stolen or thrown away scraps of tech or equipment. His ‘horde’ dominated no small amount of space in the corner of the room, easily coming up to his waist. Most of it would rightfully be considered junk by the layman, the only truely valuble things being the training saber and remote, but given the sheer volume he figured it was probably unwise to let anyone see it.

Shovingt the remote under the desk quickly he made his way over to the door, cracking only just enough to peek one eye out while keeping the pile out of view. “....Reggie.” He said bluntly, taking a second to recognize the fellow padawan. “...uh...something wrong?” He asked, keeping the door firmly in place for the moment, unsure of what the other young man would be doing here.

Reggie was curious when Kaili opened to door just enough to see outside. It could mean a variety of things but he decided to push the thought aside for now, especially since it wasn't why he was there. The Padawan Moved slightly so the eye peeking out could see him a bit better.

"Hey Kaili! I came by to ask if you wanted to join me in some training. Training alone is fun and all, but nothing beats having a training partner."

What he said was true. having someone to train with was more interesting and gave both people more to learn from. If you train by yourself, you might miss the mistakes you could be making, and that didn't sit well with Reggie. He had a goal, and he wanted to reach it properly. More importantly though:

"I also wanted to check up on you since I haven't seen you in awhile! Hope you don't mind."

The Padawan was also here to check up on a friend, which was something Reggie would have done at some point. His friends and family were the ones he cared for most and made that clear to those who knew him the longest.

“Ahh. Right...training.” Kaili said, relaxing slightly now that his junk horde was more or less safe for the moment. “Sure. I’ve got nothing else pressing at the moment.” He added, opening the door half way and stepping out, locking it behind him. He almost felt bad about intentionally keeping the pile out of Reggie’s view, but that junk was more useful to him than the people he’d nicked it from.

“Also, you dont....need to check up on me.” He said, unclipping his training saber from his belt and checking its charge. An entirely unnecessary act, he knew. The things were so conservative with charge he would have to intentionally try and drain it before there was ever a risk of it being low, but there was a comfort in knowing ones equipment was in working order.

“The rest isn’t exactly ya know....gang territory or anything. I’ve lived in much worse places.” he grunted. Reggies concern was...nice he guessed, though still a somewhat new thing to him. His family back home had rarely expressed worry about him, unless it was something related to his ability to work. And even then half the time the intent behind it were far more selfish than Kaili liked to think about. He shook the line of thought out of his head for the moment. Reggie wasn’t the selfish type as far as he could tell (Which struck him as a little unwise) and frankly, the last thing he wanted to think about was THEM of all people.

“Training field three is normally empty by now.” He said, deciding to get back to the topic at hand. “We’ve got about two hours before some Katarn clan guys use it for remote training....” He paused for a moment. “Normally leave it a mess afterwards to.” He added, grinning to himself and deciding he should stick around after he and Reggie were done. Never hurt to snag a few more unattended goodies left behind by a fellow padawan. “Did you want to continue the shii-cho stuff we learned under Marakos or are we doing free form today?”

seeing his fellow Padawan remove the training lightsaber from his side to check it, Reggie made two notes in his head. One: Kaili was probably in the habit of checking his gear regularly, A good thing for sure, but most wouldn't examine a training lightsaber's charge. Reggie assumed that the young man checked all of his equipment regularly. Two: Kaili didn't have his own lightsaber. This would be something that Reggie would bring up later, believing that he could help his friend obtain his very own lightsaber. Of course, there could be a reason why they didn't have one, which Reggie kept in mind.

Pushing the thoughts on the training lightsaber aside, Kaili's response to Reggie checking up raised some questions. Reggie wouldn't voice his questions since they pertained to his fellow Padawan's private life, which wasn't Reggie's business.

"While you may have lived in a much worse place, it's good to have a friend stop by every now and then. Us Padawan's still have our share of stress here and there!"

When the ample training grounds was brought up by his colleague, Reggie began walking to the area now.

"Perfect. Two hours should be good enough! Let us head over there now. As for what were training excatly, I think Shii-Cho would be best. If that's alright, I mean."

Reggie thought it was a good idea for both of them to sharpen their Shii-Cho skills.

“Shii-cho it is then...” Kaili grunted, stepping onto the training mats and igniting his training saber, the yellow blade humming dully as it burst to life. He took a moment, readjusting his footing carefully (reminding himself of the minor corrections Marakos had made to his stance during the class) until he sat stiffly in the ready position. “Let do a quick spar using the basic strikes and blocks. We can go and critique each other from there.” He said, deciding it was faster to see what glaring issues were in their forms and work backwards from there, neither of them having the martial experience to notice more subtle problems if they moved slowly through the velocities.

“Standard rule set should work.” He grunted, the rules consisting mostly of ‘dont intentionally go for soft targets like eyes’ and the victor being declared by the first participant to score three solid blows. Normally a referee would oversee the exchange and call the points, but Kaili didn’t feel like Reggie was likely to cheat himself. “We can begin when you’re ready...” He grumbled, his hands tightening around the saber hilt, digging the activation switch into his palm with greater intensity than the friendly bout really warranted.

Reggie grabbed a training saber that was in the training area, feeling that it was the appropriate thing to do, even if he could just adjust his own saber. This was the Padawans way of being respectful, even though it wasn't necessary.

as Kaili was talking about the rules of their sparring, Reggie had activated the training saber and did a few practice swings. He soon got into his stance, his focus now entirely on the spar that was about to begin. His usual playful and happy demeanor was replaced with one of determination.

Once Kaili said that he could begin, three seconds passed. After that, Reggie quickly covered the distance between the them and made a fast strike that was directed to Kaili's shoulder, then dropped back a few steps to thrust the saber towards his fellow Padawans chest. Reggie's strikes were quite fast, but the strength behind them weren't so great. The strategists speed and defensive prowess was what he relied on, but someone with more strength than him could easily defeat him with a single strike if he slipped up once.

Reggie’s first attack came quickly, Kaili would give him that, but it was a predictable opener for beginners. Kaili raised his saber, angling it down across the targeted shoulder as his back foot fired in the opposite direction, the two blades hissing dully as the strike was deflected. It lacked the weight Kaili had been expecting from the larger padawan, something he’d have to bring up to him later.

Reggie followed the swing up with a thrust, but it was an over commitment to an assault. “Don’t thrust on follow up...” Kaili grumbled as he shifted his weight to his back foot, sliding off slightly to Reggie’s side, feeling the muted warmth of the training saber as it passed harmlessly near his stomach (perhaps a little closer than he would have liked if he were being honest). Demonstrating what he meant, Kaili stepped forward quickly, shooting a shallow thrust towards Reggie’s left shoulder. It was an easy strike to block, but it was meant to be, Kaili taking another step forward and twisting the saber hilt in his hand to bring a downward shop on Reggie’s right shoulder. Mirroring the other padawan’s first attacks, though reversing their order.

Like Reggie there was more speed to the blows than strength, but Kaili was far more committed to pressing the attack.

Reggie's strikes were deflected by his opponent, which wasn't too much of a surprise to him. Kaili was skilled in his own right and was a fellow Silver. Reggie also expected to be outmatched in any battle, which almost always made sure he didn't get overconfident.

After Reggie's thrust, Kaili mumbled something about not using a thrust on follow up. The Padawan took that in and stored it for later, but now was the time to see if his opponent would now go on the assault after he pivoted to Reggie's side.

Turning slightly, Reggie was able to deflect the shallow thrust that was zoning in on his shoulder. The next attack that came was a downward strike towards his right shoulder, which Reggie was also able to deflect.

It seemed as though Kaili's attacks were based more on speed than strength, except Reggie could tell that his opponent would have the advantage if it came down to just that. Understanding this, Reggie made sure to focus on his best asset for now, which was his defense.

It seemed as though Kaili would press the attack more than Reggie, which was fine with him. He would have to make sure that his opponents attacks didn't overwhelm him, but the commitment that his fellow Padawan had to pressing the attack could prove to be in Reggie's favor if he played his cards right. Reggie would wait for the perfect moment to try and disarm Kaili, putting his practice of Sun Djem to good use. To achieve this, Reggie would have to watch for the perfect moment while also making sure his opponent didn't overwhelm him.

For now, Reggie attempted to strike Kaili again, making a small arcing strikes that was aimed for his left shoulder, and a small strike that was aimed for Kaili's left hand. Grazing of the skin could help weaken his opponents defense, which could slow his opponent down. However, if they weren't using training sabers, Reggie wouldn't attempt to do such a move.

Reggie deflected his strikes fairly well, Kaili’s blade sliding away from the other padawan’s with a faint crackle. Kaili could tell the wheels in Reggie’s head were starting to turn, his posture tightening up and getting a little more sure of itself. What that meant Kaili wasn’t sure, still in the process of feeling out his opponent. But it was enough to know that the warm up for both of them was decidedly over at this point.

Reggie was the first to break the momentary lull in strikes with one of his own, a light swat at Kaili’s left shoulder. Kaili blocked the blow and began to step forward when he noticed his opponent’s blade angled away and then back up, clipping his wrist cleanly. The young padawan hissed as he leaped back, feeling the small welt already beginning to form. Taking a half millisecond to examine the hit, he could see it was definitely shallow but fairly struck none the less.

“Thats one...” Kaili said simply, conceding the point while mentally chiding himself for getting sloppy. He took a deep breath and regripped his saber, looking over Reggie’s stance for a moment while he thought about his next attack. Trading strikes with the other padawan wasn’t likely to get him anywhere quickly, the paddie’s defenses gave him too much of an edge in that department. So...his only real option was to fall back on the old shii-cho rule of ‘be unpredictable’.

Kaili rushed Reggie firing a low and very tellgraphed swing towards his knees, Kaili over extending his forward foot at the start of the strike. While the swing was in mid arc, he flipped the activation switch, the yellow blade shrinking away with a familiar ‘shink’. Bringing his back foot forward Kaili stepped into Reggie’s guard, shoulder checking the taller padawan with as much weight as he could muster as he reactivated his training saber.

He swung again, this time hoping to land a clean blow on Reggie’s knee while he was off balance. While Kaili did feel a little bad about the cheap shot (it was distinctly more cantina brawler tactics than Jedi) he hadn’t exactly promised those wouldn’t be used either. Besides, he had to score atleast one point in this match. If only to maintain appearances.

((sorry its been a couple of days. been trying to get a new job issue settled))

Reggie smiled apologetically after the strike, knowing that his skin may feel a little irritated later. He watched his fellow Padawan as he got back into his stance, trying to think of how he could get passed Kaili's speed. Defense was well and good, but wouldn't help him get two more points.

When Kaili rushed towards him and swung towards him, Reggie prepared to deflect the strike. He didn't expect what came next though. Deactivating the lightsaber was a smart move, taking him off guard. The shoulder check came next. Reggie didn't try to regain his balance, trying to use the momentum to roll back on his feet when he fell. Unfortunately, Kaili's strike hit his knee before he could fall back and roll.

When Reggie came back on his feet, he nodded towards Kaili.

"Good job, I wasn't expecting that. Lets see what other surprises you have up your sleeve."

Reggie got back into his defensive stance, ready for the next advance.

"Your move, friend."
