  • Turret-mounted
  • Automated reloading
  • Standard Targeting Computers (can fire without assistance from the ship's main targeting computers, but is less effective without them)
Description: Rail Guns are an old idea, so perhaps it's befitting that a faction which thrives on old ideas would utilize such technology. Developed on Bastion, the PRG-50 is a new addition to a growing Primeval arsenal. Unlike traditional mass-drivers, the PRG-50 utilizes an electromagnetic generator which transfers its energy to the slug before firing it a minute later. The result is that the slugs are at their optimal penetration velocity the moment it's fired.

To the naked eye these slugs would look like streaks of blueish white light, much like an ion blast, reaching the target within seconds--sometimes less depending on the range. The tightened pocket of energy wrapped around the solid metal slug then expands less than a second after impact, damaging the internal portions of a ship rather greatly but leaving the external hull and armoured plating seem relatively unharmed. Unfortunately, this style of weapon also means that this energy will expand the moment the slug achieves impact with particle shields, dissipating much of the slug's energy. A dissipated slug may still reach its target, even penetrating the particle shield, but in this case it would do little more than put a dent in the ship's hull.

Despite this rather exploitable weakness, the PRG-50 is still a very viable weapon in short numbers and provides capital ships with the ability to shred the inner workings of an enemy vessel if used intelligently.

Min. Gun Crew: 6
Opt. Gun Crew: 18
Gun Count Per: 20

Strengths:
Armour-piercing: More or less its sole purpose, the PRG-50 is able to penetrate through thick armour where its energy then expands and decimates the inside of enemy vessels, and it can do so from a distance.
Hyper-accelerated: Although this makes its rate of fire incredibly slow compared to most mass-drivers, the slug's velocity is maximized by charging it with energy before firing--thus accelerating it rapidly on launch.
Turret-mounted: With the gun itself being mounted on a turret, which is then mounted on a ship, the PRG-50 has excellent firing arcs and can track moving targets whilst it charges its rounds.
Slugthrower: Typical shielding designed to stop turoblasers will not hinder this weapon.

Weaknesses:
Slow RoF: The PRG-50 can only fire once per minute, although it fires two rounds at once, this is incredibly slow.
Big Target: It's very large, about the size of a freighter, and thus is not a difficult target for enemy bombers.
Trumped: Particle shields are especially effective against this particular weapon, rendering it nearly useless.
Slugthrower: Because it fires slugs, it must be fired with particle shields/barriers down making it useless when the ship it's mounted to must defend from mass-driver, HVC, or other similar attacks.
