Approved Tech Pimbrellan League Beam Emplacement

Status
Not open for further replies.
Intent: A beam weapon that does significant hull damage but has no effect against shields.
Development Thread: None
Manufacturer: The Pimbrellan League, a small interplanetary government in the Kathol Outback
Model: Pimbrellan League Beam Emplacement
Affiliation: The Pimbrellan League, various parties within the Kathol Outback
Modularity: Available in heavy and long-range versions, etc. (the standard modifiers).
Production: Mass-produced
Material: Electronics, durasteel housing
Classification: Exotic beam weapon
Size: Ship-mounted
Length: Comparable to a turbolaser
Weight: Comparable to a turbolaser
Ammunition Type: Energy beam
Ammunition Capacity: Functionally infinite (draws power from ship's reactor)
Effective Range: Capital Ship
Rate of Fire: Around 3x slower than a turbolaser
Special Features:
  • No real effect against ray shields (either alone or as a component of deflector shields)
  • Significant effects against hulls/armor
  • Gun count equivalency: comparable to a turbolaser
Strengths:
  • At fairly long intervals, the beam emplacement will project a continuous beam for several seconds, raking across the enemy ship. If there are no ray shields between the emplacement and its target, the beam will deal disproportionate damage (DPS around 5x that of a turbolaser). Depending on armor thickness and substance (and the mood of the opposing writer), the unshielded ship may lose emplacements, suffer long hull breaches, or be pierced side-to-side.
Weaknesses:
  • Long recharge time (around 3x that of a turbolaser).
  • Negligible effect against standard ray shields (DPS around 0.1x that of a turbolaser).
  • Usually worthless until late in the fight, making it a gamble of an armament choice.
Description: In the depths of the Kathol Outback, things get weird. The marauding Qektoth like to run around with weapons that can ignore conventional shielding. Certain locals have found it useful to forego ray shields entirely and armor up. In response, the Pimbrellans -- some distance from the Qektoth, but not from their enemies -- developed weapons that are especially good against unshielded ships. When fighting a ship that lacks shields, a Pimbrellan vessel can rip open its prey like a can opener crossed with a machete.

The downside, of course, is that the exotic Pimbrellan beam technology is virtually worthless against even basic shields. A concentrated capital ship bombardment with these beams could potentially overcome the shields of a light freighter. Against any modern or galactic mainstream vessel, these beams are useless...until the shields go down.

The question, then, is whether a ship commander wants to gamble valuable energy, connection points, and processing power on a weapon that will be useless for most of any given fight. In frustration, many who've purchased these weapons use them as mining implements. They excel at cutting up small asteroids. Against any functional, modern ship, they're terrible.

Primary Source: Heavily inspired by FTL's beam weapons.
