History
Phylus Mon IV grew up on Vinsoth. Like most Chevin he was raised in a place where slavery was the norm. The Mon family had a long history in the slave trade, particularly over the Chev, but Phylus' family was always looking to expand its opportunities. When Phylus grew old enough he eventually gained a captaincy of a cargo freighter and transported slaves from Ryloth to Vinsoth.
One day, the cargo freighter hit a gravitational anomaly and veered off course, making a crash landing on the nearest planet. Phylus woke up in a cave, body bandaged so tight he could not move, a fire flickered in the corner, and over him loomed the shape of an Ithorian in tattered robes. The Ithorian proceeded to inform Phylus that all those on board the freighter died in the crash, except for him, and that he had been in a coma for a month.
Over time, the Ithorian nursed Phylus back to health. They lived inside a cave, surrounded by a small oasis, yet in the middle of a barren desert world long abandoned by most sentients. At first, Phylus despaired, for he thought he would never return to his life of luxury, but the Ithorian had him go on simple walks in the middle of the oasis and asked him questions.
What did Phylus view as the purpose of life? Why did his wealth and luxury make him happy? Questions grew into conversations and Phylus slowly began to realize that he had not been happy on Vinsoth. Even at the most carnal of parties something had always felt missing to him. Hollow.
The Ithorian explained that he had been living for no one but himself and that because of this he was cut off from others and therefore incomplete. The Ithorian asked if he wanted to live for more. Phylus said he did, so the Ithorian went on to explain about the energy that bound together all living things. The Ithorian taught Phylus to reach within and outside himself to find this selfless connection.
This was how Phylus discovered the Force.
Years later, Phylus sat alone by the water's edge. Alone. The Ithorian Jedi had died the previous week. Phylus looked over the oasis and marveled that this small patch of land had been the Ithorian's whole galaxy. And yet he had died content and at peace. Phylus did not think that it was his path to stay here and take care of the oasis, nor did he think the Ithorian would have wanted that.
It was time to return to the galaxy and atone for the life he had led before that fateful crash. Time to bring his teachings into practice, as a Jedi Knight.
