BIOGRAPHY:
To say that the history of the mysterious Sith that is Otium Mentis has holes in it is putting it mildly. Throughout his entire time studying as a Sith no one has ever been able to find out where he came from, who his family was, or even if Otium is his real name. Whenever you ask him, it's always a different story than when you asked him five minutes before, and since no one from his past is alive, there is no way to check his facts. Of course, it doesn't help that he is insane. Of all the stories he ever tells, the circumstances that drove him to almost complete madness is the one thing that is never disputed, mostly because anything other than what he suggests would have probably ended in his death. When Otium first came to the Sith academy on Korriban, he was just a normal kid, about fourteen years old. He was a bookish young man, always more concerned about learning the physics and science behind the Force than actually implementing it. He hated combat, and focused most of his battle training on the supporting of allies. Not surprisingly, this passivity did not go over well with his masters at the Academy. If he hadn't been so strong in the Force, he probably would have died his first year. However, Princi didn't just survive at the Academy, he thrived. His thirst for knowledge was unquenchable, and he spent days at a time in the tombs of the ancient Sith Lords. He wrote paper after paper on his findings, making great additions to the Sith Academy library. However, though he was strong, not even Otium could resist the spirits of the tombs forever. In his second year at the academy, Otium started to hear things in his head. Whispered words, usually complete and utter gibberish, come to him sporadically, sometimes several days in a row, other times with weeks in between. In his third year, the whispers got more intelligible, and more frequent. By his fourth year they were forming complete sentences, and Otium had started changing in other ways as well. He had grown more irritable, the incessant voices in his head causing mood swings and sporadic bouts of pure rage. It was obvious he was losing it, but he refused to stop, despite urgings from fellow acolytes and instructors. The problem was that the voices were like a drug; they made him want more and more and more knowledge. It wasn't just that he wouldn't stop, he couldn't stop. Finally, he took it too far. He overheard a master saying that an ancient Sith spirit was causing problems among acolytes searching his tomb for an ancient war sword. Otium obviously wanted to learn more, so he went to the tomb. The spirit found him when he reached the sword's resting place, and Otium reached for the only thing he had to defend himself: the ancient blade. When he hit the spirit with it, the spirit travelled through the weapon and attacked Otium's mind, trying to assert control. Princi's will to survive and maintain control of his own body was strong enough to resist the spirit, which was that of a minor Sith, not even a lord, but his mind, already tainted with other spirits, was not nearly strong enough to hold back the sudden surge of memories and emotions. The Sith spirit was trapped halfway, stuck in the blade of the ancient sword and Otium's mind was shattered, filling his head with clamoring voices and driving him completely insane. To make matters worse, the strange circumstances cursed the ancient blade, making it so that any time Otium killed someone while holding the blade, the Force energy of the spirit contained within would trap a part of the person's subconscious, like a single memory or a single whispered word, in the sword, adding it to the multitude of voices already jockeying for prominence in Otium's mind, essentially causing him to become even more insane every time he killed someone. Now, though he has extensive knowledge of the Force and has been at the academy for four years, Otium is officially still an acolyte, as he is so unpredictable and so uncontrollably violent that no one has been capable enough, or rather brave enough, to be willing to take him as an apprentice. So he lives at the academy, his knowledge making him too valuable to dispose of and his insanity making him impossible to train or control.
