Orphaning a Rancor

(OOC: This thread is to keep up with the orders coming in for the Beast Hunter's Guild. Oldest orders being handled first.)

A small light freighter pierced the atmosphere of Felucia, soaring high over vast forests of fungi and mushrooms below. It's engines echoed through the quiet sky, causing smaller animals to rush in to hiding, and the large predators of the planet to surface, looking for the source of the noise. The freighter dived closer to the planet's surface, dodging a small bird as it went, and began to lower itself in to a clearing between two massive blue mushrooms. The yellow and black freighter's ramp quickly lowered with a hiss of escaping air, allowing the cluttered inside to be viewed by the various small birds that had perched on the mushrooms, observing the ship. A young human man with two large cybernetic replacements over his eye socket stepped down the ramp, holding a specialized rifle. His optic sensors scanned the area around him as he looked on with a smile. His wookiee companion stepped down behind him, his bowcaster readied in his hands with a quarrel already loaded. They were ready to hunt.

Frederic and Bobawwa stepped down off the ramp, the large wookiee sniffing the air a few times. It was odd here. Replacing the huge trees you'd find on most planets, mushrooms grew to massive proportions all over the odd world. Sounds of animal life were heard all around, shuffling and scuffling in the clumps of lower growing mushrooms, as well as distant rumbles and roars from the largest of the creatures. They were here for the latter. As the two stepped away from the freighter, it's ramp quickly raised to disallow any creatures from stepping in while they were gone. And instantly, they were hunting. Frederic's optical sensors scanned the area aruond him, taking note of every life form that hid among the mushrooms and fungi. Meanwhile, Bobawwa sniffed the air constantly. Wind brought the scents of various creatures, some close, some far away. In the distance he could smell meat, probably carrion, kill from one of the predators of the planet. They walked on between the towering mushrooms of the planet carefully, both of them on the lookout. Hunting int eh wilderness could be incredibly dangerous, they weren't the only predators out here. If they were careful, they'd be the ones getting killed tonight.

Creatures leaped from branch to branch of the tall mushrooms above them as the duo walked on through the jungles of the planet. They'd gotten to a wetter biome, where the mud stuck to the bottom of Frederic's shoes, and made the fur around Bobawwa's paws thick with dirt. Insect noises were all around them, inte h trees and grasses, signaling that there wasn't anything big nearby. Everything went quiet when a dangerous predator was in the area. Bobawwa kept his head held high, constnatly sniffing the air around them. For all either of them knew, there could be something hidden in the shadows. From what the starmaps said, this planet was as dangerous as the Shadowlands where Frederic found his friend. And that wasn't a place they wanted to vacation in. So, they kept on high alert. Who knows what could happen?

The swamps were getting deeper as they walked on, now, ankle deep in most places for Frederic. Bobawwa constnatly complained as they trudged on, grumbling and growling under his breath as he had to pull his feet out of the mud with every step. But they kept dilligent. It could take hours, days, weeks, to find what they were looking for. For all they know, there wasn't one within miles of where they landed. But between the packs on both of their backs they had enough food to last them a week, and enough water for a few days. Even with a Wookiee. So they trudged on, staying observent of the world around them. A twig snapped and Bobawwa stared off in to the brush, sniffing several times. Another twig snapped. Frederic turned his rifle to the brush, only to be greeted by a rather large spider- which scurried away when he saw him. Not what they were looking for. Dangerous, but not what they were here for. They continued on.

The swamps had given away to a large river, and they trudged their way to the bank of it, making their way through mushrooms that grew so thick together they had to climb over them at some points. Which was easy for Frederic, they could eaisly take his weight. Bobawwa on the other hand was grumbling more then ever. After falling through the mushrooms once again, he barked something at his friend in shiirywook, obviously dreading this entire hunting trip. "Calm down, calm down. It's better then the shadowlands, isin't it? At least here we aren't being ambushed every few minutes." As if on queue, something roared off in the distance, and the Wookiee began to sniff the air rapidly. He barked in shiirywook, and gestured his bowcaster in the direction of the roar. They'd found what they were looking for. Frederic's optical sensors scanned teh horizon in teh direction of the roar, but the dense foliage wouldn't let him see it. So they had to continue on. As they walked, another roar would sound every few seconds, getting loduer and angrier with each occurance.

Soon, they came across what was making the noise. Two bull rancors, a male and a female, were fighting viciously in a huge clearing of purple mushrooms. Frederic raised his rifle towards the largest one, but Bobawwa groaned lowly in shiirywook, signaling him to stop. He lowered his rifle, with a scowl, but nontheless watched the two monsters fight. The larger one, the male, had massive tusks which he kept stabbing towards the female, trying to push her back. The female's face was drenched with blood. She was standing between a dead animal of some sort, a massive one, that the male was trying to get at. She was defending her catch brutally, whacking the male back every time he tried to get close. These were what they needed alright, but there wasn't a juvenile. They needed a juvenile. So they waited. The male burst forwards, and pushed the female aside, who responded by roaring loudly, and slashing her long clawss across the male's chest. The male responded in turn, lunging forwards and jutting his tusks in to the female's shoulder, who took the opening to sink her large teeth in to the male's neck. He squirmed violently in her grasp, but she held on with her front limbs, keeping her teeth sunk in his throat. The male pulled back, but the female didn't let go, which only caused a large chunk of the male's neck to be ripped off. He stumbled backawrds, blood leeking from his maw, and eventually fell to the ground. The female won.

The two hunters stayed int he cover of the larger mushrooms on the edge of the clearing, and watched, as the female sniffed her new kill several times to make sure he was dead. After confirming that he was, she let out a low growl in the direction of the other side of the clearing. To their suprise, a very young bull rancor walked out of the clearing, making low whining sounds to his mother. They couldn't believe their luck. The two hunters stayed very still, watching the mother and her child for a few moments as they began to eat away at the male who had attacked the mother just minutes ago. Frederic slowly raised his rifle, and shifted his wait, only to accidently step on a small stick. The mother rancor's head abruptly shot up, and she stared in the direction where the two hunters were standing. Both stayed absaloutely still, hoping she'd go back to eating. She did the exact oppisite. She charged.

Both hunters dived out of the way as the mother bull rancor ripped through the huge mushrooms, causing them to fall in pieces. The mother rancor turned first to Bobawwa, letting out a threatening roar and charging again. He was able to dive aside, but dropped his bowcaster in the process, leaving it under the raging beast. Frederic yelled at the top of his lungs, waving his arms around, triyng to get the attention off hof his companion. It worked all to well. The mother rancor spun around, and raced at him next, who raised his rifle to try and get a good shot at her as she came. He failed. Before he could even pull the trigger, the mother was on him, and swat him aside in to a nearby mushroom. He slumped down the side of teh mushroom, winded but not badly injured. This save bobawwa the iooppurtunity to aim his bowcaster from where he dived, and fire a charged quarrel in to the side of the rancor. She let out a deafening roar, and turned to Bobawwa with anger in her eyes. He didn't have time to load another quarrel. He dropped the bowcaster, and snatched a thermal detonator off his bandoleir as she ran at him. At the last moemnt, he flung it forwards in to her gaping maw, and dived to the side. The wookiee got clipped by her massive arm as he dove, throwing him across in to the clearing, but a second later a deafening explosion filled the clearing. While bobawwa lay unconcious, Frederic looked up in time to see a headless body of the mother rancor slowly fall to the ground.

Dazed, Frederic turned his gaze back to teh clearing where his unconcious friend lie, only to see the infant rancor coming his way. The infant turned quickly, and stood next to his mother, sniffing her body several times. After realizing she was dead, he raised his mouth to the air, and let out a heartbreaking wail that echoed through the forest. In a split second, though, the Rancor's manner changed. His heartbreak turned to anger. And he raced at Frederic. Frederic's eyes widened as the eight foot tall or so infant ran at him, teeth bared, and arms outreached to make his kill. He only had enough time to snatch his rifle off the ground, and bash the butt off the rancor's face like a baseball bat as he came. This caused the rancor to stumble aside, which allowed the injured hunter to raise the weapon in an aim, and fire. A specialized dart fired from the muzzle of the gun, digging itself in to the shoulder of the infant. The rancor took two steps forwards, dizzily, before collapsing to the ground. Frederic dropped the rifle, and stared ahead at the rancor, panting heavily. At least the Chiru worked.

Once he was able to walk, Frederic got to his feet, and made his way over to Bobawwa; who was already stirring. The wookiee groaned to himself while Frederic looked over his injuries. Nothing major, just a shallow cut along his abdomen where the rancor's claw scraped him. He'd be fine. Afterwards the hunter turned towards the infant rancor... Thankfully, he didn't have to drag the thing back through the swamps to his ship. The human pressed a button on his comlink, signaling the astrodroid within his yellow and black freighter to drive over to his location.

A few minutes later, Bobawwa was fully concious, and the freighter was landing slowly in the clearing. Half an hour after that, they loaded the tranqulized young rancor in to the cargo bay, and began to get ready to take off. This was quite the hunt... They just wanted to leave before something showed up to eat the two fullgrown dead bull rancors they'd left in the clearing. The last thing they needed was to encounter something big enough to eat those things...
