Born Samael Matthews, the man that would become Oran Ren can hardly remember his earliest days. His parents were mercenaries, traveling across the galaxy wherever the contracts would take them. Samael saw much of this galaxy back then, though he can hardly recall it. Often left to fend for himself, Samael had few friends and the few he did were always left behind when his family moved on. His parents began his earliest military education back during these days, skills that would come in good use in the coming decade of his life.
His family eventually became contracted to the First Order during the early days of their war with the Galactic Alliance. His parents fought on the frontlines of the conflict, while he was drafted into the logistical corp. It was during a routine resupply mission to a border post that Samael met Bram Ren. A relatively minor member of the Knights of Ren, Bram was still held in a certain regard among the organization. He sensed Samael's Force Sensitivity, and as the First Order were in need of every available asset, Samael was given the choice to enter the Knights of Ren as a initiate. Eager for the chance to make a name for himself beyond that of a mercenary child, and wishing to find stability, he eagerly accepted.
Bram began Samael's education, and Samael would follow the warrior across the ever expanding warfront. He learned many things from Bram, and coupled with his prior military training from his parents, he proved to be an accomplished student. In the final days of the war, Bram and Samael were dispatched towards the Core Worlds along with a First Order strike force, intent to assault a Galactic Alliance bastion. The assault proved a disaster, as the Galactic Alliance had been made aware of the First Order advance. Hundreds of First Order soldiers were killed in the opening hour of the battle, and Samael fought side by side with Bram against his first Jedi foe.
His first battle against the Jedi was also his masters last, as while the First Order forces were making their retreat, Bram engaged the Jedi Master in charge of the bastion. Samael watched Bram fight, and lose, to the Jedi Master. Cut down without remorse, Samael was only able to save his masters lightsaber. Samael returned to First Order space, and still grieving for his masters death, threw himself fully into the final battles of the war. Samael Matthews fought against the Galactic Alliance of old and its Jedi guardians, but in the end, Oran Ren emerged.
Following the fall of the First Order, Oran went into seclusion on Demonsgate, contemplating the deeper aspects of the Force among the ruins on that world. When the Knights of Ren again gathered, he did not answer the call. When the Knights of Ren fought against the Jedi, the Sith and all their myriad foes, he did not answer the call. He had forgone the organization, seeing a failing within their core that had led to not just the fall of his master, but of the larger organization itself. In recent times however, he has emerged from seclusion. The Brotherhood of the Maw, aligned with the remnants of the Knights of Ren, had drawn Oran's interest, and he has since sought them out and rejoined their ranks, eager to carry out the mission he has set himself to accomplish.
