[ Most in your position would be decomissioned. However, I managed to to leverage your skillset. You have been reassigned and a new identity to be set in place.
You leave for Corellia in twenty-four hours. The details of your new persona is in that datachip. ]

Kaile was trembling so hard, that she had to clasp her hands together. She felt sick. Nauseous. The room seemed to spin, and her stomach would clench and twist and turn. The grip of her fingers grew so tight, her knuckles turned white. Tiny, bloody half crescents would break the skin, her nails digging into her flesh.

Stars, no…

Everything made sense now -- and while it hadn’t originally begun with the intention of using Kurt’s courier life as Kaile’s cover, the Alliance had acknowledged that it would be the best one under the circumstances. Kurt Meyer worked for a Galactic courier company. His routes would take him to not only neutral, but unfriendly territories, allowing access for Kaile to do her missions if required. His psych review and military service record indicated that while he had been court martialed for fraternization, his career had been impeccable and he was not considered to be a risk for their agent or for their purposes.

It made sense. It made perfect sense why they would have Kaile stay with Kurt. But for Kaile.. for Kaile it didn’t make it right.

The Lorrdian was torn, and felt all the more worse in the end. It only reinforced her decision. There was no way she could have stayed behind knowing all this.

Sitting on her cot, Kaile's shaking hands came up to rub her face. Beside her on the table were the scattered profiles and data tables she'll have to memories for her new identity.

Feth.

Kaile never felt so alone.

Kurt floated through space again, or rather, The Messa did.

This time it was of Kurt's choice though, it wasn't cause the hyperdrive had failed or because some horrid explosion, it was simply because Kurt was taking the time to fix everything. He knew that he had already lost Kaile, or rather, that he had lost the initial jump that he would have had on her had he rushed to Sullust. So now he had to be smart about what he did, he had to be intelligent and actually think about where she would go and what she would do.

Sullust was the obvious location of course, though he figured she would be long gone by now. It was better to fix The Messa and get everything moving once again. The Hyperdrive was almost completely shot through, but The Alliance had been kind enough to leave a full repair kit behind.

That had been a present he hadn't expected.

Most of the parts for the repair were right there, however, and the things that were missing he managed to salvage from the backup drive. That in it of itself was a rather dangerous gambit, but he figured as long as he didn't overload the thing a second time things would actually work out well, or he hoped so at least. If this one did explode, he was done for anyway. "Soon, Kaile. Just a little bit longer."

He promised her, he promised himself.

Kaile didn't know how much time passed. Everything was just a blur. The tick tock of the chronowatch was a constant white noise, a reminder that she was on a timeline. Her hands fell from her face. Nothing but a dim cerulean glow illuminated her tiny room. This had been her temporary quarters whenever she stopped by Sullust. It was generic in set up; a cot, a refresher, a table and a small entertainment center. Honestly, it served littler more than a typical motel room.

It suited her well.

Her life had been a series of constant moves and new locations. Moving from place to place wasn't new to her. A new identity. A new role. A new life. A new purpose. Every new mission brought her a whole new 'verse of people to meet and befriend; to collect information from. A short, sad laugh came from her then. It was a bark of dry, empty humor.

"Everything was a lie..."

A bit harsh, but it was a new world for the Lorrdian. Even if she didn't mean it. Even if she didn't meant to bring harm to Kurt or to fool him. It was a realization. An awareness. Her role in Omega Pyre and with the Aliance meant one thing, that she wouldn't be able to continue any friendships or really progress any relationships beyond the ones she was assigned to. It only really dawned on her now how isolated she truly was, despite how many people or how sociable she'd be.

Had she really been this blind all along? Had it taken Kurt for her to finally realize that?

It was a day to remember. Certainly a line of demarcation. One where Kaileann's innocence and wide eyed wonder died a little that day.

The thing would run again, eventually.

Most of the hypderdrive had been completely burned out during the explosion, the external casing was completely gone and the internals...well they were a mess. He supposed that was to be expected, especially given the state of the rest of The Messa. He Still hadn't cleaned everything up, anything up for that matter. Most of the ship was still an absolute mess, bits of metal and trash strewn about, a few chunks of what appeared to be the old hyperdrive simply laying about.

The Courier hadn't the mind for cleaning.

At least right now.

His main objective was to get the hyperdrive working again, making it at least as fast as the the one that the Varactyl-Class came with. That wasn't anything to scoff at, though it wasn't anywhere near what Kurt would have liked it to be. Still, it was better than the backup, and would at least allow him to get to Sullust inside of the next two days. Of course, he expected that he would need to fly a bit under the radar when he got there, but he would solve that issue when he got there.

"You better be safe." Kurt said to himself, or rather, to Kaile somewhere out in the galaxy. His hand dug deep into the the broken hyperdrive, fumbling with wires and replacing them where he thought it was best they would go. Eventually, the device sprang back to life. A subtle, soft whir came to The Messa, a blue glow coming along with it.

Her name was Neia Karr.

Corellian. Born on Talus. She was the third daughter out of five children, all who perished during the event that broke Corellia in two. There were no other living relatives.

Dark brown hair. Brown eyes. Corellian accent. There were various voice samples to choose from. Holovideos of her mannerisms. It was like slipping on a second skin. Simple really. It always had been. For Kaile, turning into someone new had been a game. Something fun. It had been a way to play pretend and simply enjoy.

There was a somberness to her this time around.

The slight drip of water would resonate in the small refresher. The scent of ammonia lingered. Steam condensed against the mirror. One of the luxuries at being based on Sullust was the access to natural springs. Water refreshers were available for use, one thing that Kaile took advantage of. An hour of standing under the stream of steady water managed to clear away the cobwebs, wash away the tears.

Anyone looking at her now would see the kilo or two she had lost. Her face was a little more angular, her eyes a bit hollow.

She was numb.

A hand went streaking across the mirror, wiping away the condensation. There, wide brown eyes stared back at the woman. Dark brown hair. Brown eyes. Corellian accent.

On his way he would go. As soon as the Hyperdrive was back up and running Kurt jumped from his position on the floor, pain lanced through his body, his ribs protesting and his leg screaming out as he bounded onto the deck. There was a slight shake of his head and the gnashing of his teeth as he moved, deciding that walking it off was the best thing to do if he ever actually wanted to make it to Sullust. The pain subsided, pushed away by sheer willpower and grit.

"Okay okay." Kurt took a deep breath, wandering over to the ladder and grabbing onto the first rung. "Baby steps."

He told himself, not wanting to move too fast. The last time he had jumped to hyperspace he had passed out, this time he would have to make sure not to do it again. The Alliance might have been a new entity, but Sullust was well defended. If a ship with no ID tags suddenly jumped in above orbit and gave no answer to hails...well it wasn't very likely that they would keep him alive for long. The Alliance was at war after all, and war was no places for taking chances.

Quickly the Courier climbed his way up to the cockpit, taking each rung with slow and patient movements.

Eventually he found himself once again in his pilots chair. The soft and subtle thrum of The Messa's engines purred in his ears, an easy noise that calmed him. He smiled slightly, looking over the controls and the pod-racing toys that had been arranged along the top of them. His eyes shut for a second, fingers lacing over the hyperspace control. He had already entered the coordinates for Sullust, now he just had to pull the lever and see.

The rest of the day had been spent immersing herself on Neia Karr. Who she was. Likes. Dislikes. Quirks. Everything and anything. The bulk of her time had been spent in front of the mirror. She had to perfect the subtle nuances. Had to BE Neia. Kalie had no knowledge on what was the real status of the real Neia, but she knew that she would have to do her best in regards to fulfilling the role.

Truth be told, it was a way for her to keep Kurt from her mind. From the past. The more that Retii's words sank it's claws into her mind. It made her feel all the worse. It made her skin crawl.

It made her feel as if everything she'd honestly done with Kurt had been manipulated, even if she never intended it to be. Even now, if Kurt knew the full truth, how could he even look at her the same? He had always been so forthright, and learning who she really was... if he knew it all?

No... it was better this way. That way he wouldn't be in danger. His family wouldn't be. Jonas had been so sweet and caring and... the knot in her throat grew, and she took a shuddering breath. Brown eyes fell to look at her chrono watch. I need to pack.

She would be leaving for Corellia soon enough.

The trip to Sullust would take time still, he had after all made a rather mad dash towards Sullust.

The two planets weren't exactly in conflicting directions, but it certainly was a slight detour.

The good news was that this way he could make a nice little run down a hyperlane, meaning he would save time and probably get to Sullust by the end of day number two. Of course, that also left him with more than a little bit of time on his hands, something that Kurt was neither looking forward to, nor really wanted. His thoughts had been all about finding Kaile, every moment, every waking hour, every minute, all it had been was about finding Kaile. He had not given himself time to rest, had not given himself time to actually think, and that was what he was afraid of.

His thoughts would catch up to him.

It was inevitable of course, one couldn't outrun their own mind, but there was still fear in it, still terror that one couldn't stop themselves from thinking of the worst. He didn't blame Kaile, not at all, but he did blame himself. He blamed himself for reacting the way that he did, for driving her away, for destroying his own hyperdrive and nearly killing himself within his recklessness. There was anger there, sharp and biting. Kurt tried to push it away, yet it seemed to somehow creep back.

A frown pulled at his lips, his head leaning back within the pilots chair. The Courier should have gone to bed in that moment, should have trudged himself to his room and laid down, but he didn't want to. There was a haunting there, an afterthought. Something he did not want to think about, something he did not want to approach. So instead he pulled his legs up to his chair, his eyes closing as he went to sleep.

ID chip. Check. Datafile. Check.

It was just a matter of blending in, being someone new. Prior to this, Kaile simply had fun pretending that it was all a big game. Pretending to be someone was as easy as slipping on a new pair of pants. That was the luxury of being a Lorrdian. Mimicry came easy.

Maybe a little too easy.

Kaile had been supplied with a fresh set of clothing. Spacer clothes really. A beige button up blouse with a tan jacket that went over it. The leather was soft and pliant, really good quality nerfhide. Tan breeches, black calf high boots. Everything she wore screamed Corellian born and bred, but nothing completed the look than the way Kaile seemed to ooze cocky confidence.

It was all an act.

It was all she could do to keep herself sane. To not break down and cry again. If she focused on this single thing. This precious thing, then she wouldn't have to worry about Kurt and his family. Retii had promised her that she didn't need to worry about what would happen to them. That Kurt and his family would be left be. It was the only reason why she agreed to continue with this new assignment.

She had to make sure that Kurt and his parents would be okay.

The crowd was rather thick today, well over the hundreds at the Sullust space port. Kaile would take public transportation first to Yag"Dhul and then to the Corellian Sector.

From there, she would land on Talus.

And go to a farm of all places.

He slept for he didn't know how long, but it was a good sleep oddly enough. It reminded him of his time spent in the cockpit during his days in The Republic, when they had needed to stay at alert status for battle at any moment. There had been a lot of sleeping in starfighter cockpits back then, quite a bit of squeezed compartments and tiny spaces. Kurt hadn't minded it really, sleep had generally always come rather easy to him no matter where he was.

The cockpit had just been another tiny space to sleep in. He shifted slightly as he awoke, his arms reaching above himself and to the side. He let out a loud yawn, his eyes flickering open to catch the sight of hyperspace still dancing across his viewport. He let out a sigh, wanting to curse himself for screwing up his faster hyperdrive.

His eyes flickered to the chrono. "Two hours?"

That was still some time to be alone, still too much time to be alone. His teeth sunk into his lower lip, eyes shifting slowly across the controls. There was something that he could do here, something to keep his mind occupied. Kurt didn't want to think about Kaile, didn't want to think about what had happened. He wanted to keep going, to keep pushing, that was all that mattered, that he kept moving forward. If he could do that, if he could keep moving his mind forward, then he could get her back.

Get her back before anything bad happened.

Security this time around hadn’t been difficult.

Bobo was safely stored in his nutrient tube. A thought came to her then that she should consider making him a new harness. Something that she could use that would be lightweight and protect him as well. Keeping her mind busy was all she could do right now. Had to. Otherwise all she would remember was the brush of Kurt’s fingers through her hair, the banter as he breathed a path down over her belly, recall the feel of him in his entirety. Yet most of all, how he would hold her while they watched a holoflick. It wasn’t to say the sex wasn’t great. It was. It was amazing. Kurt was an attentive lover, but it was his companionship that Kaile missed the most.

He had always been there for her when insomnia made it nearly impossible to sleep. He had been there to tend to her wounds when she’d been hurt. He had been there to ensure she was okay. And she had done the same to him. Cooked him meals, made sure he was eating well. Worked with him to upgrade the Messa to the beauty it was today.

The Messa had come to them as a blank canvas. What they had created together had made it more than a mere ship.

It was a home.

Their home.

Brown eyes would flick up to peer outside the view-port.

Once.

There wasn't much to do really, except for...cleaning.

Kurt had never liked cleaning.

As a kid it had been one of the few things he had outright refused to do at home, of course his mother had properly seen to that being corrected. He shifted slightly, his legs dropping down from the chair and onto the floor. A sigh racked his body. He knew what he had to do, or rather, what he should do. It was the right thing, really, and it would make Kaile happy when she did finally return to their home. His eyes closed for a moment more, and slowly Kurt pushed himself out of the chair.

He would clean.

Kurt didn't like the prospect of that, and not because of the usual reasons. His ribs hurt quite a bit and...well his leg wasn't doing that well either. Getting down the ladder would be difficult enough, cleaning? Yeah that was going to be near impossible. Yet he had two hours to spare, two hours with nothing to do, nothing to think about except for how he messed up. His head shook slightly, his eyes setting down onto the controls before he slowly turned and walked towards the ladder.

"Might as well." He said, bracing for the pain.

[All passengers traveling to the Corellian System on flight Aurek-Nine-Xesh, final boarding call. ]

The drone of the overhead speakers would float over Kaile's head. Already the transport was filling in with more passengers. Some were families. Others were couples. Those who has more credits traveled at the upper classes; just enough to have upgraded accommodations but not enough to use their own ship or a private transport.

Lowering her eyes, Kaile went rumaging through her pack. She caught sight of Bobo, sleeping in his tube. This assignment would mean she couldn't have him out in public. He'd have to stay in his tube out of sight. The thought made her realise that perhaps she should create him s new harness.

A small journal, bound by pliant leather, was pulled from her bag. In it there were several sketches and designs. Some for odd trinkets. Others for larger pieces of tech. As she opened it, a flat piece of napkin fluttered from between the sheets of filmsi and onto her lap.

Frowning, Kaile plucked it with gentle fingers. Smoothing it open, she gave a sharp intake of breath.

It was the barebones sketch of the idea she had for the hyperdrive. A way to provide a secondary means of protection were it to blow on the Messa. It was the difference between being blown up or simply being adrift in space.

Fingers pressed tightly against the thin sheet of paper and her eyes took on a downcast glow.

I wonder how he's doing right now?

Kurt began to clean everything, really everything. The entire process took a lot of effort, and in truth probably more pain then it was worth, but he couldn't help it. The Courier had to do something to keep his mind occupied, had to do something in order to keep everything moving. He felt as though stopping would cause him to go mad, as if he suddenly took a break then everything that he had been trying to avoid would come crashing down onto him.

It wasn't something he needed.

Wasn't something he wanted.

Kaile was gone, he knew that, but he would get her back, he would, stopping to think about the implications of not...stopping to think about what he would have to do if he was alone again? It was a prospect that Kurt didn't look forward to, and idea that terrified him. He had never realized before just how alone he had been, just how on the brink of misery everything had come. His life looked like a dream to some, flying around the galaxy, sleeping with women, radiating confidence.

But it was a lonely existence.

No one would have thought that of him, perhaps even Kaile had never thought of it that way, but Kurt knew in the deepest recessed of his mind that he had been on the edge. He had been alone and by himself for so long, living among the much and trash to the point where things...well they had teetered. The Courier frowned slightly, shaking his head and pushing the brook across the floor to gather some more of the junk in a great big pile.

The idea came to her when she was on Sullust a month back. Kurt had dropped her off, having to make a delivery to SoroSub, which made it a great chance to catch up at headquarters. After getting all she needed, she had gone to a local cantina down by the spaceport to wait for Kurt’s return.

It was there that she had been thinking about what they could do about the hyperdrive. Their most recent tweaks and after-market upgrades gave it amazing speed; but it also likely increased the chance of them going boom like a Life Day firework. With both of them constantly monitoring it, and keeping up to date with the maintenance, that would lessen, but if Kurt were to ever push the Messa beyond the red…

Well things were not going to be pretty.

A shuddering breath left her, and her lids fell to the tech schematic sketch. It wasn’t too crazy of an idea. The thought was to take a salvaged shield and install it to activate as a security measure around the hyperdrive when it would reach a specific warning point. That would at least keep the power of the blast inside the shield, and not spread debris everywhere, potentially killing Kurt and Kaile. It would send back all that potential force and shred the hyperdrive, but it was better than dying...

Her fingers tightened again.

The thought of anything happening to Kurt brought a sudden sinking sensation to her belly. No, she couldn't think of that. I can't. Maybe... Kaile swallowed hard, thinking.

Maybe I can still make it. I can gather up the parts, work on it.... and I can send it to him. He wouldn't even know who it came from. Just have it delivered to Sif Headquarters for him to pick up his post.

He can easily install it on the Messa. And he would be safe.

Eventually it all came together.

One great big pile of junk.

Kurt half considered simply dumping it all out the airlock and being done with it, but he knew that Kaile wouldn't like that. Despite their comparatively short time together Kaile had grown really quite fond of nearly everything within The Messa. She had decorated most of the ship herself, bought and made things for decoration, even painted some things on the walls. The Ship was as much hers as it was his, and in truth, even though his name was on the lease, Kurt had never really minded that.

It had made the ship feel like home, made it feel like somewhere that he could actually live forever instead of just coast along in. The old VCX-820 had never been a home, had never felt like it, more like something to get from A to B. That was probably his own fault, he had never really tried to make it any different aside from a workbench and a few models. The Messa though, The Messa was different. This was his home, throwing things out, things that Kaile had bought and made felt entirely wrong. Slowly The Courier dropped from his standing position, sitting down in front of the pile of junk with his legs stretched out and his back against the wall.

His eyes closed for a moment before slowly folding open.

Kurt let out a sigh, then slowly began to pick through the pile of junk.

"Okay, so that makes it..." Kaile would nibble on her lower lip, the slash of dark brown brows furrowing in concentration. She was currently in the process of avidly drawing a potential upgrade for the Messa on the scrap of a napkin she'd pilfered from the barkeep. Okay not quite as pilfered as much as flashed a smile and he gave her a stalk and a stylus for her to use.

She was on a roll. Focused. The Messa could already go fast, but there were a couple of issues with the hyper-drive. Namely, the fact that they could explode at any given time! Kalie had the idea of potentially installing a failsafe that could.. well... if the big boom would hit, at the very least assure that they won't go exploding to their deaths. Whatever explosion COULD happen, should at least hopefully be caught by a type of a shield. Perhaps something that would run on a back up power systems to contain any damage. If they could contain it... it meant that in the off beat chance the hyperdrive did go array, Kurt and she wouldn't be knocking on the Nine Hells all to quickly.

Just instead of being blown up to bits, they could very well die of starvation if the back up generator went too and they were dead in space.

"Hmmm..." the barkeep brought her another pale ale, and she flashed him a grateful grin.

"OH!" she lifted her hand up, waving the stylus. "Can I get a plate of oranges please?!"

Was that so long ago?

Kaile would mull over that memory, taking a deep breath. Okay, she told herself, giving a nod. I'll do it. I'll do all the work, salvage what I can. The Lorrdian began to smooth out the napkin, placing it onto her right of the small table she had. To the right, she flipped her journal to a fresh blank page. First thing is that she'll need to transfer the fleshed out schematic. Work from there. Fine tune it.

There was also the consideration about a proper power supply. One of the reasons the Messa had a chance of blowing up was due to it's reactor. If there was a way to get a more energy efficient reactor...

Plucking a stylus from her bag, she let one end of it tap the fullness of her lower lip. This was good. For the first time, she felt a bit better. It was all a play pretend of course, it was just a way to keep her mind busy. In her head, if she was creating something that would keep Kurt safe, she was at the very least, giving something back. It made her feel as if a little piece of her was still with him, looking over him.

As if this would still connect them together.

It was a silly thought, one a twenty-seven year old shouldn't encourage or have to begin with. He may not want it. Or even use it. He might look at the gift suspiciously.... but.. but...

A tiny part of her hoped that Kurt wouldn't. And maybe, just maybe. He'd think of the happier times instead.

All of this stuff was precious in some way. One wouldn't have thought of it like that, but the small knick knacks that Kaile had bought and placed aboard The Messa all meant something to both he and her. They weren't valuable, at least not worth any credits, but Kurt found them to be full of memory. There were the odd little troll dolls that had sat in the kitchen, the strange plush rancor that Kaile had found at a Trade Station, the "spyglass" that she had purchased from some junk trader.

It was all here.

All on the floor and half broken.

The Courier salvaged what he could, placing the items that weren't broken or torn up into another pile besides the first one. Sadly, most of the things he placed there were worse for ware as well, having only barely survived the explosion that had very nearly killed Kurt himself. The Pilot frowned slightly, placing the stuffed Rancor into the pile before skimming through the pile again. This time something caught his eye. he pushed aside half a metal plate, his lips turning into a frown as he pulled out the small electrum cube.

His fingers wrapped around the puzzlebox, the device fitting in his palm almost too perfectly. Kurt looked at it for a moment, his thoughts not even reaching the fact that the thing shouldn't have been in here, that it had been in his room. Kurt frowned slightly, staring at the small metal cube. Kaile had left it here, he assumed as a present. He had found it when he initially boarded the ship, sitting on his desk all by itself. His frown deepened, and suddenly he felt anger rise in his chest.

"Kark!" Violently Kurt threw the cube against the wall. The cube bounced, landing on the floor and sliding for a second before coming to a stop.

[ Greetings ladies and gentlebeings, this is your Captain speaking. We will depart shortly. Our route to the Corellian Sector will take...]
The drone of the Captain's voice would be pushed off to the side, just white noise for Kaile. Her dark head of freshly dyed chestnut hair fell forward along bent head, the dark slash of her eyebrows drawn together as she transferred the schematic. A new power source. What sort of powersource.

Lightly she tapped her lip with the stylus, thinking. there were several sources she could use, but she didn't have the credits to purchase what she wanted. A new isotope 5 generator would be fantastic; but they were so horribly priced right now.

Another tap of her lips.

However, if she remembered correctly from her Alliance updates, there were several battles that could..well be salvaged as sites. Armatech had worked in conjunctionwith Arceneau Trade for a new generator. It was possible to search for areas where ArmaTech salvage would be available. That might take a few of her own personal days to search on her own.

It wasn't like when she did them with Kurt. Doing them by herself took longer... not to mention the risk.

The thought of Kurt made her pause. They would have been in the midst of the Bazaar right now, if things hadn't escalated. Would they have found what they needed? Would they have been busily setting up what they had found?

So many what if scenarios that made Kaile tighten her grip on her stylus.

He didn't even know what the fucking thing was for.

Both Kaile and he had played with it on multiple occasions, just shifting around the pieces and moving them around to no avail. It was something to keep busy really, something to look pretty and that was about it. The last time he had picked it up had been while Kaile had been in the 'fresher. He had solved one of the sides, though that still left five of them untouched. He frowned slightly, looking at the stupid thing and offering it a scowl.

Kurt didn't know why he suddenly felt so angry, but a rage burned in his chest.

"Kark." He muttered, standing up and gritting his teeth as he wandered over to the small cube. He scooped it up, lancing his fingers around it and tossing it halfway into the air before catching it again. "I'll keep you, just for her."

His head shook slightly, a slight woozy feeling pouring over him as the brief thought of ejecting the thing out the airlock passed over him. Eventually he managed to push the nausea away, stepping over towards the kitchen counter and depositing the small cube there. Seconds later he was on the floor again, sorting the rest of the pile until eventually he had neatly separated what could be saved, and what couldn't. He frowned slightly looking at all that he would have to throw out. "Sorry, Kaile."

There really wasn't saving any of it. Pieces of shrapnel, metal and glass both were embedded in half of it, the other half was scorched and completely destroyed.

No use keeping that around.
