DESCRIPTION
The Omni-Directional Mobility System, or ODM, is a sleek, relatively quiet alternative to the typical jet/jump pack. The system's primary means of locomotion are the four cable launchers, two on each side of the user's body. The system also includes a small repulsor pack to aid the user during transit, and is capable of short durations of sustained flight alone. It should be noted however that to rely on the repulsor pack alone is very taxing on the system's small power pack, roughly three minutes of flight for a fully charged pack. Additionally, due to the device being secured to the user's lower back, replacing the power pack can be problematic by one's self.
The Cable Launchers fire specially made grappling hooks that are designed to easily penetrate organic matter, allowing the system to easily maneuver through wooded terrain. The grappling hooks also come with powerful electromagnets that activate the moment they impact a surface, enabling the system to move quickly, and confidently in terrains like cities, and even aboard starships. With four launchers in total the ODM system is capable of consistent, rapid movement through any battlefield with sufficient lateral terrain for the system to anchor to. Unfortunately the ODM system requires an advanced targeting system to incorporate into in order to fire the cable launchers accurately. The alternative to this is having the user implanted with a cybernetic control chip, allowing them to trigger the firing mechanisms mentally. Finally, it is theoretically possible that a sufficiently advanced droid could use the system without need for much upgrades or reprogramming.
The entire ODM system is designed to be easily incorporated into many, if not most, modern combat armor systems. It relies on the same targeting software as most armor mounted weapon systems, the MM9 wrist rocket for example. While it is possible to wear the ODM's support rigging without a full suit of armor, it tends to put the user's body through unnecessary stresses. The system is most comfortably for the user when wore over a body glove, and secured to armor plates, thus reducing the rigorous demands on one's body.
