No rest for the weary

Vinnath-class Pocket Carrier Starlight Skies, somewhere in the Mid Rim

Reverting...now...” droned the ensign.

Another boring run. Lieutenant Qash took another glug from his mug of caf as the flowing lines of hyperspace turned into pinpricks of distant starlight. His eyes briefly glanced out of the viewport, not that he was expecting to find anything in the middle of nowhere. Nothing out of the ordinary here...but I better check the list to make sure that everyone got here safe and sound. He began to idly tap commands into the corvette's command chair as he savored the deep, rich taste of his drink. Slowly but surely, the other ships of the Project Champion supply convoy began to appear behind him. If they had been anywhere close to the Core, or near any consistent source of danger, it might have been a different convoy with the latest freighter designs swiftly transporting their supplies under the watchful eye of a large Republic naval force. But deep in the rim, far from the frontlines of the war against the One Sith or any other consistent threat, it was a different story. Qash's own ship was probably the newest craft, and it predated the Netherworld event. The only other escorting craft was a battle-scarred Vigilance-class corvette literally two months away from being decommissioned in a scrapyard. The rest of the convoy was filled with the dregs of the Republic navy's logistical fleet: a little over a dozen light freighters of various makes and a trio of ancient container ships. But Qash took comfort that such a low-priority job didn't have his superiors or command looking too closely at his actions. Things were comfortable here.

The last sensor blip appeared on his screen, confirming that all of the ships had made it. He raised his mug for another sip, but no liquid rolled down his tongue. Kark it, out of caf again. Qash lowered the mug and looked at its insides. Not even a drop... The man turned his second in command, a blue-skinned female humanoid who was only a month out of the academy.

Tines, you have the bridge, I'm going to go back and grab some more caf. Try not to blow anything up while I'm gone.”

Aye aye sir.”

"I am Covetousness, begotten of an old churl in a leather bag; and, might I now obtain my wish, this house, you, and all should turn to gold, that I might lock you safe into my chest. O my sweet gold!"
- Doctor Faustus, Christopher Marlowe.

And it happened from the distant star to the bleeding pale light, sharp geometric shapes with angular heads burst out and onto the open stretch of space, confronting [member="Gir Quee"] ships. The ships were old and wore insignias that were skulls, with little underworld knowledge one might know who these pirates were, or one might not but that didn't change the fact that the Jackals were there now.

It was if the world had stood still, frozen. The calm before the storm the silence before the hurricane. It was gravelly and had a robotic overtone but was not without human elements. "Greetings republic, I Flannigan Mcnash am here to relieve you of your cargo. Do not resist me, think on the life of your crew before you give me your answer." The ships moved in lock step, the cyborg had hoped for a parley, withdrawing enough cargo to sate his hungry account, leaving enough for them to not want to retaliate after all these were his ship's they were risking. but he had little to no time one call to their HQ they could have a real fleet out here in maybe half an hour or less.

The ships moved in a net like formation, their fleet if one could call it that was made up of two crusader class corvette, and five freighters that ranged from YT-2400 and the more obsolete G9 Rigger freighter, and towards the back a small but noticeable in the cluster a BT-7 Thunderclap that the Jackals were so famous for using.

"Cadan give the signal for the shields and weapons, I want us ready for a fight." he leaned into the com link before turning back to face the open panel looking out and onto the oncoming battleground.

Cadan piloted the second Crusader Class Corvette. He paced around in the bridge his hands behind is back. Cadan looked down over the 'convoy'. This is going to be interesting, he though to himself, subconsciously licking his lips. The message burst from the somewhat silent bridge. Cadan's left hand came up to his mouth, his comm activating. "Aye Cap'n. Putting them up now."

Cadan strided over to one of the computers in the bridge. His hands ran over the buttons, a finger hitting a button here and there. Soon the screen lit up. "Shields Active." Again his fingers danced across the dashbourd, bringing the weapons online.

"Shields and weapons active Cap'n." With that said, he began to bark orders to his pirates commanding them to get into battle stations.

"Is this...actually happening?" pondered Qash.

The man felt his hands beginning to tremble, and quickly set down his mostly-full cup of caf. The man's eyes wandered around the bridge in what seemed like an eternity. Some of the bridge crew seemed similarly dazed, as if they had just fell into a bad dream. But others, such as their shield operator, immediately began to rise up to the situation through either cool nerves or the training pounded into them over the years. Lieutenant Qash fumbled for the right thing to say, the right thing to do. But out of that shock, only one thought came to mind.

"Launch the fighters," mumbled the man.

"What did you say sir?"

"Launch the karking fighters!"

"Aye sir, scrambling Green Kalidor flight to intercept."

Two pairs of paint-scrapped Btl-Q9 Quickdraws began to jet out of the ship's hangar bay before looping around to engage the newcoming pirates. The old Vigilance-class corvette, the Windrunner, began to work its way up from the rear of the convoy to eventually join the Starlight Skies in confronting the two Crusader corvettes approaching them. But while the escorting ship's response was slow, the cargo ships' was of pure chaos. Several of the smaller tramp freighters began to turn around to try and outrun their pursuers, while some of the larger ships continued to plow forward, as if the pirates hadn't shown up at all. And then there were those who immediately began to dart behind the Starlight Skies or the Windrunner, hoping that they could use the military ships as a shield against the inevitable pirate attack. But two of the tramp freighters powered down their drives, shields, and weapons, perhaps either hoping to sneak by the pirates by silent running techniques, or be boarded with the least amount of violence.

But the republic soldiers present weren't going to simply surrender. A burst of laser fire erupted from the bow the Starlight Skies to lash out at one of the pirate's modified light freighters. Qash managed to pull himself into the corvette's command seat, and began to slowly type in commands to the ship's communication system.

"You've thought on the lives of your crew, and yet you still send them to their deaths." it was a pause a breath, something airy and vulgar, a premonition to the coming conflict. "Begin the assault [member="Cadan Tazi"]." It was than that their battle began, the pirates having appeared well and truly prepared launched their assault as the first fighters were seen, the modified freights pulling out and in front of the corvettes aiming and beginning their assaults on the fighters.

The cyborg commander's heavy lidded eyes shuddered and adjusted to the darkening expanse of space, the steel grey hulls melting into the newly monochromatic expanse of durasteel, there came a brilliant flash that flickered and died. It was not a bolt, streaking towards the opposing vigilance class corvette, but more like an almighty camera flash that blanketed everything at once. Moments later there came the rumbling laser fire and right on cue the barrage began falling haphazardly between the ships.

"I tell you this now commander. What I do from here on out is on your hands, every ship to fall every man and women to die it is all on your hands, but I will not take the blame in my mind, I washed my hand's when I offered you a chance." He moved across the bridge of his ship addressing his crew with a surreal nod of his head that no purely organic-being could accomplish.

Character
Cadan's Crusader sprang to life. The ship rotated, so that the starboard side was facing the small fleet. Pirates began running to their battle stations, arming all of the weapons on the ship. His eyes scanned over the the scene, and he saw the fighter being launched. Cadan spoke into a comm, his voice echoing to the one pirate using the Point-defense Cannon. "I want you to take out those fighters!"

NPC
The pirate operating the Point-defence cannon, ran his fingers across his computer. Soon the cannon spat forth its fiery lasers towards one of the Quickdraws, in an attempt to destroy the small ship.

While the Point-defence cannon fired. 5 starboard cannons began to reign fire upon the Vigilance-class corvette. 3 began to shoot at the engines. While the other 2 shot at the bridge.

Vigilance-class Corvette Windrunner

"Taking a lot of fire, but it's mostly laser cannons," muttered Ensign Prent.

Lieutenant Vopew shook his head, "That doesn't mean we're safe. The sheer volume of fire is going to take us if we're not careful, especially given the...ah...lack of logistical support for our ship."

Despite being constantly surrounded by supplies, and despite travelling from industrial facilities, shipyards, and ordinance regional depots, the Windrunner was not up to being entirely ship-shape. With its decommissioning orders already written, the Windrunner hadn't be able to receive replacement parts or any more ammunition. On one hand, it made sense not to waste money on a ship they were going to junk soon, but on the other hand, the ship could really use proton torpedoes right now. But he had already fired their one remaining torpedo. Half of the guns on the Windrunner weren't operational, but he'd do the best with what they had. A pair of dual turbolasers lashed back at the Crusader corvette's fire, even as the ship took the brunt of the pirate attack. Lieutenant Vopew glanced at his console. Shields at 42% already? The shield generators must be in worse shape than we thought...

BTL-Q9 Quickdraw Green Kalidor Two, nearing [member="Cadan Tazi"]'s corvette

Flight Officer Cale Donneten deftly followed in his leader's footsteps, or rather the ion wake of his starfighter, as the space around them began to light up with weapon's fire. He bracketed the angular hull of the oncoming Crusader corvette with his targetting software, and pulled the trigger. Twin streams of ruby red fire lashed out at the corvette. But even as he did so, one of the pirate ship's point-defence cannons targeted him. A steady stream of fiery light flashed around him as his shields began to heat up under the intense pirate fire. He attempted to dodge the pirate's fire by aborting his attack run. It's shields almost battered to nothing, Green Kalidor Two banked hard away from the corvette and attempted to fire on the G9 Rigger freighter that the Jackals had deployed.

[member="Flannigan Mcnash"]

As he steadied himself in front of the bridges furthest most panel his eye's would narrow, the slit like eyes contracting with an almost tangible look of hate. showers of sparks like a fountain, plumes of black grey smoke, wound itself around a single Rigger freighter, like a great hungry serpent, devoured whole in it's path. The fighters would make short work on the modified freighters, they'd have to break them soon or they'd be broken. "[member="Cadan Tazi"], launching first set of missiles. Follow that up with a second."

The missiles ignited in a fiery ball of yellow flame, billowing outwards, filling the adjacent space between the two opposing ship, it was centred on the Vigilance-class Corvette Windrunner. This would end the conflict as sure as anything, a sustained missile barrage, he tried once more his pointed digits drawing circles on the dashboard as he opened communication with [member="Gir Quee"].

"I ask once more, stand down. You must realise you're attempt is admirable but miss placed. We do not mind searching through the corpse of your ships, and I promise you than none of your crew will survive than. Save me my time and I'll save your men, do not spit in the face of my offer."

| [member="Gir Quee"] |

The Corvette sheilds began to drop under the constant fire. The numbers on the screen dropping "100%" down to "72%".

Cadan got Flannigans message, "Aye Sir." He replied. And relayed it onto one of the pirates, who hit the switch. The Corvette spat forth a small barrage of missles, arcing their way towards the Vigilance class. A small smile cross Cadan's face. But he was brough back to reality after one of the quickdraws performed a small bombing run.

He looked to the shields. "65%". Cadan looked to the nearest pirate "Shut down anything we don't need and direct the power to the shields!" With that said, the pirate shut down the hyperdrives, and the navicomputers. It wasn't much but it helped.

Vinnath-class Pocket Carrier Starlight Skies

A brief flash of light flooded their viewport as the Jackal's missile barrage pierced through the Windrunner's shields and then destroyed the old corvette in a fireball. Milli-seconds later, the light receded as the combustion process was deprived of oxygen. But still, glittering shards of superheated debris blossomed out from where the corvette once stood, pelting the ships around them. Qash's mouth dropped as he realized how bad the explosion had wracked several of the ships that had took shelter behind the corvette. While none of them were completely destroyed, most had had their shields knocked out, and several had lost their sublight engines and defensive weapons. Qash winced. This was quickly becoming a bloodbath, and one with the odds arrayed against them.

"Signal all ships to retreat," ordered Qash, briefly pausing, "if they can."

"We're leaving some of them behind?" asked a young ensign.

"We don't have a choice," muttered the Lieutenant, "we can't win this fight, and we don't need any more victims to go these...people. I wish them the best of luck."

The surviving ships of the convoy began to scatter and escape to the realm of hyperspace, if they could.

[member="Flannigan Mcnash"] | [member="Cadan Tazi"]

A smile crossed Cadan's face as he saw the ships fleeing. "Cease fire, for now. Start to recharge the shields." He opened up a comm to Flannigan. "Admiral, whats the plan?" He pace the bridge of the ship, looking at some of the ships left behind.

"It's over Cadan, begin the salvaging operation."

A dark blanket, contrasting with blacks and yellows, and the occasional white, which is shaped as a circle and sometimes a crescent. There are stars which dot the blanket in a intricate pattern. This is space and there was doom in it, the half moored shells of ships attached to adjacent rubble piles, it was than that the pirates moved among them, like long shadows they stealthy moved among the debri stealing away the remaining valuables. And it was victory not for the defenders of man but for thieves, the republic would know lose to the most unlikely of groups.

“If we say that we have no sin,
We deceive ourselves, and there's no truth in us.
Why then belike we must sin,
And so consequently die.
Ay, we must die an everlasting death.”

Arendal-class Heavy Cruiser Arendal, Lantillies

Gir stood at the edge of the heavy cruiser's viewport, observing the orbital traffic shoot up from the starports below and into the black ocean of space. Often his eyes wound find themselves fixated on an unfamiliar design from a new manufacturer or a foreign region of space. There was a beauty in their designs. It was not only of pure aesthetics, but in their functionality and intrinsic cultural nature. Gir could appreciate the organic flowing lines of the mon calamari designs just as much as he could the simple, angular lines of the native lantillian craft. he heard the soft footsteps of his aide-de-camp walk up from behind him.

"What is it Lod?" asked the blonde man, turning to face the duros.

"One of our convoys has been attacked."

Gir frowned, "And?"

"The escorts were defeated in battle, and some of our cargo ships managed to escape. The raiders, we think they were pirates, managed to get away with a fair amount of supplies slated for Project Champion."

"Strength of the raiders?"

"From what we've seen, a pair of heavily armed corvettes and a bunch of up-gunned light freighters...oh, they think that they spotted a BT-7 Thunderclap too."

Where have I heard that before? The man briefly closed his eyes as he searched for the source of that familiarity. There's a new pirate group that's known for using them...what's their name? He quietly cursed his lack of memory as he started to talk to his command chair. He could better look up reports of the group from there.

"How far away is the convoy?"

"Well, the ships are just getting here, but if you mean the attack..."

"Yes, the attack..." said the man, settling into his chair.

"The waypoint they were attacked is at least several hours out."

"Too late for us to save them, huh?" mused Gir, rapidly typing in commands, "we should still investigate the battlefield. It might give us some clues, or maybe if they're more brazen, they may have even left us a message."

"Shall I give the order to take us out?"

"Yes, and have the Wren and Ibis join us for this little cruise."

"Aye sir."

Gir knew that the Arendal had no hope of chasing down the pirates in such light ships. He would similarly have to use two light vessels to pursue them if they encountered the pirates still picking the remains of the convoy. While he didn't expect either of the Utopia-class Corvettes to have quite the firepower needed to take down the pirates, the Arendal's fighter complement could offset any firepower disadvantage presented by the pirates. But that was assuming that he even encountered the pirates. He would likely have to step up patrols and find some way of bolstering the convoy defenses. He might even have to come up with alternate routes if the pirates continued to present problems to his operations. This could be the start of a long headache...

Great husks of scraped ships, grimy expanses of durasteel and broken bands of metal, it was only something like space could accomplish that in hour, leaving shells where there had been life, leaving darkness where there was once light. windows staring down, remnants of shattered glass in now rotting frames, mortar and stone crumbling. Maybe it was once a statuette or a collection of rock that one of the marines kept, well what ever it was it was now space debri.

The pirates had gone, claiming both metal and remaining crew that were left behind, both would be sold. It was space the final frontier, yet for some it was the final doom.

Arendal-class Heavy Cruiser Arendal, at the convoy battlefield

The heavy cruiser surged into realspace, flanked on either side by the Wren and Ibis. The ships' sensors began to scan the area for any activity, but there was none. He sighed and began to type commands into his console. The two Utopia-class Corvettes, accompanied by the Arendal's shuttles, began to jet further into the debris field for recovery operations. Just as a precaution, the man launched a squadron of his starfighters to serve as a CAP , just in case the pirates or some other vagabond appeared. The man from Hast didn't expect to recover any of the material goods, but he might be able to at least recover some of the dead from the charred out hulls for a proper burial. One of his screens began to flash, indicating that intelligence had been able to identify the pirates based on the markings on their ships. He eyes squinted at the tiny text. The Jackals, huh. Well, at least that's a start...Now to see if I can find out where they're out...A voice interrupted his thoughts as he began to type a request for further information on their whereabouts and activities.

"Sir, hyperspace reversion...it's an independent light freighter."

"Intercept it," ordered Gir, "no-one comes here just by accident."

He pulled up one of his ship's EPR displays, which showed a pair of R46 Valiants swooping in on a modern reproduction of a YT-1000 freighter. He eyed its hull curiously, half-expecting it to have some sort of piratical markings like a blazing claw. But it didn't. The freighter didn't have any markings on it at all. He pulled up the ship's transponder and tried to match it to any Republic records, but apparently the Wandering Lotus had never visited any Republic worlds. More Republic starfighters swarmed around the freighter as it was directed to enter the Arendal's hangar bay. Lieutenant Lod eyed the man curiously.

"What do you expect to happen, sir?"

"Well, it's probably not a member of the Jackals," admitted Gir, "but this isn't a commonly used route, and the timing is suspicious, especially for a ship that has apparently never visited a Republic world. I'd bet that it's a scavenger, here to pick through the remains to see if he could find anything valuable."

"I don't see how that helps us, sir."

"He had to find out from somewhere about the battle, and if it wasn't from us, it was from the Jackals in one shape or form. Perhaps the Jackals were selling stuff and he overhead about the battle, or perhaps if the Jackals sell people into slavery, he heard from one of the slavers. that he sold our people too. The criminal underworld is a curious place, where everybody knows a somebody, but no-one knows anyone, at least when we come knocking. But maybe we can get him to talk about a clue the Jackals."

Dug_full_body.png

There was a laugh over the open com, and a slight shimmer of the air as if twisted by something tangiable, the holocron bloomed like an open flower. Slender with a powerfully build, somewhat humanoid with a unique pair of hands, or were they feet. The head had an anguliar and ellogated features, there was something to the way the eyes move and the sneer of contempt that was on those lips. It was a Dug, and a rude one at that. "Ree tee. Whao uba banag bai doth wa yahaa." There was laughter after that, most likely a rude remark made against the republic in the Dug native language. "What's a bunch of republic refuse doing out here, I thought you lost and moved on."

There was a movement to its ship as it prodded through some nearbouring rubble. "Nothing, those pirates don't leave much." he said over the open com uncaringly "Looky, I might be able to help you. I want this rubble for me self, and you lot are in the way. 'ow about I tell you where to find or atleast where the pirates have been." There was a pause and a wet throaty sound came over the mic as the Dug licked its lip's. "Tatooine, they were boasting about the raid. Sold some slaves too, republic ships tecs if I ain't mistaken. Yours I presume."

Arendal-class Heavy Cruiser Arendal, convoy attack site

"Do we let him go?" questioned Lieutenant Lod, leaning up to his ear.

"No," said the Grand Admiral quietly, "we don't. Tractor him in."

One of the Arendal's tractor beam projectors reached out and grabbed the small freighter. Gir gazed at the holo of the dug in front of him. He guessed that it would vibrating pretty heavily if its engines fought the heavy cruiser's tractor beam. Perhaps because he was unfamiliar with the dug species in general, he couldn't really read the dug's nonverbal cues. It didn't help Gir's perception that the dug apparently used his hands as feet, and his feet as hands. Gir cleared his throat as he stared down the scavenger.

"Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't just trust the word of someone I just met. You're coming with us until we know for sure that you're telling the truth. If your information turns out to be correct, I will give you more than a fair amount of credits for bringing this information to us, and I will arrange a pardon for you attempting to scavenge republic property without a permit. You can then be free to go on your way as you please."

"Bai mah pateessa, bai mah woceuea an bai twa jewz ku can." the Dug groaned, the ship was drawn into the ship the wingly folding horisotently as it fixed itself in the landing postion, there was a shower of steam, a line of black desolving around the head of the ship as the lights flash on and off in some vain attempt to blind his kidnappers. "You're wasten your time, I know very little about the Jackals, doubt they'd be still on Tat too." There was a whimper a slight fleshy sigh that welled up from the back of the throat like some last backlash of bile. "Alright, fine you better make it would my wild." there was a shake of his hand or well foot, it balled up and into a fist and shook from side to side threateningly.

Tatooine
The cruel suns beat down, it's duel malevolent eyes unblinking, and the sky was it's co-conspirator with not even a wisp of cloud to soften the harsh rays. The fauna took shelter in the shadows of the rocks where the sand was not hot enough to roast them. Each step sunk into the searing sand, the air was thick and hazy, each breath like drowning larva. This is Tatooine.

"Follow me Repubs." the Dug mocked leading them into a cantina, there was a sudden silence to the music a sudden shift in movement and mood, a few looked them up and down either nodding their head or shaking it in disaproval at their uniforms. there was a near human behind the counter, a near human who approached the Dug setting aside a cup he was cleaning with a slice of rag.

"What are you doing bringing a bunch of Repubs in here for, you know how I feel." there was a momentary silence between the Dug and bartender before the Dug spoke. "You owe me, now pay up. Tell them everything about the Jackals or so help me." there was a wave of motion from the man, how his hands rose and fell in swift decisive movement. "Alright, sit down. I assume you'd like to know things from the start. Happened a year or more back, slave auction. As you'd think it isn't really uncommon. But Jed were around this one, took out the slaver left them in ruin. Both physically and finanically." he'd look to the side sliding a drink towards [member="Gir Quee"], before continueing. "That was the Jackals, some say their captain died there and came back a ghost, but those who say that are spice addicts. He be a borg, a big nasty one at that, all machine no heart."

"I mean 'e comes around here sometimes, sells a shipment or two and pirates one of the local smugglers. Use to attack moisture farms, they had a bad habit of doing that back in their youth, but let me tell you out 'ere in crim space they've got friends. Big criminal syndict backers, they're hired guns. The only language they know is credits, and between you and me they're some of the worst. Anyway where you wanna head to find them, Doulder sector, they've got a set up way out there towards Drunkenwell. Now the slaves they sold you can find them at the market, the guy owes me one I can get them released."

| [member="Gir Quee"] |

Gir slowly nodded and gently released fingers from the grip of his blaster pistol. Getting his men back would make the journey more than worthwhile in Gir's eyes. It also would pay off any trouble the dug would have gotten into. His turned his eyes downward to eye the dug.

"You're free to go," said Gir, handing the alien a credit chip, "we'll call that a finder's fee. As an additional courtesy to you, we'll also refuel your ship to help make up for the inconvenience of this trip."

Gir turned to Lieutenant Lod, "Why do you and Master Sergeant Lugo have a talk with the auctioneer that this young gentlemen mentioned. If he can't be persuaded to release them peacefully, tell him that his shipments are going to start disappearing. That's assuming we don't abduct or kill him or her or any slaver employees."

"Ah...yes sir."

Gir despised slavers more than he despised pirates. He would have no qualms about playing dirty with that sort of man. He was even more surprised that in this day and age, that the bonds of slavery still existed at all. But we are out of Republic space after all, I'll have to be somewhat careful...probably a good thing we only came in shuttles, instead of the big ships. That might have caused far more attention than I'd like...might have even given the Jackals a hint that we're after them. But then again, I suppose they're used to be chased around...Doldur Sector...that's not too far away from here. Gir led his entourage out of the cantina into the dusty streets of Tatooine, taking care to keep his uniform hidden by the drab colored issue weather cloak. While the whole group looked a little out of place wearing such garb, there was nothing to immediately label them as being all "pubs". He turned his head to face his duros aide-de-camp.

"I'm going back to Arendal to plot our course to the Doldur sector and see if I can't find anything through the newsnet or Republic intelligence about what the Jackals are up to. But if you have any problems, give me a call. If you don't get back in touch with me by 1800 hours, I'm sending in the cavalry, got it?"

"Yes sir."

"Good..."

His mind turned to thoughts of what the Jackals could be potentially up to...

[member="Flannigan Mcnash"]

The slaves were brought with ease, credits was the language of Tatooine for all the grudges in the world they could be forgotten over such a small thing, a chip spoke louder than the pain of the past, for in chips it speaks of the future and how well equipped you'll be for it. A little research into the holonet would turn up plenty, they had the remains of past slave auctions and even some advertisements.

With an audible groan of static the sound clips on in poor audio quality. "Got a problem, got a war that needs winning or somebody you just don't like, well we've got the solution in super heated plasma, The Jackals will erase and eviscerate." This seemed to be an adverb, as your eye’s narrow and adjust you would see a sequence of numbers, you’d assume you could contact the Jackals with it. And another advertising a city. Come to kalandra.

Character

"Look Cadan, I've told you once I've told you a million times, schedule." he addressed [member="Cadan Tazi"] over an open com, it was nauseating experience he ruled a space station and by extension a city, his hand's were filled with paperwork, he was only glad that the room was empty for one might see a killing machine filing his taxes. "I know we're pirates, but we've got to go to that new road opening, and I refuse to cut the ribbon this time. And We've hired people to bring children along, sit them on your lap smile for the cameras and for god sakes don't let Thraxis near them this time. One happened to call him stupid and he had to get in a fight with a five year old."

It was the Jackals, and they weren't raiding they were on 'leave'. The pirates had very little time for pirating, they were by in large too busy abusing taxes of the city Kalandra, and the protection credit they received from letting the Hutt cartel do business in their city.
