Biography
I still remember the needle being stuck in my arm.
Sit still, Nicky.
My mom whispered as she held me. She hadn’t approved of the test, but with a man like my father I imagine she didn’t have much choice in the matter. Strangely enough I cannot remember his face no matter how hard I try. Not to say that I don’t know how he looks, his face has graced the billboards and holonet so often that it's been burned in my retina.
But there aren’t any real memories, even as I look back at the test his face is all cloaked in shadows and smoke.
Strange.
The private clinic’s room had been cold. My mother specifically asked if they could bring her a blanket for me, I recall this because instead of answering her directly he first looked back my dad. It cemented my perception of Jared Ovmar - a man cloaked in shadows, but commanding authority without even uttering a single syllable.
Back then I didn’t understand what the test was for and no matter my nagging mother refused to provide any useful insight.
“Negative, sir. I am sorry.” So that didn’t mean much to me. But it did mean something to my mom, because I practically felt her stiffen next to me. The doc wasn’t paying attention to her though, his singular focus was that shadowy man in the background of the room.
There was a subtle shrug of the shoulder and then my father turned to go.
No other words, nothing to my mother or me. The test didn’t show what he wanted and so it was time for him to leave.
“That’s it?!” the shout was strange. The woman I knew back then didn’t scream at all, no matter what the situation was.
Ovmar stopped. His hand already on the door, but he turned around then. I still can’t recall the features of his face, but there was just a hint of amusement… or maybe I am just adding it now.
“I will take care of y’all, but the kid ain’t what I need. It’s for the best.”
And then he left the room, not even waiting for a retort.
