Accessibility:

Nickel One is well known location and easy to find by anyone. However, the natural hazards presented by the Roche Asteroid belt make it difficult to reach the colony by a straight shot through hyperspace, out of risk of collision. Without real time navigational data readily available, most visitors usually have to start out at the edge of the asteroid field, then travel onto Nickel One by sublight.

Once within close proximity of Nickel One (1,000km), approaching vessels must check in with traffic control, and subject themselves to a cursory scan before cleared for docking. Once docked, vessels and their crew go through another inspection and background check by the Nickel One Port Authority (NOPA) before granted entry deeper into the colony.

Government officials, security forces, and other VIPs with special clearance may enjoy an expedited inspection process, but they are required to dock in specially designated hangars unless a current assignment requires them to work within the public docks.

Once past check in, visitors are free to roam the residential areas and other public sections of NIckel One, though ID on person is always required.

Low level clearance is necessary to enter the factory zones, and medium or high clearance for accessing government/military facilities and other special areas like the Verpine nurseries. Additionally, companies and private entities within NIckel One may have their own security protocols to follow on their properties in addition to standard procedures.

 • Description: Nickel One is a large asteroid colony with a diameter of 311 kilometers. It is the de facto capital of the Roche system, and the political and cultural center of the Verpine race. What started out as a simple resource satellite grew into a magnificent city state over the centuries as the asteroid was bored through, and successive layers of megastructures have been added until the original asteroid is barely visible. All the additional layers have a distinctive patchwork appearance.
POINTS OF INTEREST

Nickel Shipyards/Hangars

Most of the external megastructures of Nickel One are dedicated shipyards and drydocks, used to build and service hundreds of starships of all sizes, from tiny skiffs to behemoth warships.

Because of its advanced repair facilities, and location along a major hyperlane, Nickel One has become a popular waystation for travelers and freighter haulers moving between the Core and Outer Rim.

Built within the docks are a hodgepodge of residential blocks where the majority of Nickel One’s immigrant population resides, mostly dock workers and engineers.

The Quarrie Air & Space Museum

An enterprising Mandalorian shipright by the name of Matthias Corday established the museum in the outer zones of Nickel One sometime in the early 800s, showcasing aeronautical vehicles across all eras from the the industrial pre-hyperspace age to the modern era. It’s one of the few places you may see an exhibit of a hot air balloon next to an X-wing.

The museum's collection features both common examples of craft from each era, as well as some rarer specimens, like petrified Charon bioships.

Zudah

Roughly 800 years ago, the Verpine reluctantly signed a nonaggression pact with the Mandalorian government at the time as a preemptive measure to prevent a hostile invasion should the Mandalorians seek conquest beyond their borders once more. The terms of the non-aggression pact was for the Verpine to supply the Mandalorians with defense technology and technical assistance, while the Mandalorians assisted in defending Roche. As part of their responsibilities to the Verpine, the Mandalorians established a base on Nickel One, called Zudah.

The relationship proved fruitful for both sides, and while the non-aggression pact ended during the Gulag Era, Mandalorians continued to live on Nickel One and integrate into Verpine society. The original base grew into a permanent enclave and has flourished over the centuries.

Nickel One Symphony House

One of the more peculiar attractions of Nickel One, this site is used by Verpine musicians and choirs, engaging in their unique method of music making by rubbing their legs together. While popular among the native Verpine, the Symphony House doesn’t attract many outsiders except a few curious onlookers and xenobiologists.

Factory/Lab Districts

These are a vast network manufacturing centers and laboratories owned by the Verpine government and private interests. Much of the production here is dedicated the fabrication and research of components for vehicle building, but there’s also significant manufacturing dedicated to droids, weapons, advanced electronics, and medical devices. Small firms and workshops also exist here that create more specialized and/or premium products.

Similar to the outer shipyards, some residential areas are intermixed within the districts, but real estate here is generally undesirable because of pollution. Verpine prefer to live deeper within the asteroids, while immigrants like to stick the megastructures on the outer zones.

Hive Center

Most of the native Verpine population reside here at the core of the asteroid. The nurseries, agro stations, and all important government institutions are based here, including the “palace” of the ruling Hive Mothers of the Verpine race.

SECURITY

Level: Maximum

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The asteroid was first colonized by the mysterious Verpine in a move that well predated the Old Republic. Initially it served as a resource satellite, mined for its rich deposits of nickel and other valuable ores. The literal minded Verpine would designate the asteroid as “Nickel One”, being their primary source of nickel.

Over the centuries, the Verpine gradually bored through Nickel One during extractions, enlarging their artificial habitat in the process until the colony became a full blown city-state in the vein of Cloud City. As the habitat matured, so did industry on Nickel One, shifting from simple resource extraction to the production of sophisticated electronics, weapons, and starship production on site. By the time of the Clone Wars, Nickel One and the Verpine as a whole had become renowned for their shipbuilding, and mining on the asteroid had ceased as manufacturing became the colony’s most profitable operation.

By far the largest and wealthiest settlement within the Verpine community, it became the the cultural, economic, and political center of the race. After the conclusion of the Yuuzhan Vong War, Nickel One was officially designated the capital of the Roche System.

Despite suffering some setbacks from incursions by various iterations of the Galactic Empire, NIckel One would continue to flourish as a major manufacturing and technology hub. By the age of the galactic Golden Era in the early 400s, Nickel One was regarded as the site of some of the finest shipwrights in the galaxy.

Gulag Era

As with the rest of the galaxy, the fortunes of the Verpine were reversed almost overnight with the outbreak of the Gulag Plague. Because of extensive trading in and out of Nickel One, it was one of the first locations in the Roche system to be hit by the epidemic.

Millions would soon perish, but the collectivist nature of Verpine society and their special form of instantaneous radio communication allowed them to quickly reorganize and bounce back from calamity. Drawing upon their experience creating advanced artificial habitats, the Verpine erected quarantine zones and developed sterilization protocols to limit the further spread of the virus. At the cost of trade, already meager at this point, external business was conducted on small orbiting stations designated as customs houses.

Eventually, Nickel One would be visited by bioengineers from from Kiribi, who assisted Verpine scientists in creating gene therapies to help the whole populous develop a resistance to the Gulag Plague.

By the 700s the Gulag Plague ceased to become a threat to the inhabitants of Nickel One. Quarantine protocols were relaxed, and focus shifted into rebuilding the local manufacturing sector as part of a system wide reconstruction effort.

As the Gulag era drew to the close, Nickel One became poised to retake its place as one of the great technology centers of the galaxy.

Enter Chaos

Nickel One became prosperous once more, fledgling galactic powers hungry for Verpine technology as they waged wars against each other. Intruder missiles were noted to be a particularly popular item for their immense destructive capabilities.

Sometime in the 830s Nickel One came under the umbrella of the now defunct Galactic Republic as the Verpine joined the interstellar federation. Relations between the Republic and Verpine started out as positive, the democratic race finding the Republic model appealing, but gradually became strained as the central government slowly unraveled from external and internal pressures through years of warmongering and rising corruption.

Nickel One’s relationship with the Galactic Republic would come to an abrupt end with the invasion of Roche by the United Clans, in response to the illegal seizure of private property of several prominent Mandalorians by a radical faction of the Republic known as the Selectivists, in the midst of attempting a coup to seize complete control of the central government and to nationalize all industry for the GR war machine.

For brief stint, Nickel One then came under the influence of the United Clans. While the Verpine government was wasn’t pleased with the GR, they weren't ecstatic about the unilateral actions of Mandalorian military, either. The issue of imminent domain had already been resolved by the time of the Mandalorian incursion, the Selectivists long ousted from power after their unsuccessful coup attempt.

However, the United Clans disbanded, and the Roche System became neutral once more. While the Verpine didn’t care much for the United Clans as a government, they liked Mandalorians as a people, having worked with them already for centuries. Thus Nickel One continued to serve as a prime destination for Mandalorian migrants and refugees escaping political turmoil from Mandalorian space.

In the late 840s, a new relationship would begin to blossom between the Verpine and Silver Jedi, through the budding friendship between the Mandalorian Verpine Sko’saht, and then Jedi Knight Arisa Yune. Ironically, the two had started out at fierce enemies, facing off against each other during the United Clan’s invasion of Kashyyyk. Years later, Sko’saht began work under the Silver Spacy as a contractor with his Verpine cohorts as opportunities in Mandalorian space dried up. Understandably, the Republic transplant was hesitant to be working with Sko’saht initially, but she grew to respect the Verpine from his professionalism and tactical prowesses as a field commander and warrior.

This would mark the beginning of extensive collaboration between the Verpine and Silver Jedi, fighting together across several campaigns against the Sith and Imperials. Perhaps their most famous team-up came at the First Order’s invasion of Skor II, where both the Silver Jedi and Verpine played a decisive role in repulsing the FO and saving the southern arm of GA space at the time.

Their partnership went beyond fighting, the Silver Order becoming one of Nickel One’s chief customers and investors as they ramped up their own military and industrial capabilities. This included the construction of joint factories and shipyards between the Verpine and the Silver Engineering Corporation. Extensive technology sharing also occurred between Verpine and affiliates of the SJO, as reflected in some curious designs such as the SK-01 Bobcat Interceptor.

Nickel One and the local economy as a whole would receive a great boon as Roche was chosen by the Silver Jedi as the site of construction for the Silver Order’s first true Dreadnought, The Shining Path. A significant portion of all Verpine engineers and shipwrights throughout Roche were involved in the process, and continue to be as more Dreadnoughts are constructed throughout Silver Space.

In addition to juicy defense contracts to Nickel One and other colonies, the Verpine government has benefited by joining in on a customs and currency union based within Silver Space, which includes several former GR planets already used to a high degree of political integration.
