Nest Class Carrier Corvette

19728.jpg

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
 • Intent: To create a carrier corvette for Firemane. This ship is basically just a floating hanger with little else to protect it or give offensive support. This ship’s one big strength is offset by multiple weaknesses if it’s ever attacked.

 • Speed Rating: Average,
 • Hyperdrive Class: 1
SPECIAL FEATURES
 • Can rapidly launch both squadrons as both sides of the ship has large hanger doors.
 • Can carry 1 squadron of fighters, interceptors, dropships, bomber, gunship or heavy dropship squadron.

Strengths:
 • Swarm. The Nest lives up to its name, carrying a squadron of attack craft. This is an unprecedented level of compact carrying capacity.
 • Flak. The Nest can defend itself quite well against enemy fighters and bombers with a hail of quad laser fire.
Weaknesses:
 • Unarmed. With only a single capital emplacement, the Nest is grievously underarmed and can’t even damage enemy corvettes.
 • Blocky. Essentially a floating hanger, the Nest is less able to evade enemy fire than other ships. If caught alone by even a heavy frigate it will be swiftly destroyed.
Description:

As part of Firemane’s operations they are often required to operate against pirates and raiders. Whilst the old Frontier Class was capable of doing this, Firemane researchers decided to take it to the extreme. What resulted is probably the ugliest ship in the galaxy, but also one of the most unexpectedly effective.

By essentially taking a box 80m long, 60m wide and 80m wide, then attaching a bridge and engines to it they ended up with a 100m ship able to carry an exceptional amount of attack craft. To increase this efficiency the vertical space is divided in two, with half a squadron on each level. This allows them to cram more attack craft into a small place than could be otherwise expected.

The compromises made though are many. The ship has only a single token capital emplacement, is slow and bulky and is cramped for the crew. On the other hand, it can unleash a full squadron of attack craft into any battle situation whilst still being able to keep up with escorts. They can also tactically be used to flank an enemy far easier than a capital ship carrier.
Tactical doctrine has these ships stay well back, launching their attack craft from far away and then staying out of danger. If caught without support by even a heavy frigate this ship has little chance of survival.

For what it is, the Nest is a brilliant means of delivering attack craft…so long as it never gets attacked itself!

Please place these under armament, as they are defensive weaponry and not the defenses (shields, armor, E-WAR) themselves.

Whilst I usually would agree with you and do this, there's something of a disconnect in the new template concerning how defence guns and armament link.

For instance, this ship has a single capital gun emplacement...that's 'very low' isn't it? In cases like this I feel the defence guns fit better under the defence banner.

Armament seems, through looking at the templates, mainly related to capital guns. If someone looks at this or the Guardian and sees 'Average' or 'Very High' armament and don't skim over the actual weapons it might cause some confusion.

I've discussed this with Raz a fair bit and we were ambivalent on where flak ships fit in the armament/defence stats. Is a ship capable of having high armaments when it has no capital guns? Seems counter intuitive.

However, you're the judge so if you insist I'll switch it around, but it just seems a bit odd.

You know what, you're right. I figured I would ask for the defensive weps in armament because that's how it's always been for me.

But...

Consistency starts somewhere and that's now, carry on.

I blame your spreadsheet for telling me it'd work. :p

I'm happy to drop it to 1 squadron at the existing production and length. Is that acceptable?
