Private Mock Battle over Umbara Preparation WIP

swm01_preview.jpg

Mock battle over Umbara (preparation)
The Imperial Confederation is at war. After their defeat at Brosi Admiral Squesha recognised the need for further experience in fleet warfare, and reached out to the Galactic Alliance, who are also at war. In a gesture of good faith and potential steps towards allies, a mock battle was agreed so both forces could hone their skills. The neutral world of Umbara was chosen as the battleground. The rules were clear.

  1. All weaponry be set to non lethal settings When possible Ion cannons should be used rather than lasers.
  2. No assasinations.
  3. Battle ends when one side has 75% of their forces out of commision, when 24 local hours have passed or when one side surrenders.
You may fire when ready.

FLEET ADMIRAL VORIN ZONILL
MIN REJUVENATOR
SPACE ABOVE UMBARA

It was a rather odd fleet that Admiral Zonill had assembled for the mock naval battle, but after his defeat at the Battle of Brosi, the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant was currently in the process of reorganizing its naval forces, meaning Zonill had to make do with what he had at the moment. With the Collateral Star currently undergoing repairs back on Mahporeem, Admiral Zonill had opted to instead bring a large number of smaller capital ships to make up the difference in size and firepower.

His current fleet arrangement consisted of a pair of Vilifier-class Star Destroyers, four Impressor-class Acclamators, ten CR125 Corvettes and a single Hardcelll-class Kamikaze Ship. This fleet arrangement would serve as a testing bed for future Mahporeenian naval formations, with the Impressors and CR125s being under particular scrutiny.

The Impressors had been specifically developed after the Battle of Brosi, as a correction for the Mahporeenian overreliance on fleet carriers. Admiral Zonill was rather excited to see how they would perform in this battle, as he was sure their armaments would prove more than adequate for their role as "pocket Star Destroyers".

The CR125s, on the other hand, had been something of a disappointment for the Imperial Remnant. As such, when Admiral Zonill heard word that a certain Ithorian was interested in purchasing the Mahporeem Imperial Navy's entire stock of the ships, he was certainly intrigued by the offer. Perhaps their was something that the MIN was missing about those particular ships that the enterprising Ithorian had seen? Or maybe he was just trying to relieve Mahporeem of their naval assets on the cheap?

This battle would help him find out.

Currently, his forces were split into two separate but balanced battle groups, with the odd Hardcell hiding at the back of his particular formation. Normally, that Hardcell would have been filled to the brim with Rhydonium to serve as a kamikaze ship, ramming itself into the most expensive enemy target before blowing up in a spectacular Rhydonium fueled explosion. Today, however, would only be a simulation, so Zonill would settle for the ship getting close to his opponent's flagship, perhaps near the bridge or engines.

Hopefully, this naval exercise would enable to regain some of the confidence that he had lost at Brosi, and perhaps give him some insight into the ships and fleet tactics of the Galactic Alliance. He eagerly awaited the rest of the combatants to show up as he went over the fleet composition of his battle group one final time...

Calin stood on the bridge of Unto The Breach. Not the Venator that had served him over Brosi, but the Kharon-Class Sector Battlecruiser that was newly christened for him. The jet black hull with orange accents spoke of his usual flair. It made finding him in a battle easy, but it gave his men a morale boost when his ship's huge bulk was gliding through the blackness of space.

"So now we're doing war games with the enemy, huh?" Calin said to himself.

"Sir?" a bridge officer asked.

"Nothing, Lieutenant. Ensure our weapons are set to non-lethal and that all skirmish AI settings are prepared."

"Yes, sir."

Calin's fleet, and by extension most ships nowadays, were equipped with advanced targeting equipment for skirmish battles. Some weapons, missiles and other kinetic projectiles couldn't really be set to non-lethal, for even an inert warhead could cause tremendous damage, so his ship would cast out data across the void to all other ships when his missiles and kinetic weapons fired. It showed what was fired, its trajectory, and would take into account the enemies defenses. At this point the enemy ships would absorb the target data and could determine the likelihood of a hit. It was extremely advanced dice rolling, but it was the only way to keep a skirmish intuitive.

Calin walked toward his new war table that adorned the bridge of the Kharon-Class cruiser. It stood near the forward view port of the Kharon, where Calin could look at the war table, but could turn his head and view into the void of space. It was large, this new table, approximately three meters by three meters, with holographics starting from waist height at the top of the table and rising another meter so the battle could be seen in three dimensions. Not really a battle, this.

Given his history, Calin wasn't thrilled to work with the Alliance Navy. But what was done was done, and he took it in stride. Plus, this allowed him to see how they would fight. So, in the future, if The Imperial Confederation decided to engage with the Alliance, he would be better prepared to destroy his foe.

Calin looked at his fleet as it hung lazily before him on the war table. Unto The Breach centered his fleet, a dagger pointing toward their foes, and surrounding it was a buzz of fighters and other ships. Two Vilifier-class Star Destroyers flanked Unto The Breach on either side, and in two four-ship wolf packs, Loki-class Corvettes prowled on the far perimeter of his fleet. Buzzing between his contingent, squads of TIEs, and several other craft.

Calin's strategy would be simple to see how it played out. He would use his heavy ships to batter down an enemy ship, separating it from its formations once its engines or hull was battered to the point it could no longer maneuver, and then the Loki's would swoop in and finish it off before returning out of reach. It would keep his fleet at a distance and allow the larger ships with heavier armor and shields to do what they were meant to: be the bedrock the enemy would break upon.

"Admiral's Zonill and Squesha, this is Rakel," Calin said over their encrypted comms, "I'm standing by and waiting for our...
skirmish...to begin."

Calin killed the comm and turned back to the war table, gazing as the Imperial assets floated in the void, waiting for the Alliance forces.

"Let us see what the Alliance has to offer," Calin said to no one in particular.

Admiral Squesha stood aboard the bridge of her flagship for this engagement, The Instigator. Her fleet stretched out before her, and she could see Admiral Zonil and Rakel's fleets on her flanks. Ever since the invasion Imperial morale had been low, especially amidst the navy. Squesha hoped this exercise would increase morale and restore confidence.

Squesha ran through the modifications to be sure they were non lethal. Laser weaponry had been set to disperse on contact with a ships hull, and kinetic weapons had their velocity slowed as to not be dangerous. Still her weapons were powerful enough that the enemy would surely know they were hit.

Speaking of the enemy this was the first time she would go up against the Galactic Alliance. While technically at peace with them the GA was the strongest faction in the galaxy, and the Confederation needed to be prepared incase they attacked. As well as boosting relations with the GA, this exercise was also a covert intelligence gathering mission, where her team of analysts would record every ship, every strategy and every weakness they presented. Knowledge was power after all.

They were late. Typical of the GA. No true sense of discipline, unlike the ordered Confederation. Perhaps thats why the Galactic Empire had managed to take the core. Squesha busied herself by conducting a status report.

"All ships sound off."

One by one her ships responded, reporting their ready status. In her fleet today she had brought one Indomitous class star destroyer, one Vilifier class star destroyer, one Tyrant IV class cruiser, two Celox class frigates, one Nebulon Fire class light carrier and her flagship, the Imperator class battlecruiser. A good mix of punch and flexibility, and the ability to tank hits while her fighters dealt crucial blows. But it would be in conjunction with her allied Admirals that the real strength of the navy would be shown. She opened up a comm line to them.
"Admiral's Zonill and Squesha, this is Rakel," Calin said over their encrypted comms, "I'm standing by and waiting for our...skirmish...to begin."
"Acknowledged. We are standing ready as well. Just because this is a training exercise doesnt mean we can become complacent. Lets fight as if our lives depend on it. Lets show those Alliance members the strength of Imperial Unity."

She closed the line. They would be here any minute. She watched he holoprojector carefully, confirming all the details of her plan. And waited for them to arrive.
