Private Missing Persons

(OOC: Location: Coruscant)

Overwatch-2-New-York.jpg

"Hey! Let me in Michel!"

Denna knocked furiously on the door of the apartment building she lived in. Of course, she spent the last few weeks gathering information of her landlord which naturally pissed him off. There had been reports of missing people within her apartment for the past few weeks which got Denna suspicious. The landlord who was always making sure that people pay the rent despite many rooms falling apart due to his stinginess was strangely indifferent to the disappearances. From Denna's investigation, many residents usually end up missing near the entry way of the apartment. One day, Denna found a twilek neighbor by the name of Ayasreku a dancer coming home from work. Denna tried to follow her but as soon as she turned the corner she was gone no signs of a struggle nor a trace. However he did find the Landlord who tried to bullchit his way out of it, but Denna didn't have any of it demanding to know where did Ayasresku went.

That was a few days ago though and ever since then, the Landlord was a bit on edge even declaring Denna a disturbance. "Come on!" Denna yelled slamming the door. "You can't just throw out of the streets like that! I live here you piece of chit!"

"Sorry Denna," the guard said. "I can't let you in, the landlord said you're making people feel uncomfortable."

"Oh, I'm making them feel uncomfortable?!" Denna yelled. "How about the fact that many people in the place I live in are starting to go missing."

She threw up her hands. "Yet the Landlord has yet to file a missing persons report to the police!" She growled. "Did you know he's even trying to sell off the apartment room?! Come on Michel! Why don't you think for once a fracking life?! If that chit eating idiot told you to jump off cliff would you do so?!"

"Bosses orders." Michel said. "I'm sorry Denna."

"Ugh!" Denna placed her hands on her hips trying to rack brain on what to do. Maybe she can try shooting her way in mix things up a little yet she's no soldier. There's gotta be a way back into her home.

“This guy keeping you out of you place boss?” Cirella Lorr waved as she approached her bosses apartment, and for some reason the focus of Deena’s newest investigation. She had heard some of the argument. “So pissed off your landlord so bad that he’s got you locked out?” Cirella gave a shake of her head.

She then turned her attention to Michel. “My pops is in Security Ops. You know that it is illegal to keep a paying resident from their belongings unless there is a present danger to their person.” Cirella waved her hand to hopefully have him wait for her to finish. “I know you’re just doing your job and following orders. I know you don’t have any authority to use that thing that sits atop your neck for anything other than repeating what the boss says. But, if you have me call one of pops’ friends and bring them down here that will be trouble for you and your boss. Can’t you just let me in so I can go collect my boss’ stuff? Then we’ll be out of your hair. I promise”

Deena turned around to see her assistant Cirella Lorr Cirella Lorr approaching her. Just recently, Deena was looking for an assistant considering that Deena was now an independent journalist due to the Confederacy's sudden collapse. After about a week of searching the Holonet where she met some unusual characters such as a drunken Dug who thought he was applying to be a merchant marine, a cyborg human who tried to hit on her, and a Rodian who may or may not be an agent from the SIA. As a journalist who likes to hunt the truth, paranoia was Denna's biggest ally.

"You hear that, Michel?" Deena said placing her hands on her hips. "You're gonna open the door? Or you gonna allow the biggest security ops on this level to come and make you?"

"Geez Deena!" Michel yelled throwing his hands up in the air. "I'll let ya in! I'm not getting paid enough to put up with this chit anyway."

"Thank you."

The door automatically opened while Deena instantly stepped inside making a beeline towards the elevator. "Thanks Cirella," she smiled. "You happen to have the Coffee I ordered do ya?"

Cirella had a proud smile on her face as the door was opened up and Michel stepped aside. She wanted to be a reporter like Deena, but she needed to learn how to do the job first. So coffee and lunch orders it was for the time being, for little more than the experience of looking over Deena’s shoulder while she worked. The pay was enough to keep a roof, meals and the other necessities of life, but an independent reporter, even Deena Mott couldn’t afford to make her assistant’s life comfortable.

“Coffee just as requested,” Cirella replied handing over the cup. At least she hoped it was just as requested. She ordered it right, but that barista didn’t look like she was all that capable.

“You think that guy will ever figure out that my dad’s a janitor?” Cirella asked with a sly smile. One thing she picked up really quickly about the investigative reporter gig was to bluff whenever you can to make a shortcut.

"Thank you very much," Deena paid Cirella a good wage for all the work she did. Going independent is a tall task you don't have that corporate Holonews money and the arsenal of carefully curated sources that go with it. All you have an independent journalist is your reputation and if audiences pick up that you're less than true to yourself, then they'll tune out. Deena made sure to always hunt the truth no matter how harsh it may be even if it contradicts whatever sources the mainstream media has to fit their own narrative.

"Disappearances are happening under my nose and my landlord is in the center of it all." Deena huffed taking sip while pushing the button to call the elevator. "I would say he's a suspect," Deena mumbled. "And all my journalistic senses say that he is, but the old fossil hates me for writing a less than savory review of his apartment."

It was the truth the apartment was poorly maintained and now the landlord is protecting a dark secret? It could be worth investigating though Deena didn't have any proof."

The elevator door opened, and Deena immediately walked in. Her mind dead set on wanting to know what happened to Ayasreku. "Hopefully the old man hasn't cleaned out her apartment," she said. "We need some evidence to know what happened to her."

“Ain’t nothin’,” Cirella responded to the thanks of her boss. “Tell a fib to get you access to what you want right? I’m sure you would have done the same thing if it weren’t your building an’ all.” Cirella had good instincts. That was probably why Deena hired her and kept her around, but her grammar was anything but front page ready.

Of course a good reason for that was probably that she hadn’t been to school for a day since she was seven. What she missed in formal education she made up for in learning the ways of the streets, and good old fashioned work ethic. She smiled as she listened to the mystery Deena wove for her ears.

“We’re breakin’ into someone else’s room?” Cirella questioned more with excitement than judgment. “Shoulda told me. I woulda brought my tools with me.” She shook her head and smiled. “Prolly not necessary. A place this old and unkept shouldn’t be hard to get through a door lock.”

Deena chuckled seeing the elevator reach its destination. "Of course, I would," she said stepping out and looking around the hallway. "Who else is gonna be my pack mule?"

She gave Cirella a wink before proceeding to the door of the apartment. "There she is," Deena reached for her pocket and taking out a slicer's card that she received from Rudy: A slicer from the lower floors of Courscant. His alias is Sparky, and he takes jobs from the SIA to even rebel cells in the Eternal Empire. Well, that was what Deena found out, but Rudy begged Deena not to report it promising to give her free Slicing tools. Deena took the deal but if Rudy did something that could compromise innocents well a juicy story is just waiting to be released.

"Rudy has come through with these gadgets," Deena smiled inserting the card through the slot. Part of the reason why Deena disliked her apartment building was how outdated it was. People now and days use biometric scanners to enter their rooms, but the landlord insisted on using this flimsy easily slicible card. It's little wonder why there's disappearances with technology as ancient as the cards.

As the door opened Deena slowly walked through the empty apartment room. There didn't seem to be signs of a struggle everything was intact. "Right, we're gonna have to look for any clues to Ayasresku's whereabouts." Deena said. "There HAS to be something here that investigators missed. So, let's get digging, shall we?"

Cirella followed Deena out of the elevator. She didn’t even know where her boss’ apartment was much less the one of the missing person that they were going to go searching. They stood at the doorway as Deena searched through her things. Finally bringing out some sort of slicing tool that Cirella was unfamiliar with.

“Rudy sounds like a good friend to have,” Cirella stated with a smile as the card was inserted into the door. The door opened easily enough and Deena stepped inside. Cirella gave one last look around the hallway. When she was sure no one had seen them break in she followed and closed the door behind her. Better to be locked in than to have someone walk up behind them undetected.

Since Deena probably had more tools from Rudy at her disposal Cirella started looking through Ayasresku's things. Maybe if she was living in an outdated apartment complex she might have some flimsi or other old way of keeping notes laying around with her plans or maybe she had a uniform from a job. Or maybe something would just stick out as being out of place.

"Let's see...." Deena walked towards the Twileak's Holocomputer and began to type. "The computer is asking me for a password," she mumbled to Cirella. "Go and check her kitchen for any notes, I'll look in the drawers in her room."

Deena wished she had her slicing equipment with her, but she wanted to get this investigation done quickly before the landlord comes back. She'll have to do this the old fashion way. The journalist headed to the Twileaks room opening drawers and searching through the items and papers before Deena came across a curious item. "What the-" a picture of the twileak was shown as well as what looked to be a Dug they were both smiling with the woman wrapping her arm around the Dug. The background looked to be a dance floor at a club somewhere. Coruscant had millions of clubs, Deena will need to start narrowing down the possible night clubs.

"The date on this pic shows this is pretty recent," Deena said looking at the corner. "About 4 days before she was abducted, I need to run a scan on this Dug maybe he knows something about her disappearance."

Finding nothing in the immediate area, Cirella followed Deena’s suggestion and made her way into the kitchen. It was small and didn’t really look like it was used much. The fridge was about empty, Cirella wasn’t quite sure what she was expecting to find in there, but some people attached notes to the outside so while she was looking what was the harm?

The counter was a bit of a mess. Didn’t look like Ayasresku used the garbage shoot as often as she should have. Cirella moved stuff around a little disgusted to go item by item. A piece of flimsy fell out of the pile with a single word written on it. There was a bit of a smudge, or it was written in Ryl or something that made it not understandable by Cirella.

As she returned to the main room of the apartment she saw Deena had something in her hands. “Found something?” Cirella asked with a smile. “I have no idea if this will be a password. But one word on a flimsy seemed to stick out. Maybe you’re eyes are better than mine to make out what it says though.”

Cirella walked in carrying a small slip between her fingers. Deena was busy examining the picture before Cirella spoke. “Oh!” Deena said jumping a bit assuming that it was the landlord. “I’ll try this out,” Deena handed Cirella the picture. “Take a look at this,” She said. “Ayasresku is with a wealthy looking Dug. The pic is about 4 days prior to her disappearance.”

The journalist quickly walked by her assistant while making a beeline towards the Holocomputer. “Maybe that Dug knows something,” She said. “After we’re done here, I need you to run a scan on the pic. Give me a name and that place where he and Ayrasresku were hanging out.

At least they have something of a lead. Deena read the note that Cirella gave her, it’ was tough to read with all the smudges, but Deena could make out the word: Love tap it was in Ryl symbols but Deena learned about the language while she was in University.

“All right let’s see here…..” Deena said typing in the password. After a half second of waiting, she got access.

“Awesome!” Deena smiled at Cirella. “Good work!” She said. “Now let’s see what she has.”

“Sorry didn’t mean to sneak up on you,” Cirella apologized for her intrusion. She grinned when Deena took the piece of flimsi and didn’t immediately discount it as trash. The grin grew wider when Deena shared her own discovery of a photo of the Twi’lek they were looking for and some Dug at some sort of club. The young assistant wished she had more time and money to spend out on the town. She could probably be a couple years older too, but that wouldn’t have been that big of an issue. If she was out and about more maybe she would be more help identifying the Dug or the club.

“I’ll run this photo now,” Cirella responded. She always kept her datapad nearby and since Deena was always looking into something Cirella had her datapad loaded up with all public files. She held up the photo and scanned it with her datapad. Then punched a few buttons and the search was started.

Another grin appeared on Cirella’s face as the flimsi produced results. She looked over Deena’s shoulder to see what was on Ayrasresku’s computer, while also watching the progress of the search on her data pad. After a few moments the data pad beeped. “Nothing on the Dug yet,” Cirella frowned. “But identified the club,” she turned the data pad for Deena to see.

"Let's see....." Deena took Cirella's datapad and scanned the results. GlitterGlow Nightclub Deena smirked handing the datapad back to Cirella. "Been there a couple of times. It's one of many places that Courscant's worst gather around and talk about business from spice, slavery, corrupt politics all that jazz. It's also a hotbed of journalistic scoops."

Deena smiled remembering how many criminals she exposed by just offering them drinks. To say she wasn't popular would be a massive understatement. "We'll head there later on, but I'm guessing there's a couple of Dugs who hang out there. It's favorite place among them due to the owner being a Dug himself."

She accessed the Holocomputer spotting files including encrypted message. "I'm gonna upload the data on my pad," Deena said taking out her datapad. "I'll analyze the contents at my apartment."

“Slavery?” Cirella questioned. She knew all too well that spice and political corruption was present on Coruscant, but slavery wasn’t supposed to be allowed. “I understand that you have to go to low places to get some of your stories. But how can we support a place that turns a blink eye to slavery? That’s just fracked.”

Cirella gave a shrug. “You’re the boss. Maybe a few questions will get us some answers. I can get my equipment and run facial recognition against the photo you found. Even if no one admits to knowing what happened to the Twi’lek girl. We might still be able to find the guy in the picture.”

Cirella frowned and looked around. “Your apartment? Weren’t you thrown out? What’ll you do if the landlord comes and finds you?” Cirella shook her head. “My place is pretty small but we could probably both hole up there until we can figure out what’s going on and figure out a better way to get you into your apartment than threatening the doorman with security that we both know isn’t coming here.”

"You would be surprised how many times I've reported the place," Deena sighed. "The owners got important senators in their pockets plus ever since the last piece I wrote on them, I had a large price on my head. Larger than even criminals wanted on 12 systems."

Deena wore it like a badge of honor though, you're not a journalist if you're not pissing off the right people. Cirella on the other hand, Deena wasn't so sure if she wanted that life for her. She was eager though so Deena brings her when necessary but still she can handle all of the threats and assassination attempts. Cirella on the other hand well Deena hoped that she wouldn't through the lengths that she did for her own safety.

"I'm not thrown out," Deena said gritting her teeth. "I still pay rent but the landlord is just being a pain in the ass so why don't you identify the Dug will ya? My pad is being slow again.

“Senators of the Federal Assembly are getting in the way of people trying to rid the planet of slavers?” Cirella questioned showing her naivety. Cirella knew many of the bad things that happened in the galaxy. And she knew that a lot of them took place on Coruscant. It was a big planet with a lot of people. But she always thought the Federal Assembly was looking out for people and stayed within the rules. “I guess I would be surprised how many times you’ve reported them. You’re going to let me help right? I know it’s dangerous. But I can still do my part.”

Cirella could sense there was a pause in Deena. Cirella knew that she was young and probably didn’t want all the problems that came along with being a journalist like Deena, but Cirella also knew that she didn’t want to be someone reporting on celebrity gossip or being manipulated by powerful people to get the story they want the public to hear out into the open.

“Paying rent and not being allowed in is pretty crappy if you ask me,” Cirella said with a smirk. “You’d be better off getting tossed out and finding a new place if you ask me.”

Cirella’s pad was working slowly as well, but hadn’t stopped searching for the identification of the people in the photo. Cirella smiled proudly as a chime came from her data pad. “Dug’s name is Besis Gisana,” she announced with a shrug. “Means nothing to me. I know big surprise. You know him from anywhere?”
