OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Micians (Shi'idese: "Nomads")
  • Designation: Sentient
  • Origins: Lao-mon
  • Average Lifespan: 500 standard years
  • Estimated Population: Planetary; they are widespread and numerous enough that most Shi'ido have likely encountered a Mician at least once within their lifetime.
  • Description: The Micians are a Shi'ido ethno-cultural group (or "clan"). They take the form of pale or gray-furred winged humanoids with a moth-like appearance.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Breathes: Type I
  • Average Height of Adults: Varies
  • Average Length of Adults: N/A
  • Skin color: Varies; most tend to be gray or an off-white color.
  • Hair color: They are often covered in a soft, pale or gray "fur" in addition to feathery antennae sprouting from their heads.
  • Distinctions: As a “race” of the Shi’ido, Micians are primarily differentiated by their moth like appearance, including wings, antennae, and other insectoid features. They have typical humanoid distinctions between the sexes; males are generally larger with denser bones, while females are smaller and lighter. Wing size is dependent on mass, which results in females often having smaller or shorter wings than males.
  • Races: N/A
  • Force Sensitivity: Standard; while all Shi'ido likely have some form of Force sensitivity, as evidenced by their natural telepathy, most lack the potential to become Jedi or Sith.
Strengths:
  • Flight: Most mature Micians are capable of flight. This is the result of carefully forming and training their bodies to adapt to flying, a process which often takes years and which is taught rather than an innate instinct. While particularly experienced and skilled Micians can cross long distances by air, most can only travel in short bursts, especially if they are traveling in groups.
  • Light of Foot: Out of necessity, Micians have lighter/less dense skeletons, which also tends to make them more agile and quick.
Weaknesses:
  • Pain Is Of the Mind: Compared to other clans, Micians have been observed to harbor a low pain tolerance and a slight vulnerability against mental assaults. They don't handle torture well and can easily fall victim to various methods of brainwashing, particularly those employed by Force Users.
  • Tramps and Thieves: Micians have long be viewed with suspicion by other groups, who believe their nomadic lifestyle leads to thievery, crime and immorality. While this is a stereotype and not true of all Micians... it is admittedly quite common for them to be involved in criminal activities, usually theft and other non-violent offenses. Culturally, they don't put much importance or value on possessions; resources and property among the Micians belong to everyone in their community, not to individuals, so in some cases incidents of theft may be the result of a misunderstanding.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Omnivore; much of their diet and cuisine is based on what can be preserved and carried with them while traveling. They tend to eat dry food or food that does not spoil easily.
  • Communication: The Micians have their own dialect of Shi'idese which has been described as "halting, staccato speech".
  • Technology level: Galactic Standard
  • Religion/Beliefs: To'polism
  • General behavior:
    • The Nomads: The Micians are a nomadic people who primarily roam the southern provinces, though they may be found further north as well. They move from town to town, city to city, flying for most of the journey. They live simple lives, often hand-to-mouth, and place little value on their possessions.
    • Becoming a Mician: A Mician is not born, but made - anyone can join their clan, although they are wary of outsiders. Their appearance is a form of cultural self-expression rather than a genetic marker; they use their shapeshifting abilities to make themselves look a certain way, and to develop wings capable of flight. If one no longer wishes to be considered Mician, they must remove their wings or alter them so that they look significantly different. Deliberately cutting off a Mician's wings is considered humiliating and a traumatic loss of identity; it was once a common form of exclusionary punishment, a sign that one had been shamed and/or banished from the clan.
    • The Clan: Micians tend to put far more emphasis on loyalty to their clan than other Shi'ido do. One of the first things they will ask a stranger upon meeting them is what their clan is. While it is dependent on the individual, some may have tribalistic viewpoints and tendencies, with an "us vs. them" attitude towards non-Micians.
    • Death From Above: Micians developed a unique fighting style which incorporates flight into melee combat, swooping and diving to dispatch enemies on the ground below and evading strikes by darting through the air.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Micians are believed to have originated in the province of Rhamnusia on Lao-mon. They have a legend which traces their history to an orphaned, clanless warrior woman named Micia who taught herself how to fly in order to take advantage of larger, stronger opponents. Micia went on to found a clan of her own, called the Micians in her honor. Whether or not this story is true is up for debate, as there are no written documents or records from the period which would prove that Micia even existed.

What is known is that the Micians have existed as a people for thousands of years, distinguished by their mothlike appearance. In previous ages they were looked upon with suspicion by other clans, though they were often hired as mercenaries by various armies. The Micians were among the victims of the "Great Purge" of 738 BBY, which saw the killing of nearly a quarter of the total Mician population on Lao-mon. They have since bounced back, though the event left a stain on their cultural memory.
