Maizono's Field Tests: Plasma Cannons

Day - 1
Test - 1

Objective:

Test the power consumption of the plasma cannon.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is connected to a small battery (ammunition source), and activated. The power consumption upon activation is monitored.

Result:

Plasma cannon failed to activate. Battery depleted.

Notes:

I can safely say this weapon will require a high amount of energy to bring online, let alone fire. Tomorrow a larger battery will be used, and the test repeated

Day - 2
Test - 2

Objective:

Test the power consumption of the plasma cannon.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is connected to a large battery (ammunition source), and activated. The power consumption upon activation is monitored.

Result:

Plasma cannon failed to activate. Battery depleted.

Notes:

The battery seems to deplete almost immediately. The cannon flashed for a moment, meaning we are getting closer to finding the right amount to activate it. A second test will be conducted today, using 20 more batteries to see how long the cannon stays activated.

Day - 2
Test - 3

Objective:

Test the power consumption of the plasma cannon.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is connected to 20 large batteries (ammunition source), and activated. The power consumption upon activation is monitored.

Result:

Plasma cannon activated for 7 seconds. Battery depleted.

Notes:

We'll be plugging the weapon into an imported mobile power generator next week.

Day - 7
Test - 8

Objective:

Test the power consumption of the plasma cannon.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is connected to a mobile power generator and turned on.

Result:

Plasma cannon activated. Generator burnt out after 11 minutes.

Notes:

We managed to get the generator to provide power for the cannon, but not for very long. The immense strain on the generator caused it to fuse and eventually blow, but then again it was but a civilian grade generator. We will be using two military grade generators in our next test.

We'll be plugging the weapon into an imported mobile power generator next week.
Day - 13
Test - 21

Objective:

Test the power consumption of the plasma cannon.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is connected to six military grade power generators, and activated. The power consumption upon activation is monitored.

Result:

Plasma cannon remained active for a half an hour. Generators turned off for much needed maintenance.

Notes:

Thirty minutes is not enough time to keep the weapon running, also considering we haven't even fired the thing yet. Also the generators were about to break down and needed to be replaced in the long run.

#Update

We managed to fix a power leakage. The gun doesn't seem to strain the generators anymore, but I fear they will break once we fire it.

Day - 21
Test - 44

Objective:

Test the power consumption of the plasma cannon.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is connected to a dedicated power generators, and activated. The power consumption upon activation is monitored.

Result:

Plasma cannon remained active.

Notes:

Success! We decided to ditch the generators we bought and made our own. The generators had overheating problems. With some coolant and new numidium paneling the generators managed to stay active all the way through the night, until we turned them off. The results are being analyzed. We should be moving on to our second phase next month.

Day - 26
Test - 23

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma cannon to superheat the gas ammunition.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is activated and the ammunition is fed into the cannon, the gas is then superheated. Results monitored.

Result:

Gas canisters exploded. Damage control team brought in. No injuries.

Notes:

Apparently the equipment was mass handled, causing a gas leak. The gas exploded after it was turned into plasma. The plasma explosion completely melted the entire cannon. But hey! the superheating process worked! It's gonna take another week to bring in a second cannon. This time the tubes connected to the weapon and the gas cannon will be more reinforced.

Day - 34
Test - 28

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma cannon to superheat the gas ammunition.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is activated and the ammunition is fed into the cannon, the gas is then superheated. Results monitored.

Result:

The tubes feeding the gas into the cannon melted.

Notes:

Phewy! We managed to turn the gun off and before the gas could actually escape and explode once again! Who knew plasma was so hot? But in all seriousness we need a more effective material to prevent the weapon from just melting, and in light of this we're bringing in some more numidium. This thing is getting incredibly expensive.

Day - 55
Test - 41

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma cannon to to discharge a bolt of plasma.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is activated and the ammunition is fed into the cannon, and fired into an empty field.

Result:

Cannon exploded

Notes:

More setbacks. After finally getting the tubes to stop melting, we can't seem to control the plasma as it fires. Instead the plasma exploded as soon as the trigger was pulled, completely vaporizing the entire turret. Good thing it's remotely activated, everyone working near it would've died.

Our scientists are working on a way to direct the energy instead of simply shooting 'it out'. Right now it seems they are thinking of firing canisters filled with plasma than explode on contact, which isn't a very bad idea. My only issue is that particle shields will simply deflect it. I love the properties of plasma as is, like the ability to bypass shields. We are gonna ditch the canister idea I'm hoping

Day - 55
Test - 47

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma cannon to fire plasma.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is activated and the ammunition is fed in and fired.

Result:

The cannon exploded.

Notes:

Every new test results in us having to bring in another gun. When we fired the plasma cannon, it simply exploded. Apparently we can't find a way to discharge the plasma in a particular direction. The scientists are looking for ways to direct the energy, and one of their theories involves firing a shell with the plasma in it, which isn't a bad idea, but particle shields will simply negate that. I like the plasma the way it is, and how it's able to pass through all conventional shielding.

Hopefully they'll get this done soon.

Day - 72
Test - 48

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma cannon to fire plasma.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is activated and the ammunition is fed into the cannon and fired.

Result:

Plasma fired from the cannon.

Notes:

I took them a while to figure this out. We used magnetism to keep the plasma controlled as it was fired, and success! It worked! We fired the gun and bolt of shining white/blue plasma shot out from the barrel, it was gone in an instant! It was so fast! Next we know a hill on the other side of the field was completely black and smoking. We will be conducting more tests of the next two months to test for any more faults.

Day - 138
Test - 92

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma to damage different materials.

Execution:

The plasma cannon fires at the hull of an old freighter.

Result:

Freighter was destroyed.

Notes:

Our first test on anything other than an open grass field went really well. We bought a rusted Corellian freighter and placed at a distance of three kilometers and fired at it! Pinpoint accuracy! With the help of our new gun predictors we can theoretically hit anything at any distance. The freighter was completely gone by the time we moved up to examine it. Well there were so melting chunks of it still lying around, but most of the ship was fried.

I cannot wait to see what we can destroy next!

#Update

The Admiral seems to be a bit curious about my mental health. To bad he never gets a chance to witness the tests, otherwise he'd excuse my excitement.

Day - 150
Test - 98

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma to damage different materials.

Execution:

The plasma cannon fires at a mountain side.

Result:

Mountain collapsed.

Notes:

The environmentalists were to happy with us for literally leveling the largest mountain on the planet, but the citizens were excited to see it explode. Apparently in local folklore the mountain is haunted by an ancient evil or something, and that one day a god would come and destroy the place.

Either Way this weapon proves useful as a ground cannon, but far more powerful than expected. It's most definitely NOT a precision weapon. This thing will burn cities with only a couple of shots.

Day - 201
Test - 134

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma to damage ships in space.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is mounted aboard a warships and fired at old starships.

Result:

Several old starships destroyed.

Notes:

Today was our first test in space, and we went to Kuat for this. One of the planets in the system is a junkyard for all starships. We mounted the weapon aboard a troop transport and fired at remotely at some old ships. As expected, the plasma performed FAR better in space. It travelled faster and was way more accurate. We destroyed six freighters and an old frigate, spending mere seconds on each target.

Day - 181
Test - 124

Objective:

Test the ability of the plasma to bypass shields

Execution:

The plasma cannon fires at moving shielded freighters.

Result:

Freighters destroyed.

Notes:

This was a bit hard to pull off since even the smallest freighters costed quite a lot to buy. They were powered up and piloted by droids, who flew them around in space. We received new gun directors to help with the aiming system and they work pretty great. Once the droids powered up the droids, we tried to electronically guide the cannon and fire it at the target. Success! Camera footage closely showed that the plasma phased right through the deflector shields of the starships and destroyed them!

Day - 160
Test - 101

Objective:

Test the maximum range and speed of the plasma cannon.

Execution:

The plasma cannon is fired into space. The distance and speed is measured.

Result:

Speed measured was equal to 6km/s. Maximum range until dissipation is 9000km.

Notes:

With a velocity of 6km/s and a range of 9000 kilometers, this has turned out way better than I've predicted!

Final entry

I can safely say this weapon will become a great success in when it begins mass production! The rate of fire, combined with it's ability to pass through shields and it's devastating effectiveness as an anti-ship weapon will make any naval commander jealous they can't yet get their hands on it.

I cannot wait until we try this on a real warship.
