Lessons Learned From The Mist-Walkers

***** [member="Ghorua the Shark"] 's Nightmare *****

Funny how in some dreams, one thinks that they are awake. They do all of the same things as they would in life, eating, watching the holo-vids and even prepare to sleep. In this particular dream, Ghorua found himself getting ready for bed. He did all of his usual things and slipped under the covers, completely unaware that he was already asleep.

And then he felt something. His heart began to race and a cold chill quickly ran through his body. It was a familiar feeling, but one that he couldn't remember had caused it before. His eyes snapped open to look for any threat. But he couldn't see any. All that he saw was the darkened room that he normally slept in.

So he attempted to roll over, discovering then a reasoning behind his growing fear. He was unable to move. It wasn't as though he was paralized. No. It was as though an invisible force was holding his behemoth figure down.

And then came their voices, whispering louder and louder, engulfing him in that one word that was repeated on a constant loop, "..Consecration.." And as the sounds began to surround him, a mist or thick fog began to fill the room. Flashes of light revealed the shadows of what he had encountered on that mining platform in Bespin; the Mist-Walkers.

And then that same force that held Ghorua down had begun to lift him from the bed. Still he couldn't move and like a plank he was drifting up towards the ceiling. As he was a few feet off of the bed, the ceiling above him began to bubble, turning almost into a liquid that did not fall. Hands soon appeared, then arms and finally the faces of the Mist-Walkers, ready and waiting to pull Ghorua through the ceiling and into their awaiting ship.

It was then that Ghorua would struggle even more, trying to break the invisible bonds that held him, until he let out a frightened scream. It worked. The Herglic dropped back down onto the bed and was once again able to move.

And now.....he was awake.

LOCATION: THE SHARK'S APARTMENT, NAR SHADDAA
CURRENT EQUIPMENT: NIGHTWEAR
CURRENT MOOD: TERRIFIED

Ghorua's apartment complex was less than ideal. The place had a lingering smell of unpleasant things, something Ghorua often tried to mask with the scent of Sapir tea. It didn't work very well. The only upside the place had was that it was sized for larger folk. Of course, everything was still small to the ten-foot-tall goliath. Even in the oversized bedroom, with his oversized bed, recliner, lamp, and holo-player, he felt like a bumbling Wookiee. He had small things to make him feel more comfortable in the setting. A constant holorecording of swimming beasts flickered along the walls, their calls relaxing and quiet. Even though he hadn't grown up, or even been to Giju, the Herglic home planet, something in his genes was calmed by the sound.

Ghorua was getting ready for bed, in his usual fashion. He fed Bones, pouring a tasteless kibble into her bowl, which she hungrily feasted upon. He smiled. At least there was one being on this planet that truly cared about his existence. Next, he undressed for bed, removing his wifebeater. Black muscles rippled, marred by poorly-healed blaster shots, and a luminescent white tattoo along his shoulder. He climbed under his silken black sheets, and tried to drift into sleep. His calm would-be slumber was interrupted by a feeling of cold, one he couldn't quite place.

Ghorua tried to roll towards the entrance, to survey his surroundings, but found that he was locked in place. He strained every muscle in his body, exerting an extreme amount of force, but nothing happened. Then he heard the relaxing murmuring of sea creatures morph into voices, and his mind froze.

"... Concecration... Concecration..."

Blood began pulsing through his body, and adrenaline rushed into his system. He strained even more. No... NO!

He saw the clawing hands of the Mist-Walkers reaching for him through a tumultuous ceiling, and his body began to lift. Ghorua's mind snapped.

The Blood Frenzy was unleashed, and Ghorua let out a scream. Ghorua hadn't remembered ever screaming in his entire life, but the shriek he let out rattled the room around him. And then he was pulled, out of his nightmare, and into the real world.

============================================================================================

Ghorua sat up quickly, hands grasping at something, anything. They finally rested on the sides of his bed, the wood splintering under his grasp. The Herglic's body was caked in nervous sweat, and his muscles quivered with exertion. A dull banging came from the apartment next door, along with annoyed grunting in Shyyriwook, most likely something along the lines of 'shut up'. Ghorua grasped his head, feeling his Blood Frenzy eek out of him. He groaned as he realized what had happened. He had experienced this exact dream multiple times before. Enough was enough.

The Herglic stood, swaying with exhaustion. Bones trotted in, whimpering nervously. Ghorua gave the beast a small smile, patting her spines. He reached for his datapad, and sent a message.

//TO: [member="Lady Kay"]
FROM: SHARK
Good day to you, Mi'lady. I'm going to be stopping by your fabulous castle in a day or so.
We need to talk.//

After deciding the message was cryptic and light-hearted enough, he sent it to the Lady. Next, he called up a number, and waited for the person on the other side to answer.

"Ugh, yeah... Who is this...?" The grunting voice of a Whippid could be heard from the other side.

"Look alive, soldier." Ghorua smiled to himself as he heard startled shuffling from the other end. His henchmen from the Goliath Company were still learning, it seemed. "You're watching Bones for the weekend."

"Sir yes sir!" The Whippid, who's name was something along the lines of Ghurl, or Gharl, spoke in a forced monotone voice.

"Good. And lighten up. I'm not going to eat you. Unless you really deserve it." Ghorua laughed at the obvious tensing from the other side. It was a joke he often used with his men.

"Uh, yeah, yeah..." Ghorua tapped off the comms, and tried to fall asleep again. He would leave for the Lady in the morning.

Kay was enjoying her tea and going over her messages, when a new one popped up. It was from [member="Ghorua the Shark"] .That caught her by surprise. She hadn't seen the Herglic since her inauguration. And even then it was for a brief moment. He had given his congratulations and then tossed her the most wonderful of gifts; her lightsaber crystal. Time had passed since then and with the help of [member="Veiere Arenais"] , she had constructed a new lightsaber for it, one that hopefully would never get stolen. Kay typed up her response:

~Good to hear from you, my friend. I hope that all is well. Looking forward to your visit. I'll inform security so that you can come in without any third degree questioning. Safe travels.

Kay~

She didn't use any of her titles when she signed off on it. She rarely did for personal messages to her friends. They were her friends afterall. Kay sent the message off and then did as she said she would, she informed the building's security, as well as those guarding the planet from orbit.

Hopefully nothing was wrong....

- 1 DAY LATER -

The Whalebone landed in the spaceport, old servos squeaking. Ghorua knew he needed to purchase a new ship soon, but the Herglic had put time and sweat into his old cargo ship. Given, it had never been built to accommodate his size, and the model was extremely old, so the Shark was willing to part with it.

Security codes sent, Ghorua was happy to see the usual inspection waived for his arrival. Kay sure knew how to pull strings. Being the leader of an entire planet had that effect.

Ghorua exited his ship, wearing a tuxedo fit to him. He rarely broke it out, but he felt as if this were an appropriate time. Besides, he could still keep his two slugthrowers and vibroknife handy, and look fashionable. It wasn't like he was helpless, but the formal attire would surely put minds at ease. The port guards raised their eyebrows at him, but made no attempt to halt his progress into the city.

After peacefully strolling through the large settlement, Ghorua finally came across the palace. It was ornate, rounded, beautiful. The Shark thought back to his apartment, and chuckled to himself. The two acquaintances' places of residence were just as different as their owners. Guard's eyes bugged out of their heads when they saw the massive figure walk up to them, bowing. "Gentlemen, if you could please inform the president that the Shark is here to see her, that would be lovely." The guards quaked in their boots, not used to a large individual like Ghorua. Finally, one croaked some affirmation, and went to alert the Lady.

Kay just had to laugh when the announcement came in that [member="Ghorua the Shark"] had arrived. The manner of which it was relayed to her was rather comical. The Herglic was quite intimidating, yet even though others knew that he was coming, that still didn't seem to put them at ease.

Instead of having him led to her office, she went ahead to greet him herself in the foyer. Kay hadn't seen him since her inauguration speech and he had ran away before she could properly thank him for his gift.

It was easy to spot him in the distance. She smiled brightly as she approached. Instead of just bowing her head, Kay walked right up to him and gave him as big of a hug as she could. "Lovely to see you again, my friend. I hope you had a good trip here. Shall we go to my office? I have some tea brewing."

As he waited to be escorted to the Lady, Ghorua amused himself by terrifying the remaining guard. He smiled at the man, showing rows of serrated teeth. The guard blanched.

Ghorua did this for the next few minutes, until he heard the sound of small feet. Ghorua turned from his self-amusement, and smiled genuinely. He began his usual introduction, full of nonchalant gusto. "A pleasure to see you, Mi'la..."

The Shark stopped his sentence abruptly as he felt her wrap around his waist. Ghorua tensed under the contact. In all of Ghorua's memory, he had never been hugged. Even as a child with his family, physical contact was kept to a minimum. When he scraped his knees, he was taught to tough through the pain, to take it like a man. Hugs were never in the equation. The Herglic felt a surge of warmth blossom from the contact, and returned the gesture the best he could, layering his own massive arms over her.

Ghorua chuckled to himself, and nodded in agreement. "That would be lovely."

"My friend."

Kay felt the tension as she hugged him. But then she felt it melt away as [member="Ghorua the Shark"] 's body relaxed and returned the hug. She smiled and then let go after a moment, not wanting to linger for too long in the foyer. "Great. My office is this way."

While she led the Herglic down the hallway, she couldn't help but laugh quietly in amusement at the looks on the guards' faces. If they ever thought that Kay was just a meek woman, then their opinions were soon changed as they saw her hugging the beast of a man.

It wasn't long until they reached her office. The guards stood still at their posts. These two weren't as timid as the others. Kay opened the doors and led Ghorua inside. The smell of Sapir tea instantly hitting their noses. "Perfect timing. Tea's ready. Make yourself comfortable while I pour our cups."

On the coffee table she had the hilt of her newly constructed lightsaber. The ornate design of it however, made it look more like a decoration instead of the functioning weapon that it was.

Ghorua followed the Lady, arms crossed happily in front of him. Despite what he had to discuss with her, Ghorua was genuinely glad to be in the presence of Kay. She had that kind of personality.

They finally made it to Kay's office. The scenery was quaint, rustic. Something not often seen on Nar Shaddaa. With the setting, guards, who seemed much more seasoned than the boys out front. Perhaps the others were new hires. Either way, these soldiers didn't so much as flinch when the Shark tipped an imaginary hat.

When he was told to do so, Ghorua tried to relax. He was almost positive none of the chairs in here would bear his wait, so he sat cross-legged on the floor, across from where the President would sit. Absentmindedly, he glanced around the room, noting a small cylindrical device on the coffee table. His eyes widened slightly as he saw the lightsaber.

The hilt was artistic to a tee, as if the weapon was supposed to be a mantelpiece over a fire. Ghorua felt a sudden pang of nostalgia, and looked away quickly, trying to pretend he hadn't seen it. That tiny saber crystal had a complicated history with the Shark, and he didn't need a reminder of it right now.

Kay had her back turned when [member="Ghorua the Shark"] sat down on the floor, though she could feel the floor tremble a little as he sat. With a cup in each hand, she turned and chuckled a little to herself and then handed him his tea. She then sat down in her own chair and had a sip from her cup. "You left before I got to thank you for your gift. You don't know how much it means to me. And it wasn't even tainted. Do you know how rare that is?" She leaned forward and placed her hand on his own that held the tea cup. "It means that despite all that's happened, deep down, you are a really good person. And I see that becoming more clearer every time we cross paths." Kay removed her hand and sat back in her chair again. "I am so very grateful to have you for a friend." Of course she was genuine. She really did value him and that was clearly written on her face.

Kay had another sip of her tea. "So, what do I owe the honour of this visit? Are you looking for work?" She would hire him on the spot if he was.

Ghorua nodded politely as he was handed tea, grinning as he realized the ridiculous proportions. The cup had been sized for a regular individual, and looked downright silly in the Herglic's palm. He sipped anyways, trying to ration the meager supply.

Ghorua smiled apologetically as Kay spoke of her coronation. He shrugged his shoulders, a heavy hauum escaping his blowhole. He was about to respond when she continued, resting her small hand on his. She spoke of him being a good person. Ghorua averted his eyes, opting to stare down at the lightsaber on the table.

Was he a good person? His title, the Shark, might say otherwise, as would his history. In his brief time in the galaxy, he had killed too many to count on the field of battle. He had befriended and worked for Sith, who were not known for being good. He had captured innocents like the Lady, all for the pursuit of money. Yet, the crystal had not been tainted. What did that mean?

Ghorua's uncomfort was obvious as he took another sip from his comically-sized tea cup. "I'm by no means a good person, Mi'lady. Our first encounter can attest to that." The Shark balled his fist under the table, relaxing a little as the President offered him a job. "Perhaps we can discuss work later. But that's not why I'm here." Ghorua's mood soured slightly.

He tried to cultivate a tired smile, to lighten the mood, and spoke, his deep voice flowing like honey. "I was wondering, with your resources as Queen of the world..." Ghorua let a brief laugh escape him, almost forced. "... If you had researched... the incident on Bespin. I've tried to pull strings, figure out what those things were. No luck." His last statement betrayed his inner thoughts. He felt helpless, a state of being that the Herglic did not enjoy.

Ghorua had tried to find something, anything on those monsters, to little avail. He had pulled every Underworld string he had, but no one seemed to have anything for him at all. He had lost sleep. Lots of sleep.

It was strange to be so large, yet feel so small.

Kay knew plenty of good people that have done far worse than what she knew [member="Ghorua the Shark"] may have done. And she was still friends with them, even family. Just because she was a goody two-shoes, it didn't mean that everyone that she cared for was.

She smirked as Ghorua called her a Queen. She was far from that. Yet his inquiry gave her pause. Kay sipped her tea, hearing of all of the different avenues that he's gone in order to try to get information. So this why he was here. After all that they had been through, especially him, it wasn't too surprising to learn that he was trying to make sense of it all. Or to exact revenge.

"Being a President of a trade world doesn't open up as many doors as you might think. Only the access to our ports is what most care for. And the First Order are very tight lipped about the whole incident. I get asked from time to time if I remember any other detail, so I'm guessing that they know less than we do. " She frowned a little as she recalled what happened and that she had to actually kill a few of them. Though she had to keep telling herself that it was all in self defence. Which it was. But to take a life like that wasn't easy. Kay sipped her tea. "There is much that we don't know about Bespin, so it isn't too surprising that a sentient species had remained hidden in the mists. Have you tried visiting similar planets and seeing if there were any mentions of creatures like them?"

Ghorua sipped his tea thoughtfully, frowning as he finished the drink. Barely enough to wet his tongue. Ghorua didn't ask for a refill, instead politely placing the small cup on the table, and listening to the President. His frown only seemed to deepen. He had come for answers, maybe solace from one that had went through a similar experience. All he had found so far, however, were musings and sapir tea.

"Well chit." Despite the fancy setting and attire, Ghorua couldn't keep his Courscanti underworld speech pattern out of his voice. "I was hoping the Order might have something for us. It is their planet, after all." The Shark noted Kay's frown, wondering briefly what was going on behind those bright eyes.

"I haven't done much on-site research." Ghorua's expression hardened, guarding his inner thoughts. "I've been busy ever since the incident, after all, and... Frankly, they give me the heebie-jeebies." The Herglic forced out a slight chuckle, but his black eyes betrayed a hint of truth in his words.

Ghorua was terrified of the Mist-Walkers. He had walked into their trap, with no plan, and no chance of survival. The Blood Frenzy, which Ghorua tried so hard to keep in check, escaped, and it had been his downfall. The only reason he was alive today was because of the small woman in front of him, whom had no real reason to come to his rescue. The experience had scarred him deeply. The creatures had become an embodiment of all of the Shark's fears: helplessness, death, weakness, the Frenzy, and strangely enough, mist.

Finally, Ghorua crossed his arms over his chest defensively, bracing himself for what was to come. "I... haven't been getting much sleep lately. I can't, knowing that those things are out there, you know?" Kay might notice the shallow bags under his eyes, a testament to newfound nightmares. "It's weird. I'll take on an entire army on my own without breaking a sweat, but these things..." Ghorua shuddered, obviously shaken. "I'm spooked." Ghorua laughed weakly to himself. "Heh, what would Julian think of me now, running with my tail between my legs?"

Kay understood [member="Ghorua the Shark"] 's frustration with the First Order's investigations. "You know what the First Order are like. They hide any weakness and if they don't know something, they'll pretend that it doesn't exist until they do learn all about it. But if I recall, they won't allow you into their territory without a permit as you are a hunter."

She set down her tea and then got to her feet, picking up Ghorua's cup for a refill. She didn't ask, she just assumed. After pouring in some more hot tea, she brought it back for him. What he had said, and the look in his eyes gave her much to be concerned for.

Instead of retaking her seat in the chair, Kay sat down on the floor right beside him. She reached over to her cup and picked it up, taking another sip. "They scared me too. And even though I was defending us, defending myself, I had to do what I've never done before.....I tried to reason with them, to see what they wanted...and they just...laughed." She shivered as she recalled that horrible sound. "I looked in one of the libraries here, but couldn't find anything on a creature similar to them." Which could mean that they weren't from here at all. "Do you think that they could have come here from the Netherworld?"

She wanted to know his thoughts on that. She'll address his sleeping problems soon enough.

Ghorua let a grin escape his dark exterior as Kay refilled his drink, and sat down next to him. As if they were children, playing with plastic cups and pots. Then she brought up the Netherworld, and Ghorua gained a slightly confused expression.

"I'm afraid I know next to nothing about the Netherworld. I hadn't left home yet, and none of my family had been... taken. I heard some pretty scary stories about it, though." At the time of the Netherworld crisis, Ghorua had still been a bodyguard for the Balin family's business. He tried to gloss over the subject of his family, quickly looking for another topic to jump to. "What do you know about the Netherworld? Is it possible they could come from such a place?"

Ghorua stared at the steam rising from his tea, frowning as is roiled and dissipated into the air. Different jokes started running through his head, to alleviate the stress of the situation, but he decided against using any of them. Sometimes, it payed to be serious. And if the Netherworld was a possible lead, Ghorua would like to explore it.

- [member="Lady Kay"] -

To Kay, both herself and [member="Ghorua the Shark"] were equals. She wasn't his President, nor his boss. They were merely two people with a shaky start to their friendship. All of that past was forgiven though. Ghorua needed her help and she was going to put in every effort to help him.

She sipped her tea. "I was hiding out in exile when the Netherworld breach occurred. It wasn't long after my husband died. But from what I heard, a lot of terrible things happened, and horrible creatures appeared. If we could find any books or holocrons with information from there, maybe we could find these Mist-Walkers in there."

Yet if they couldn't find them even in the Netherworld records, Kay still had two other options, one of them being that they could have come from the Mirrorverse. She was stuck there for a time. It was bizarre to have to live under such oppression and to be classed by her species. These creatures seemed to have had an air of superiority about them.

As he sipped his tea, Ghorua marveled at how little he knew about Lady Kay. He knew the basics, where she came from, who her immediate family was, even a few friends. He knew next to nothing about her past, however. Something he planned to remedy.

Ghorua took the lightsaber from the table, grasping the small thing in his palm. It was so intricate, so delicate. He could have crushed it in his palm right there, taken the gem inside, and ran. If he were a different person, that was. Perhaps there was a bit of good in him after all. He spoke, deep voice thin. "I'm sorry, this is a bit off-topic." He smiled, encouraging the President with his words. "Who was he? Your husband, I mean?"

Talking about the Mist-Walkers tired Ghorua, and he figured he needed a respite. Maybe the question would invoke a new emotion, maybe a glance into the mind of the Lady. Old habits died hard, after all.

The question posed by [member="Ghorua the Shark"] had caught her off guard. She wasn't quite saddened so much by the memories anymore and the tone in her voice had said it as much. "He was a Dark Jedi, a wonderful fighter and strategist. We first met when he tried to intimidate me, by the urging of his Sith Mistress, and get me to fight him. But I didn't flinch, didn't cower and that earned me his respect. We ended up bumping into eachother more. He would get injured in some battles and I would heal him. In time we started to work together to either stop conflicts or minimize the damage to our side. He could never become a true Sith Lord, for I was the light that he clung to. He was a great man and I am proud to have known him so well."

Now she had [member="Veiere Arenais"] to look up to in the same way. There was a connection there, but she was afraid to speak it out, for fear that it wasn't real or at the very least, just a one time thing.

Kay sipped her tea. "He probably would have liked you very much, and more than likely he would have chosen you as a sparring partner. He loved to be sure that he was in top form at all times and you'd of been a great challenger."

Ghorua smiled as Kay described her past husband. He could tell by the way her features lightened that he had meant a lot to her. It was no wonder that she had wanted his lightsaber crystal back so much. The Shark chuckled, visibly much happier. "I've met a few Dark Jedi in my time, none of them all that friendly. But if you say he was a good man, I would've loved to smash him into a pulp every now and again."

One thing Ghorua didn't get much of was worthy competition. It got boring, going toe-to-toe with the slimy scum he hunted down. None of them were fighters. Even the fighters he did go up against were nothing next to the Shark. But the few battles he did deem worth his time were exhilarating. It would have been nice to have a friend strong enough to hold their own against Ghorua. As much as he enjoyed Kay's company, he was confident he could wipe the floor with Her Majesty.

The Herglic sipped his tea, enjoying the aromatic flavor. He placed the Lady's weapon back on the table tentatively. His next question would most likely be stretching the boundaries of small talk. "How did he... You know..."

Death was a touchy subject for the Shark, but he figured he would inquire. He had never experienced a friend or family member dying, so he didn't know what it was like to lose someone so close. Perhaps the Lady's response would enlighten him.

Shaw was certainly different. She laughed a little to herself at the thought of the two of them sparring nearly every day. Yes, they would have had a lot of fun, would probably gone into battles together and possibly been the best of friends. [member="Ghorua the Shark"] certainly fit the profile.

His next question was something that she expected as a follow up. It wasn't as though it was something that she had avoided. On the contrary, she had spoken of what happened on many occasions. Usually it was to try to get them to understand why she handled most things on her own and kept people at arm's length. "A powerful Sith Lord wanted him, but I got in the way. So the Sith Lord did whatever he could to make my husband hate me, he tried to break our marriage, tried to keep us separated. But all of his efforts failed. So then he attacked us and our friends. We were all beat up pretty badly. I was about to be killed when Shaw made a deal with the Sith Lord, sacrificing his life for mine. I watched as he was impaled, saw the life leave his eyes. The Sith Lord approached me, whispered something in the Sith language and then disappeared. I never saw him again...thankfully."

She sipped her tea, taking a moment to reflect. Usually it would bring tears to her eyes, but not now. She had finally allowed herself to move on after 12 years. And in a way, she felt free because of it.

The room grew silent as the Shark observed the President, taking in her calm demeanor. Suddenly, he was brought back to his second encounter with the Lady, in a cabin on Bakura. He had said that the lightsaber was just a tool, a means to an end. That she shouldn't have worried so much. Ghorua now realized he had been very wrong.

Ghorua had never understood sentimental value. Tools were tools, workers were workers, weapons were weapons. That was what he had always been taught. But in his travels, especially with Lady Kay, he had come to realize the importance of sentimentality. The crystal had been a tether between Kay Larr and this 'Shaw', connecting her to her departed husband. Now that she talked about him, however, he saw no hint of tears, only reflective tranquility. Could it be she had finally let go? Perhaps there was some merit to his upbringing. The dead were dead, the living were living, and they should treat them as such.

The Shark swirled his cup's contents between his fingers, careful not to break it. "Thank you for sharing. I really mean that." Ghorua rarely found himself being completely earnest. Now was one of those times. "I wish I could swap sad stories with you, my liege, but I've got nothing." The Herglic smiled, adjusting his suitcoat. "My father got hit by a speeder bike once. That was kinda sad before it got funny." Ghorua laughed, reminiscing on old times, before letting it fade.

Perhaps it was a sad story after all. Ghorua had no idea if his parents were alive right now. They had been in the Courscant Penitentiary when the Galactic Alliance invaded. Ghorua hadn't been able to get in touch with them since. Either they escaped in the chaos, were sent to another facility, or...

The Shark didn't like to think about it.
