Nubica Felidae

We are well and truly forked...

Nubica couldn't sleep. Every night she spent some time trying, but in the end she decided to walk off the need for rest.

She didn't understand it. As a Jedi, she was used to sleeping anywhere, in all sorts of conditions. She had slept in cargo holds and spaceport hangars and on a pile of droid parts. She had slept four hours in the middle of a field during a driving rainstorm. When she needed sleep, she told her mind to empty and her body to unwind, and they obeyed.

But in the past, she'd never had to deal with responsibility.

She had done that which Jedi Knights were supposed to do. She had agreed to take a Padawan.

So he didn't sleep. She had been at the Jedi Temple for weeks now, preparing. She’d sought one of the Masters for advice, which had been poignant as it was confusing. “You need reflection, as important as days of action."

There had been much action lately. Mission after mission.

There seemed to be plenty she could be doing, but she did not want to cross the Master she'd asked for guidance, so she stayed. But the weeks at the Temple only made her sleeplessness worse. She walked the empty halls at night. The glow lamps were powered down to a soft blue, making it a restful time to stroll. She opened her mind and simply walked.

She bumped into a Jedi Master, also wandering. She did not want to discuss her issues with him. "I find peace from walking,” she offered by way of an explanation, when none was asked for.

“I see many things in you," the Master said. "Peace is not one of them."

She didn't answer. She didn't shrug, or turn away, or drop her eyes. She hoped the Master would read the unspoken message. I am not ready to talk about this.

“You need action?”

“I have been advised to wait and reflect. I am expecting a Padawan in the morning.”

The Master chuckled. His eyes spoke volumes. They said they understood precisely what Nubica was going through. “First Padawan eh,” he said and placed a hand on her shoulder. “You should have said. You’ll do fine.”

And with that he wandered off, leaving Nubica initially perplexed but suddenly in need of sleep.

So much so that she was awoken by her alarm for the first time in ages. She rushed to clean and get dressed and ran to the hangar to meet her Padawan, her robes flapping behind her.

Faratain waited nervously for his new master. He was worried about what she would think about him. He had already risked his life many times to be here, and if she didn't like him it would all have been for nothing.

It was nothing, he told himself to put it out of his mind, the council knew what they were doing. He stood up straight like he had been taught in the service of the queen and readied himself to meet his new master.

He saw a woman coming towards him and conjured up a weak smile, he hadn't had to smile in years.

"Master Nubica? I am Faratain, unless I am mistaken I am to be your new apprentice."

Nubica stopped running just in time. Her face was no doubt slightly flushed, but at least she didn't look like a mad-woman, rushing to meet him.

Jedi were supposed to be serene, after all.

“Faratain. Please just call me Nubica.” Her voice faltered for a second, clearly unsure what to say next. She approximated a small bow. She wasn’t sure why, but it felt appropriate.

“You are…my first Padawan. Please don’t let that alarm you,” she felt her cheeks redden once more. “The Council believes I am ready to train. But if the protocols are a little…hazy…please forgive me,”

“So,” she seemed to have eventually gained a measure of confidence, “Why don’t you tell me about you, then I can do the same and we can take it from there.” She smiled finally, clearly relieved to have gotten the opening exchange out of the way.

Faratain returned the small bow, mimicking his new master.

"If it makes you feel any better Mas-" Faratain stopped himself before continuing "Sorry, Nubica." Faratain cracked a genuine smile "Youre my first master as well."

"Now as to myself..." Faratain paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts. "On my home planet force sensitive children are trained from birth by the Cult of Ashira to become warriors for the matriarchal Star Queen. I don't know my last name and it is very likely Faratain isn't the name given to me at birth, but it is my name never the less. I was trained for many, many years in the ways of combat and some sense of the force, though I imagine my training was much different from the ways of a Jedi. I decided that my destiny would not be forged by the whims of the cult, so I fled the planet in disguise. I had heard stories of the Jedi before but, I didn't truly know they existed until I went to see for myself. Luckily the council accepted me despite my age and now I'm here. I am eager to begin my new life as a Jedi, with your guidance of course."

Faratain stopped talking hoping, he hadn't said too much or too little, and waited for Nubica's response.

Nubica smiled. “Well that’s good to hear. Wouldn’t like to have someone that couldn’t hold a Master down.”

She listened to his story. Every one was different, which made the Jedi such a rich and varied tapestry. His training thus far appeared to e combat focused, but she already checked any thoughts she might have that this was an area she could neglect. She would need to test his understanding — and his role as a warrior. Jedi often had different views on what that meant. None were wrong and all were right. By definition. Her role was to train him and give him as broad an experience as she could. Which course he then took was up to him. New Jedi Order. Jedi attached to the Alliance but independent of the Order. Rogue Jedi, roaming the galaxy looking to do good. Or one of the other Orders, of which she knew of at least two.

“Names are not important. Not really. Nor are titles. It’s just about what you do. Me? I was born on Naboo. Found to be Force Sensitive at a young age and shipped off to Ossus to join the Jedi Order. Served the Republic but, with my Master’s blessing, decided to broaden my experience. Which brought me here.”

“Im a decent pilot and competent in all saber forms. I have a few tricks up my sleeve, but the thing of note is that I use Vaapad. Not typical, I know. And I’m not exactly old. But duelling has always been my passion and my development of the Form closely scrutinised, less I fall to the Dark-side. I even have a talisman to help me in that regard.”

She showed him her ring, not particularly noticeable but she clearly held a lot of store in its effectiveness.

“So, training. What do you want to learn and what do you need to learn? And do you prefer classroom training, or on the job training so to speak…missions.”

Faratain inspected the ring intently. He only had a vague understanding of the different forms of light saber combat, but from his understand of Vaapad he thought his new master was very admirable for dedicating herself to the cause of light with such an aggressive form of combat. On top of this he had previously been interested in Vaapad.

"Actually Nubica, I had an interest in Vaapad after learning about it. It seems close to the forms we learned back in the combat academy. I'm sure with your careful guidance I will learn how to master it and resist the dark side. I too have always been interested in the art of the duel, though not always in how i am told to use it."

Faratain looked around for a brief moment before continuing.

"There's one small problem though, that being, I don't have a light saber yet. I mean I have this training saber" Faratain pulled out an old beaten up training saber staff handle from beneath his attire "but it isn't exactly... up to scratch. That may be a good place to start"

Faratain smiled sheepishly, a little embarrassed " Im sorry if thats an inconvenience."

"As to how i am trained, I believe I've had enough of classrooms and compounds. I'd prefer to learn on the job as it were. I would like to see the galaxy." Faratain said with a hint of excitement and wanderlust. "What do you think we should do Nubica?"

Nubica listened to her Padawan. “Vaapad is not for every Jedi. First you need to learn every other Form to a competent level. And be prepared to forsake a wider knowledge of the Force. Not to only be a duellist — but to devote a sizeable chunk of your learning on this aspect of your development.”

“But I did, so it’s entirely possible.”

“A saber is a saber but…there is nothing like your own crystal and crafting your own lightsaber. So that needs to be the first thing we sort. Go to the library and study designs that work for you. Then go to the stores here and pick up the parts you need. We’ll carry on this chat, but expect a call from me shortly so we can both get new saber crystals.”

“Every heard of kyber crystals? Or the planet Lothal?”

[member="Faratain"]

Faratain listened to what his master had to say about Vapaad "I understand" he said, slightly less enthusiastic than he had been "but I am willing to do what is required of me". Faratain felt determined to prove that he could be an excellent Jedi as well as an excellent duelist.

Faratain carefully listened while Nubica discussed his instructions for creating his own saber, making sure he understood them before commenting. "I will go to the library and make sure to design my blade carefully and masterfully. Hopefully the parts wont be too expensive... I'll expect your call in a while"

"I have a very loose understanding of kyber crystals. What I know I've heard from other Jedi, about how they're essential in the creation of light sabers. I'm afraid however that I haven't heard of the planet Lothal, why do you ask? Will we be traveling there??" Faratain asked intently. "No matter, I suppose you will tell me in due time." Faratain said without waiting for her response. "Alright I will be off to the library then, I will expect your call later, hopefully I will have finished with my tasks before then".

With that Faratain began to head in the direction of the library, with an air of collected eagerness about him.
