Ammunition Type: Agrinium Coated Baradium Flat Flechettes, Ion bolts

Ammunition Capacity: Varies by platform.

Effective Range: 3.5km (4km maximum)

Rate of Fire: 4,000 RPM with select fire modes for single-shot, burst fire, and fully automatic fire.

Special Features:
Strengths:

+A high accuracy and fire rate make the system ideal for shooting down missiles and other small, fast moving projectiles.
+Highly effective at running down the shields of personnel, armored vehicles, and starfighters/gunships.
+Can disable electronic components and synthetic targets upon direct impact.
+Fully automated, but overseers can override automatic mode for manual control, or set conditions for operation based on their individual needs.

Weaknesses:

-Power hungry, limited to use on vehicles, or at fixed locations with a dedicated generator.
-Unlike many mass drivers, the system is limited to a single munition type to keep operational costs low.
-The flechettes lack any splash effect for area damage.
-The system lacks its own dedicated sensor array, requiring guidance from its host platform.

Description:

While the Deimos family of positron cannons makes for an excellent offensive platform, its performance at point defense was found to be poor due to limitations on its use - dangerous to deploy in atmospheric conditions even with appropriate modifications. The Kiribian military tasked KSA to develop a replacement for that role, retaining the ability to quickly shoot down armored and shielded missiles among other things.

Taking inspiration from the design of the Mandalorian Ripper, KSA developed their own upscaled version that rapidly fires flat agrinium coated flechettes of depleted baradium, enveloped in packets of ions. The launch mechanism is a specialized repulsor array that generates tight beams of anti-gravity to propel the flechettes toward the target.

Projectiles of depleted baradium alone have good performance against shields and armor due to the density of the substance, especially in flechette form, but the addition of an agrinium jacket and ion envelope enhances that effect (for shield busting). Within the atmosphere, the ion envelope also helps reduce drag to maintain range and accuracy.

Even after exiting the “barrel”, the projectiles continue to receive a sustained push from the repulsor array, outwards of 300 meters. This results in a mass driver inherently more accurate than comparable systems like a standard rail gun or gauss cannon. Coupled with a high fire rate, many rounds can be delivered into a single point to simulate the effects of tandem-charge warheads.

Outside of its intended purpose as a point defense system, the Vespa has been found to be useful in the role of a high-velocity autocannon, performing well against personnel and armored fighting vehicles alike. For this reason, it may be often seen as the main gun of an infantry fighting vehicle or an armored personnel carrier, or as the secondary weapon of a main battle tank or walker.

The Vespa comes in two variants. One meant for the Kiribian military, and a second version for export. They’re identical in performance, but the Kiribian variant comes equipped with an integrated bio-comm to link up remotely with other systems for guidance without the fear of jamming. This variant is exclusive to the Kiribian military and select allies. Meanwhile, the export version is sold direct to customers, or to other vendors for use in their products.
