Rationale: During the Dark Ages, the Kiribian Systems Union found itself cut off from its normal suppliers of arms as the Galactic Alliance collapsed. As [SIZE=10.5pt]result[/SIZE], it would charter its own defense corporation to create a reliable supplier that would always be based in the Kiribian system.

Description:
KSA originated from the Kiribian Development Bureau, a small scientific agency involved with some military R&D. On military projects, KDB would work closely with private defense contractors, commissioning them to develop prototypes, and providing technical assistance with their own findings. That arrangement was ended almost overnight, as KDB lost contact with the companies as they literally ceased to exist. The Kiribian military would turn the KDB to take the [SIZE=10.5pt]lead i[/SIZE]n developing military technologies for the foreseeable future. In time, the small agency would grow into a massive governmental entity as local defense companies were nationalized and placed under its direct control for manufacturing.
By the 700's the then bloated agency was no longer needed as an arms manufacturer under direct government management. Kiribi still had a desire to maintain an in-house manufacturer for security reasons, so the defense wing of the KDB was spun off and reformed into a publically owned corporation called Kiribian Systems Armory. The KDB was then returned to its former stature as a purely scientific organization.
While servicing the Kiribian Systems Union as it primary military supplier, the KSA also reaps large profits from its popular export line. The Kiribian government rarely exerts direct control over KSA, allowing it to run itself like a real corporation to remain profitable.
The KSA is able to supply most of the Kiribian military's needs, but it will subcontract larger corporations like EIC to finish large projects like capital ships and defensive installations that it designs.
