- Excellent Shielding - Copious amounts of military-grade generators were installed to envelop the vessel in a powerful two-layer shroud of shielding, giving the vessel and the occupants within it protection against energy and physical projectiles on par with that of a standard cruiser.
- Fighter Complement - The frigate has the capacity to act as a task force vessel, usually carrying two full squadrons of special-made starfighters piloted by elite Jedi and allowing rapid deployment of them to assist an allied ship against its attacker.
- Poorly Armed - In order to maintain the Jedi Order's policy of pacifism, only a light amount of weaponry was installed. It is enough to allow the ship to defend itself against starfighters and corvettes, but it is in no way capable of returning fire against other frigates or cruisers.
- Hindered Maneuverability - Making space for twenty-four starfighters has removed some of the sub-light thrusters installed on the ship, this means that the vessel's overall maneuverability has taken a hit, making it more difficult for the ship to turn or align its weaponry in the direction of the enemy.
As the reconstruction of a peaceful Jedi Order remains underway, many emissaries sent from the Council have turned up attacked or destroyed by pirates and other criminal elements hunting along neutral hyperlanes. Concurrent to this, reports of pirates also attacking defenseless worlds outside of Commenori-controlled territory have begun to crop up, forcing the Council into personally intervening.
Thus, as with the Sigma-5 and the Xi-29, a new class of Jedi vessel was thrust into service, but this time a frigate was created instead of a small one or two-man snubfighter. The Kidem-class Jedi Patrol Frigate was designed first and foremost to dissuade undesirables from targeting civilian convoys, with a secondary role as a task-force carrier or diplomatic vessel.
Yielding to the Council's wishes of the ship not being used as a warship, the designers installed many military-grade systems but only a handful of actual weaponry. Twenty turbolasers and thirty anti-starfighter weapons were deemed enough to be able to down anything smaller than a frigate, but this also made it so that the ship class couldn't stand up to frigates or cruisers without assistance.
To combat this flaw, two layers of advanced shielding were integrated, each laying on top of each other, into it via powerful generators located in multiple areas around the vessel. The shielding is as strong as that of a standard cruiser in other navies. The most important aspect of the ship, though, would have to be its ability to store two full squadrons of combat starfighters in its expansive hangar bays.
While two squadrons might not seem like much in terms of a larger-scale engagement, it is a godsend when faced against smaller pirate forces. Especially so that since this ship is in itself a Jedi vessel, the persons piloting the fighters are elite Jedi in special-made starfighters, most likely a terrifying sight on the field of battle.
