Biography.
She was born in the City of Dreams, or so they called it. That was the name of the largest populated hubs on Dremulae, a resort city perched on the shores of the beautiful Sea of Translucency. But she wasn't born into luxury in one of the seaside villas maintained by the galaxy's wealthy; instead, she was born into a low-class family, her parents among the countless service industry workers who kept the villa-owners and tourists entertained. To live in grime and squalor while surrounded by opulence is a difficult thing for a child, and she grew up full of resentment - resentment for the wealthy and their easy lives, and resentment for her parents for entirely different reasons. Dad was a bartender, and a depressive alcoholic. Mom was a waitress, and cheated on him constantly.
She got out as soon as she could, away from the screaming matches and the crying younger siblings and the guilt and the shame. She was quick and clever with both her hands and her head, and she found work as a dealer at a casino as soon as they would hire her - which turned out to be at sixteen. For a while, she made it on her own, getting by on a combination of her meager wages, the tips her smile could earn, and a dash of petty thievery when that wasn't enough. She moved in with a boyfriend at eighteen, someone older, who promised to take care of her. It ended badly - he turned out to be controlling, jealous, and insecure. But in the year she lived with him, she also found the first and only true love of her life: her daughter, Tala. She moved out with her baby, a single mom at nineteen.
She'd never paid much attention to politics. Dremulae wasn't a particularly important planet, and none of the wars the Galactic Alliance had been embroiled in had come all that close to it. Unlike most children on the 9th century ABY, she'd seen little of conflict. But that changed when Coruscant fell, and the Empire swept across the Core. Suddenly Dremulae was under a new regime, one that taught her what controlling could really mean when brought to its furthest extremes. Heavy travel restrictions limited tourism to the Empire's wealthy elite, and unrestricted free markets made the poor poorer. Soon, she lost her job. Soon after, she was caught stealing. The prison stint was brief, but it lost her guardianship of her daughter and bumped her down to Subcitizen.
She never wanted to be a soldier. The thought never even crossed her mind before the Empire came. But the man at the COMLIT office told her that, if she raised her Citizenship Score enough that she became a Prime Citizen, she would be able to get Tala back from the Imperial Kinder-Block where she'd been sent... and she would do anything for that. So rather than get sent to to the gemstone mines on Ragoon VI or the fish farms on Champala, she volunteered to serve in the Imperial military. She surprised everyone but herself with her performance in basic training, pushing herself to her limits and beyond, following orders without question for the first time in her life. So they put her in charge of a squad of other "volunteers", expendable Subcitizens that could be thrown into the meat grinder.
She knows that's what they're doing. She doesn't care. She's going to survive. For Tala.
Personality and Beliefs.
Kasan Osera has known for all her life that the only person she can depend on is herself. Everyone else, she's found, is only interested in using or exploiting her... everyone except her daughter Tala, the one example of unconditional love she's ever had. She's not a true believer in the Empire. She's not a true believer in anything, except that she'll do whatever it takes to get Tala back. This attitude makes her surprisingly ruthless; few expect the slight young woman to be so hardened, so ready to fight and kill. But Kasan was getting into knife fights in back alleys in her early teens, and she's a lot tougher than she looks. She doesn't get close to anyone, doesn't form attachments, doesn't celebrate successes or grieve the fallen. She is single-minded, entirely focused on the only goal that matters.
Cold and dispassionate with almost everyone, Kasan is an effective squad leader from a strategic standpoint, though less so from a morale perspective. To her, if everyone in the galaxy is out to use each other, she'd be stupid not to be looking to leverage everyone else in the same way. The Empire is using her, sure, but if being their tool means getting Tala back, it's worth it... and she'll make everyone around her into her tools to get there. Deep inside her, buried under years of trauma-formed armor, there's a better person - a person capable of compassion, empathy, and love. But that wasn't the person who could survive alone on the hard streets of the City of Dreams, and it isn't the person who can survive a tour of duty in the Imperial Military, so she keeps that person locked away.
Until one day, if it all goes right, she can be that person for Tala - and no one else.
