Lightsaber Forms:

All of the below entries cover footwoork, grip, strikes specific to the Form, combat principles and philosophies and such information as is pertinent for their usage in combat. The summation is just an overview, and not a cumulative listing of Unless noted, each Form is available for instruction from a Padawan on, though the Gatekeeper will only allow knowledge proper for a seekers ability (rank) to be accessed (I.E. a Padawan could not learn as much of one of the Forms from this Holocron as a Master could). Unless otherwise noted, any level of practitioner may gain rank appropriate training if worthy as a Jedi.

  • Form I (Shii-Cho): Called 'The Way of the Sarlaac' or 'The Determination Form', Shii-Cho is wild and unpredictable, useful against many opponents but weak against singular foes. Lacks techniques for utilizing against Lightsaber opponents. Details of the Six Target Zones, 'Disarming Slash' and 'Sarlaac Sweep'. Designed for the purpose of disarmament without serious injury. Often emotionally heated combat when utilizing this Form. Entry detailed by Kit Fisto.

  • Form II (Makashi): Called 'The Way of the Ysalamiri, or 'The Contention Form', Makashi focuses on precision footwork and exacting strikes. Preferred form for Lightsaber Duels/Combat. Most elegant of all the Forms. Favors one-handed lightsaber hilts, particularly curved hilted ones. This form was based on balance and precision to outmaneuver opponents, with fluidity and economy of motion being relied on in chief over strength. Glaring weaknesses are few, but dealing with projectile weapons or multiple opponents are trademark issues. Entry Detailed by Jedi Master Dooku.

  • Form III (Soresu): Called 'The Resilience Form' or 'The Way of the Mynock', Soresu focuses the ultimate expression of defense as it's philosophy. Soresu is ideal for intercepting blaster and other projectile fire, and is often a very inward-directed form, with meditative studies being highly encouraged, particularly the use of Moving Meditation. Often critiqued as a slow and passive Form, which neglects attack or counter-attack measures. Often focuses on prolonging the fight to wear down an opponent. Entry Detailed by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi

  • Form IV (Ataru): Called 'The Aggression Form' or 'Way of the Hawk-bat', Ataru focuses kinetic movements and a near constant offensive front. An aggressive style, Form IV was fast-paced and effective against single opponents, though weaker in prolonged combat and confined spaces. Also, it was not recommended for use against opponents wielding blaster. Ataru was characterized by Force-assisted acrobatics, such as somersaults and leaping strikes, both for attack and defense. Another characteristic of the form was its fast, powerful strikes from multiple directions. Entry Detailed by Grandmaster Yoda.

  • Form V (Shien/Djem So): Shien, considered the classical variant of Form V, was more adept at blocking blaster bolts than for blade-to-blade combat, whereas Djem So was developed later and was specifically intended for use in lightsaber combat. Both Shien and Djem So were designed to use an opponent's attack against them, as evidenced by Shien's focus on returning blaster bolts to their origin and Djem So's emphasis on immediate counter-attacks. Although some Jedi felt that Form V encouraged aggression and domination, that sentiment did not stop many Jedi from practicing the form. It was created by Form III masters who desired a more offensive style. Entry Detailed by Jedi Master Plo Kloon

  • Form VI (Niman): Form VI, also known as Niman, the Way of the Rancor, the Moderation Form, and the diplomat's form, was the sixth form of the seven forms of lightsaber combat. This fighting style was a hybrid martial art created by effectively combining elements of the preceding lighstaber forms into a single, generalized form. Niman balanced out between the various specializations of the other forms, covering many of the basic moves, but focusing on overall moderation. To compensate for the relaxed focus on bladework and lack of significant specialization, Niman training regimens encouraged the inclusion of Force-based attacks in combat, such as telekinetic pulls and shoves used in sync with lightsaber strikes.

  • Form VII (Juyo/Vapaad): Form VII, also known as Juyo, the Way of the Vornskr, or the Ferocity Form, was the seventh of seven forms recognized as canon for lightsaber combat by the last Jedi Council of the Old Jedi Order. In use millennia prior to the Battle of Yavin, the Juyo incarnation of Form VII was described as the most vicious form of lightsaber combat and was said to involve significant internal focus on the part of the user. In the later days of the Old Republic, a new variation of Form VII, dubbed Vaapad after a creature native to the planet Sarapin, was created by Jedi Masters Mace Windu and Sora Bulq. Vaapad was explained as being a state of mind rather than just a fighting style, allowing the wielder to channel his own inner darkness into the duel, and accept the fury of the opponent.

RESTRICTED TO MASTER LEVEL PRACTITIONERS ONLY

  • Form "Zero": Was not an actual form of lightsaber combat, but rather an ethical principle. It was an expression of the idea that a Jedi should know when to use their lightsabers, and when to withhold from resorting to force and instead find an alternative means of solving a problem. This idea was defined by Jedi Master Yoda to address the need of the Jedi to restrain themselves when tempted to use "aggressive negotiations," and instead use another well-developed Jedi skill, such as the Jedi mind trick. This was a method used to arrive at a solution without resorting to violence.
New Jedi Order Lightsaber Forms
  • Strong Style: Uses powerful strikes to batter through defenses. This style incorporates great range and power, but often leaves the Jedi open to attack.
  • Fast Style: Consisting of short and quick motions with the blade that could be chained and combined almost indefinitely, this style allowed for multiple attacks at an extremely fast pace.
  • Medium Style: An intermediate style between the fast and the strong styles, the medium style was based on a perfect equilibrium between speed and power.

Lightsaber Techniques:

  • Sokan: Revolved around using the environment itself to gain a tactical advantage in combat.
  • Jar'Kari: The practice of wielding dual blades in combat, based on Atrisian techniques.
  • Tràkata: A form of lightsaber combat developed for taking advantage of a lightsaber blade's ability to be turned on and off.
  • Tripzest: A type of aerial lightsaber combat originally developed by the airborne Force-sensitive Majestrix of Skye, Kharys.
  • Mounted Lightaber Combat: Practiced when Jedi would have to use their lightsabers in combat while riding a mount
  • Telekinetic Lightsaber Combat: Made use of telekinesis in lightsaber combat.
  • Su Ma: The use of rotation in the Jedi Knight's form of lightsaber combat, it was composed by three forms.

Lightsaber Types:

  • Lightsaber: Your typical lightsaber, this entry is done by Cin Drailig, or was last recorded by him as is apparent by the apparition. It covers principles from basic maintenance, care, and modification, to standard grips and the like. Accessible to Padawans and up.

  • Curved Hilt Lightsaber: This particular entry is recorded by Jedi Master Dooku before his leaving the Jedi Order, and details the acceptable curvatures in hilt, and their various implications in usage, as well as things such as grips, and how this variant relates to Forms outside of it's typical usage of Makashi. Accesible to Padawans and up.

  • Shoto: Basic, Intermediate, & Advanced principles use. Notations by Grandmaster Yoda of primary usage of shotos are of particular note. Accessible to Padawan and up.

  • Guard Shoto: Basic principles of usage, both offensively and as defensive tool. This particular entry is almost a stub, and seems to be more a cautionary advisory, with only the most basic usages covered. Accessible to Knights and above.

  • Saber-staff: Details Basic through Advanced principles of usage, including suggested Forms, variant strikes, and adaptations of traditional combat strategies and theorems for staff usage. Masters may be able to access information on variant saber-staff that is two fully functioning lightsabers able to combine into a staff. Accessible to Knights and above.

  • Lightsaber Pike: The bulk of this entry appears to have been written by a former Coruscanti Temple Guard who retired to the Socorro Academy. It details this unique weapon, suitable Form variants, strikes, and general combat tactics and theories, given the unique nature of this weapon. Accessible to Masters Only.

  • Lightwhip: This entry seems to be more of a 'what to do when encountered' entry than a 'how-to' for usage, entry added by an unkown Jedi during the Mandalorian Wars. A sufficiently skilled duelist could likely glean the very basics of combat with on by thorough study and experimentation. Accessible to Masters Only.

  • Lightclub/Dual Phase: These two entries are done by a Wookie Jedi Master, whose actual name is rather hard to render into Galactic Basic. The Entry itself deals with the usage of strengths and weaknesses of both of these specialists weapons, including what Forms and Strikes or Techniques work best. Accessible to Knights and above.
Miscellaneous Knowledge:
  • 6 Body Target Zones
  • Three Rings of Defense
  • Marks of Contact
  • Ready Stances
  • Various Sequences & Velocities

Description:
This particular holocron is not one of breath taking or awe inspiring knowledge to most. Indeed, when it was lost as the Empire razed the Academy at Socorro, few Jedi Guardians really knew of it, and those who did died defending the Academy, or hiding it. Within it contains a long and unparalleled collective of knowledge on the use of lightsabers in their various incarnations, forms, and the techniques.

This knowledge was gathered over the years of the Guardians training at the now destroyed Jedi Academy on Socorro, and contains knowledge from some of the premier warriors of the Order. These warriors range from the likes of Mace Windu and Grandmaster Yoda, to Dooku and Cin Drailig and more.

Many who have studied the Holocron comment on the fact that there are layers to it, hinting that more than what appears on the surface may be accessible, if the Gatekeeper deems one worthy enough. The Gatekeeper himself is a Jedi of unknown name and origin, appearing to be human from what can be seen of his features in rather shapeless robes. Various entries both easily accessible and hidden in the Holocron and taught by apparitions of those who added the information to the holocron.
