Katarine was spending an unusual amount of time at the Jedi Temple these days. As a Jedi Investigator she spent most of her life undercover in the criminal underworld, but lately she had been wandering the new temple ship and helping to get her niece Casi adjusted. It was weird to have so much free time but also relaxing and gave her the chance to really connect with the Force. It also gave her a lot of time to read the files of her fellow Jedi. It was nice to learn the names and faces of those in the order. During the Clone Wars there had been many Jedi but comparably she did not see that many on the roster for the New Jedi Order. She sat in the archives pouring over files, checking in on padawns, and during this time came across an anomaly.

There was a Cathar padawan who didn't seem to be on the proper path. The young male had been through several masters and seemed more prone to musical talent than his actual Jedi teachings. This gave Katarine pause as she read his file. Nir was certainly an asset to the Jedi, and one that was not being utilized properly. She decided to meet with the padawan to see what this was all about.

She waited in the garden of the ship, surrounded by birds and flowers. It was a pity that they were aboard a roving vessel and could not feel the sunshine on their faces, but Kat knew it was a necessary precaution. The attack on Coruscant seemed likely now and the Jedi wanted to protect it's younglings. As a survivor of Order 66 she could not blame them. She stood serenely, watching the wildlife as she awaited the padawan to join her.

The thought of meeting yet another supposed master didn't really inspire hope for the boy. He was aimless, and expressing it partly through his music. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise, as he certainly felt the muse to write songs. Not so much to be a jedi anymore though. Training had become monotonous, and he felt useless in sitting on a temple that wandered around not helping with the war effort.

But, he was ever the optimist when it came to his training. He couldn't help it, as Jonyna Si Jonyna Si inspired many a cathar to be so. Especially within his tribe. He couldn't give up, just like he couldn't give up on his music.

As he entered the garden, where he had agreed to meet this new master, he did note it was a nicer place to meet than some stingy old office. Maybe this one would be better?

"Rebel Please, I think you oughta know~" The boy sang as he idly wandered, looking for his new master. The garden was vast, and maybe part of him was actively putting this off.

Alright, come on kid.

Letting out a long sigh, he finally approached the woman he had been ignoring for a while now.

"...hey."

She felt him enter long before he approached her. It was curious to witness, as she felt him wander around, dragging his feet. She wondered what that was about, but decided not to comment on it. Maybe he was nervous and needed to work up courage to speak with her. When he finally approached she turned to look at him. His greeting was far from standard. There was no respect, no title, no introduction like one would usually expect from a padawan. This did not offend Katarine in the slightest of course. Instead it made her cock her head in puzzlement. Was he feeling let down by the Jedi?

"Hello Nir. My name is Katarine Ryiah. You can call me Kat. Everyone does." She smiled and let her eyes wander back to the garden where birds were singing and flowers blooming.

"Forgive me for summoning you. I read your file and I wanted to meet you. I heard you are in a band and I thought the sounds of the birds might be nice to listen to. Tell me about your music...."

She of course wanted to help him but she didn't feel the need to jump right to business. She did genuinely want to know about his passions.

About his music?

Huh.

"Oh. Ummmm....yeah. I'm the lead singer of a band called H.A.W.K. It's me and my buddies from back on Cathar. We're..."
He let out a cough. "Cool. Ya know?"

He had no idea how to talk to adults. He could put up his mask, act like he did on stage, but around other jedi, it never felt right. Just felt like he was lying to their faces. His rock star persona, it wasn't something he put on to win people over, it was his way of overcoming stage fright, and separating himself from the jedi he was trying to be.

Katarine could tell he was a little nervous talking with her, but the name of his band sounded neat. She wondered if it stood for anything or if they had named it after the animal? Perhaps she would ask him in the future, but first she should probably get to the real reason they were there today.

"I'm glad you are enjoying your music. What of your Jedi training? Are you enjoying that? How has it been going?"

"Well....you'll be my fourth master in six months. Every time I've been given one, they ditch me after a week." He frowns. "No one seems to want the rock star."

"I see."

Katarine had figured something might be going on but there were no notes about why other masters were abandoning the padawan. Perhaps they were called away on assignments or maybe there was something limiting Nir's ability to be a padawan. She was not sure.

"Tell me, what skills do you have as a padawan? Do you have any experience in the field?"

"Oh! Yeah!" Nir smiled, lighting up at the chance to show off his skills. He was still a teen after all. "I fought on Yavin a while back. Beat this weird witch girl. As for what I can do..." He held out a hand, a flash of light heralding the appearance of a saber in his hand. "I can summon stuff. Anything that's, well...mine. At least, that's how it's worked so far. I make stuff, and then I'm able to summon it. I've also got a handle on controlling the wind!" He smiled, speaking, but Katarine Ryiah didn't hear his voice from his mouth, but rather from behind her. "It makes a neat trick, yeah?"

Kat was pleased to see that Nir did have capabilities in the Force. Summoning items was difficult but he could do it as a padawan. This was impressive and she imagined controlling wind was fueled by his musical career.

“I am impressed. Those abilities do not come to everyone and Yavin provided good experience in the fields. Tell me.. what areas are you struggling with? What do you feel is needed to push you towards the path of knighthood?”

Nir thought for a moment. He didn't really understand yet what it took to become a knight. He knew there were trials, but those had always been vague and esoteric.

"...motivation. You'll be my fourth master and..." He frowned, sitting down. "I want a friend, a mentor. Someone I can go to for advice and trust. I'm sick of being discarded, and being treated like an obligation."

Katarine took a seat with him and listened as he talked about being discarded. There were no notes left in his file about why his other masters were pulled away. She expected duty got in the line or perhaps they thought him better fitted for the Service Corps, but without any real notes Katarine had nothing but instinct to go on. Her instinct of course was to help.

"The path to becoming a Jedi can take many forms but it always comes from within. I think we can use the feelings of abandonment you struggle with and channel them into a path forward. This can be your motivation. The Jedi seek to help those of the galaxy so they never have to struggle or feel abandoned. As someone who knows what that feels like let it light a fire inside your heart. Let it be the fuel that keeps you going. "

For moment they sat, listening to the birds around them.

"I can mentor you forward Nir. I do think you have what it takes to be a Jedi. Trust is earned I know, so why don't we work together to see if I can be someone you can learn to trust?"

"Actually I do. I've been asked to travel to Balmorra and help with an investigation in one of the weapons factories. It seems some weapons went missing that were meant to be sent out next week. We need to locate the missing weapons and make sure they haven't fallen into the wrong hands. Does this seem like something you would like to accompany with?"

"Well that's the plan but things often have a way of going off plan. Theoretically this should be a small investigation but I'm sure we can handle things if they get out of hand. You have some lightsber training right?"

She knew he was probably nervous but going on missions was one of the best ways to learn.

"Get anything you need together and meet me in the hangar in 10 minutes."

"Oh, uh....usually I pack pretty light. With my summoning powers, I don't usually need to...ya know, bring stuff with me."

"Alright then. You are starting to sound like a Jedi Knight already."

A few minutes latter they were boarded on a shuttle and headed towards their destination. There were three troopers with them. One was flying the ship and the other two were cleaning their guns. Kat was seated in the back of the ship with her newest padawan friend.

"In the old days, before Order 66, the Jedi took a vow of poverty so they traveled very lightly too. Now some of them even have homes. Things have changed a lot but the Jedi still bring hope to the galaxy."

Katarine chuckled at the blunt question but could not really blame him for asking it. "A century give or take. I was born before the Clone Wars, but was frozen. I've come to understand that isn't entirely unique right now. I have even met some Jedi who are from that era. I think one of them was a friend of yours? Or maybe family?" She was speaking of course of the other Cathar she had cooked with that one time.

"...grand-aunt." Nir admitted, sounding a little apprehensive to admit it. "Well, Grand, times a couple. Her sister is my ancestor. Nal Si. Jedi Master Nal Si." Nir pouted, sinking into his chair. "My family has a ton of jedi in their history, and...it's a lot to live up to. But being a Cathar means I need to. It's...expected of us. We have the Gift. The Force. Jonyna is unique though. She's...she was the jedi when no one could be a jedi. She carried that honor during a time when doing so could get you killed. And now she's back, inspiring us again. It's...intimidating at times."
