Image Source: A screencap from the excellent short film ‘Leviathan.’
Affiliation: Clan Rekali, select customers, the Kathol Outback
Manufacturer: Clan Rekali
Model: Ishmael-class Whaling Vessel
Modularity: Can be reconfigured to specialize in specific prey. Sometimes modified to mount turbolasers and other standard weapons instead of whaling gear, as detailed below.

Classification: Whaling Vessel

Length: 600m
Width: 360m
Height: 160m

Armament:

  • Versus large spaceborne creatures, such as exogorths: 20

  • Against virtually anything else: 4

  • When modified with standard weapons instead of whaling gear: 7
Defenses:

  • Against physical impact, projectiles, etc.: 14

  • Against energy weapons: 5
Hangar:

  • 2 squadrons of small whaling vessels

  • Assorted shuttlecraft and light transports

Special Features:

  • Capital-scale power harpoon launchers

  • Capital-scale Conner net launchers

  • Capital-scale electro-net guns

  • Capital-scale stun net launchers

  • Capital-scale stun lasers

  • Heavy tractor beams

  • Very slow hyperdrive mated with very precise navicomputer

  • Space-dwelling creature processing facilities

  • Heavy particle shields

  • Light energy shields

  • High-capacity life-form scanners

Maneuverability Rating: 11
Speed Rating: 11
Hyperdrive Class: 6. The vessel can also link with modular hyperdrives, after the model of the Clan Rekali Ganker Limpets, to reach Class 3 for transport across galactic distances. This is not a cheap or easy process. The Ishmael-class tends to work in only a handful of localized regions in its operational lifetime, at most.

Strengths:

  • Currently unsurpassed at hunting massive space-dwelling creatures.

  • Fairly strong particle shields and hull.

  • Capable of reliable microjumps (usually in the light-hour range).

  • Powerful life-form scanners.
Weaknesses:

  • In most combat situations, useless.

  • Outfitted with a stunningly slow (but very precise) hyperdrive, unless being transported between regions of the galaxy.

  • Very light energy shields.

Description: The Ishmael-class whaler is designed to hunt and process large space-dwelling creatures, including but not limited to:
The Ishmael-class boasts a variety of weaponry and equipment designed to detect, isolate, subdue, slaughter, and process these creatures. To some extent, this equipment can be swapped out to specialize in specific kinds of prey. The Ishmael-class is also quite capable of hunting large creatures that dwell in gas giants.

The Ishmael-class is a common sight in the Hard Roil, the Denari Nebula, and the Indrexu Spiral. It is sometimes seen in the Kathol Outback and the Chiloon Rift.

Due to the ship’s modularity, availability, capacity, and situational strengths, the Ishmael-class is sometimes modified by Underground forces in the Kathol Outback. However, no matter how heavily modified, it makes a poor warship or combat carrier, and only a decent mobile shadowport or outlaw tech chopshop.
