OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
 • Intent: To create a carrier for Archangel to act as their main combat capital ship. The idea is for a cruiser which has the armaments and defences to engage at range, but has the weakness of being slow and cumbersome.

SPECIAL FEATURES

 • Bridge is concealed inside the ship.
 • The two heaviest guns have a 360 degree fire arc.
 • Hanger is mounted on the bottom of the ship. This can carry 4 squadrons in any mix of attack craft.
 • Crewed entirely by droids, so lacks such necessaries for organics such as crew quarters, mess areas etc.
 • De-Ioniser units scattered through the ship.
Strengths:
 • Hanger. With 4 squadrons of attack craft, the Ironside is a strong carrier whilst still having good weapons and defences.
 • Range. Many of the Ironside’s weapons are long-ranged, allowing it to bombard with its heavy cannons out of range of retaliation. Closer in its array of heavy weapons, energy torpedoes and fast mount guns allow it to engage a variety of targets.
 • Defence. Though a carrier, the Ironside has average defences for its size and can take punches as well as throw them. It also features internal defences like droids, ray shields and airlock traps to make life difficult for boarders.
 • Droids. As the crew are droids and there are no organics on board, certain things have been removed to make away for more effective uses of space. This includes crew quarters, food and drink supplies, recreation areas etc. As a result of this too the bridge of the ship is hidden inside the craft giving no easy target to attack.
Weaknesses:
 • Undergunned. Though it features a good array of long range weapons, this is the Ironside’s main weaponry. Against escorts it has only the fast mount turbolasers to hit faster targets.
 • Combat. The Ironside is primarily designed for carrier operations and bombardment. If forced into a close ranged battle its merely average defences would make it more vulnerable especially to bigger ships.
 • Speed. The Ironside is slower and more sluggish than a regular cruiser. This means it’ll be harder for it to escape from the battle if it’s pursued.
 • Droids. Droids are naturally vulnerable to ion weapons. Heavy ion weapons can discharge once the shield is down to damage not just the vulnerable systems but the droids crewing it too. This can overwhelm the de-ionisers and cause havoc.

Description:
Archangel’s growth in power made them desire a cruiser sized ship which could participate in fleet engagements where needed. The priority was for a carrier, but heavy weapons were also added to it to allow long ranged bombardment. Since a carrier’s job was to stay back, this allowed the ship to perform an additional role as well.

The ship features a concealed bridge and lacks features an organic crew requires such as quarters. It does however feature a well-stocked repair bay and small prison for organic captives.
The Ironside carries 4 squadrons into battle. Depending on the configuration of the rest of the fleet this is usually of one sort.

The Ironside is somewhat weak against enemies who can get close to it as well smaller ships which it finds hard to target. It does have a powerful array of defence guns to guard against enemy attack craft though.

Squadrons. Although 4 squadrons is nice, it is a compromise on what a ship this side could carry. It cannot expect to be the only carrier involved in a battle.
I don't believe this a true weakness, given the fact that the carrier has a 'High' hangar rating while maintaining a 'Moderate' armament rating (It's the equivalent of saying that a Victory-class weakness is the fact that it took a rating out of engines to get higher weaponry), please remove it.
