Investment Hunt [Past Thread]

Toren Avalos

The private transport Toren had rented arrived above the planet Kaeshana. Here he hoped to find the final, and largest, investor for his company. Sure he had a few private backers from Anaxes, hell even his mother had seen some potential profit in his business plan and put in some money, but he needed a big fish for things to really start rolling. That and a government willing to allow him to build in their orbit.

He planned on getting both here.

Well before he had left his home planet to venture so far from the core, Toren had contacted both the local powerhouse Firemane and the Kaeshana government proper. Little had come from the conversations. What he had managed to get was a meeting with individuals who represented the interested parties (or at least the parties he was interested in). Now he just needed to use his charm and well thought out-in his mind anyway-business proposals to garner their support.

After he touched down in Santaissa he made his way to the address he had been provided. Stepping through, he approached the tall reception desk where a pretty young eldorai girl sat. Donning his best smile, he leaned his elbow on the desk. "Toren Avalos, I have a meeting here today."

Eldorai tended to be tremendously sexist and this particular secretary happened to be a conservative. Thus she was of the belief that males, especially human monkeighs, ought to be kept in their place and under the heel of the Eldorai mistresses since their sole utility was as breeding stock. Fortunately for Toren the elves had been persuaded at long length not to enforce their customs on foreigners.

Yes, the space elves had...warped priorities.

In any event she checked the list with all the interest one could expect from a receptionist. It had been a long day after all. As it happened Mr Avalos did have a appointment. "Lady Kerrigan, your one o'clock apppointment has arrived. A Mr. Toren Avalos," she spoke into the comm device.

"Thank you, Dinas. Send him to meeting room nine and make sure refreshments. Lady [member="Tegaea Alcori"] and I will be there momentarily," Countess Kerrigan replied as she noticed that she had a meeting. This having slipped her mind was nothing against Toren, she simply had a tendency to not read the agenda. Ah, well, it meant she would have to postpone her...training session with Tempest!

Tegaea was waiting when Siobhan arrived. She nodded to her wife using her ‘business face’. It was important to maintain professional standards when working with business clients.

When Toren arrived she extended a hand in greeting. “Welcome to Kaeshana, Mr Avalos. I was most intrigued by your message. Please, take a seat. I am Tegaea Alcori, and this is my wife Siobhan Kerrigan.”

Before choosing this planet he had researched it, so naturally he knew of the cultural stigma against males. Of course, he also knew of the recent legal changes. So while he had no idea that this receptionist was a conservative, he had arrived counting on the new culture developing and its economic possibilities.

Nodding and giving a thanks he followed her directions to the meeting room. A quick scan pinpointed the head of the table. Pulling out the chair directly across from it, he sat down to wait. Toren had read the files for [member="Siobhan Kerrigan"] and [member="Tegaea Alcori"], but he was looking forward to meeting them in person. Files could only tell a person so much.

He just had to remember not to do anything that would earn him a trip through the wall.

Tegaea smiled and sat also. The man across from them had the look of so many businessmen across the galaxy. Many came to Firemane with great ideas for new inventions or companies, looking for funding or looking for some sort of endorsement. Some were liars and scammers, others were simply not deserving of the funding. A few, a rare few, were worth investment in.
Tegaea was a good judge of character and her wife was rather famous as a Force user. It was a very brave shyster who tried to scam them.

“So, Mr Avalos, please tell me your proposal. Take your time and explain exactly what it is you wish and what you offer.”
She settled back to listen carefully.

Considering all the times she was so easily fooled and walked into blindly obvious traps, this one would consider Siobhan's judgement appalling. However, she had a reputation for random and ridiculously brutal violence, which presumably served as a deterrent when it came to scams. Besides, those who fooled her tended to be pretty ladies. Or Shadow, but that thread had not yet happened yet. Fortunately most of her position in Firemane when it came to management was window-dressing.

In any event she settled down along the long table made out of the finest wood from Kashyyyk. A pretty Eldorai secretary came in and brought refreshments. Siobhan resisted the urge to give the girl's butt a good grope as she departed since they were supposed to appear professional and all that.

A polite, business smile crossed Toren's face as he stood. "I thank the both of you for your time. If you would please load the data on this data crystal I shall start my presentation."

Pulling the data crystal from his suit pocket, he slid it across the table. It was not out of laziness or disrespect, rather it was respect for their company's security. The data crystal could have all manners of malware loaded on it to steal their company's secrets. Of course stating so was generally a business faux pas. Once they had performed which ever security checks they deemed appropriate, Toren began his presentation.

The room's holoprojector came alive, and in it spun the letters "A.S.I." spinning slowly in the center. A curved line cut through the letters out one side before bending back, with a small generic looking space ship resting in the space above the S and I. "I present: Avalos Space Industries."

Using the holoprojector's control device, he switched the image to a map of the Galaxy in its current state. "We live in chaotic times, unfortunately filled with war. However, this also leaves us with an opportunity. Thousands of planets are still recovering from the four hundred years of darkness, while empires rise and fall consuming any planet they can in the process. Add to this the sheet instability the lack of real galaxy wide authority and we find pirates on the rise in these free areas.

"Which leaves us with potential customers numbering in the thousands. These local governments typically prefer their own sovereignty, and also need a way to protect themselves from pirates. While we cannot stop the real heavy hitters like the Republic or Fringe from conquering whoever they want we can at least stop any local pocket dictators from trying to create their own spot on the map.

"To do this, we offer them the means to protect themselves. I have outlined three tiers of customers this project would approach. The lowest tier we would sell a single squadron of fighters. Enough to protect themselves from local pirates, and act as a deterrent for any ambitious neighbors. The second tier are systems that can afford a corvette in addition to fighters. For the smaller systems, this is a significant leap in fire power. The final tier of customers we offer a frigate in addition to corvettes and fighters. No pirate. short of an entire pirate fleet, would dare approach these systems.

"But this is not all of the money, we also provide simulators and experts so that the clients can train a proper military force to use the products they purchase. And once we have a significant client base, we can begin marketing to the major players. Prove to them that our ships are worth every credit, and that they would be remiss to buy ships from anywhere else. PMCs, as you know, routinely need top of the line hardware and not all of them have the luxury of being able to build their equipment themselves. Using profits from these sales, we increase our production abilities until we can start making the kinds of ships that turn even major governments' heads.

"This is, of course, just the military side of things. We would offer commercial ships as well. I already have plans for a line of ships marketed toward anti-piracy. Specifically ships that even in the event of a pirate attacking, would prevent them from obtaining the merchandise either through deception or by making the merchandise unattainable."

He paused for a moment to change the image to what was clearly a shipyard. It had a central hub, with two large construction bays on opposite sides. A pair of smaller bays were attached to the hub in the space between the large bays. "However the first step is a shipyard. This is a model based off of research of many existing shipyards. It can be built quickly, and cheaply for its size. More importantly, it can be expanded almost infinitely. Each bay is self contained, connected to the next only by corridors." In the holoprojection, the number of bays doubled then tripled.

"We can build the starfighter bays quickly, and by the time the first fighter leaves the yard the frigate/corvette bays will be well on their way to completion. As we make sales and finish construction bays, we can start construction on the next bay. Using this model, we will never have to slow down construction to expand, we can freely grow to meet our business needs."

Returning to the A.S.I. logo, Toren made a small gesture toward Tegaea. "As you know, there are two ways to run a business. There is slow and gradual build. Less risk, but growth is stunted and rarely grows into a true Galaxy wide company. For most new businesses, I would recommend this model. However when it comes to spaceships, slow means death. A.S.I. must be aggressive, expanding as fast as possible and coming out with better ships continuously. If we start slow, and supply a few systems with our ships the big companies like Kuat will see what we're doing and they already have the building resources to out pace us. We have to seize the market before they ever get a whiff of the action.

"That is why I am here. I already have $300 million in investments, as well as a list of systems ready to buy our product as soon as it becomes available. What I need from you and the Kaeshana government is the rest of the start up capital, and the rights to build a shipyard in this system. In return, I can guarantee a 200% return on investment as well as significant discounts for the Kaeshana government on ships produced by Avalos Space Industries."

His presentation over, he looked between the two women. "Now I am sure the two of you have questions."

Tegaea listened carefully to the presentation. It was certainly a well rehearsed and detailed presentation. However, as Toren finished Tegaea did indeed have questions. Though she was in partnership with her wife, it was Tegaea who ultimately made these decisions, though after receiving input from Siobhan naturally. And that was her plan now.

"Thank you, Mr Avalos. Please allow my wife and I a moment to discuss this."

She rose and took Siobhan out onto the balcony where their conversation would not be overheard.

Tegaea looked at Siobhan. "Okay, I have my thoughts, I'd like to hear yours."
They discussed the matter in the warm sunshine, and finally Tegaea nodded. "OK, so we're agreed?" she asked Siobhan.

For a change there was not a storm raging and so they could stand on the balcony undisturbed. Sometimes Kaeshana weather was actually good, contrary to its reputation. Much to Siobhan's disappointment there was no time for them to take a...more extensive break. Or attend a class in the Literacy Module. Her wife was very adamant about that.

Regardless Siobhan emphatically made her points with her characteristic bluntness and lack of tact, agreeing with her wife's statements as mirroring. Obviously Tegaea made the final decisions and generally Siobhan was fine with that, though she had a tendency to make her opinions heard when something annoyed her.

"Yes, let's go back. Your hair looks lovely you know and that suits really fits you." She was not at all trying to bribe her way into a break.

Tegaea saw the compliment for what it was and smiled. "Thank you, dear, but we've got a lot of work to do before we finish," she said pointedly.

Returning to the room she sat down in her chair. "Thank you for your patience, Mr Avalos. My wife and I have decided our view on this matter."

She took a breath, then another before beginning.
"Your intent is noble, Mr Avalos. When Cira and I formed Omega Pyre and later the Protectorate we saw the chaos caused by pirates and raiders across the galaxy. Kaeshana was one such victim, faced by predators it could not fully resist. We have helped them, and many other worlds, and I see that is what you're trying to do."

"However, you must understand the situation here. The Eldorai are in the planning stages of building their own shipyards and space stations. We do not own this planet; they do. The Eldorai would not agree to an outsider owning the shipyards above their planet, or that the ships being designed there were not of their origin."

"I am also unsure about your business model. A single corvette or frigate is not likely to protect an entire planet. Pirates that we've fought here and elsewhere have used multiple ships, sometimes even refurbished cruisers or larger. Whilst I like your plans in theory, it's something we'd have to cooperate with the Eldorai with...under our lead. We are the only outsiders here with the necessary influence to make it work."

"So in summary, I'm afraid we shall have to turn down your offer. However, if you have ship designs we will purchase them and construct them ourselves. We can also work together I'm sure to determine planets in need and creating a small fleet to patrol and protect them. As it is though, we cannot invest in your company on this planet."

It wouldn't be what he wanted to hear, but she was still interested in working with him - he had vision and ideas after all.

"Of course Lady Alcori, please take as much time as you need," Toren said as Tegaea stood. Once they left he took his seat and took a sip of water that had been provided for him. Externally he did not look worried in the least. Confidence was a trait a leader always has to display. This was a lesson his mother had taught him at a young age, and one he took dearly to heart.

That was not to say he had no trepidation. They could attempt to negotiate for unreasonable terms, or turn him down outright. The best he could hope for was that if they were not yet sold that they would return and begin picking apart his presentation. Then he could show the solidity of his business plan. Ultimately though, he was up to them.
